Anyone like Fantasy Films?

Recommended Posts

These Two Movies are exciting me:

The Golden Compass

Daniel Craig(yes!), Nicole Kidman (perfect casting), Sam Elliot, and the voice of Ian McShane (friendly proprietor of the Gem Saloon)

This is the first book in my favorite fantasy series, and it looks visually stunning and has a good cast. I'm excited, though I think the references to Lord of the Rings are silly and unneccesary.

AND

Stardust

Robert Deniro, Ricky Gervais ( :worship ), Michelle Pfeiffer, Peter O'Toole, and Ian McKellen Narrating

Neil Gaiman wrote it, so I'm expecting good things

Thulsa Doom: I wish to speak to you now. Where is the Eye of the Serpent? Rexor says that you gave to a girl, probably for a mere night's pleasure, hmm? What a loss. People have no grasp of what they do. You broke into my house, stole my property, murdered my servants, and my PETS! And that is what grieves me the most! You killed my snake. Thorgrim is beside himself with grief! He raised that snake from the time it was born.

Conan: You killed my mother! You killed my father, you killed my people! You took my father's sword... ah

[Rexor twists his arm]

Thulsa Doom: Ah. It must have been when I was younger. There was a time, boy, when I searched for steel, when steel meant more to me than gold or jewels.

Conan: The riddle... of steel.

Thulsa Doom: Yes! You know what it is, don't you boy? Shall I tell you? It's the least I can do. Steel isn't strong, boy, flesh is stronger! Look around you. There, on the rocks; a beautiful girl. Come to me, my child...

Thulsa Doom: [coaxes the girl to jump to her death]

Thulsa Doom: That is strength, boy! That is power! What is steel compared to the hand that wields it? Look at the strength in your body, the desire in your heart, I gave you this! Such a waste. Contemplate this on the tree of woe. Crucify him!

I used to like these sorts of films when they weren't ruined by computer animation and kung-fu camera work. Both the stories look good, but the way they are made puts me off something rotten. I also think that when you cast a child in a lead role (as with The Golden Compass) you need to be a lot looser with the way it's filmed, because otherwise they don't get a chance to appear as anything other than wooden. Oh, and I think Ricky Gervais needs to start learning that to be an actor you actually have to act at least a little.

Have a modicum of talent you mean.

Stephen Merchant is the funny one, by a long way...

Gervais' greasy smile, his obvious need for approval from the entertainment industry, his patent unfunniness....oh Lord how I hate him.

Looking forward to The Golden Compass. From the preview it looks like they've done a nice job. When I read the book about 10 years ago, I imagined Mrs. Coulter to look like Nicole Kidman. So for me, that was a brilliant bit of casting.

There's also a movie being made of The Dark is Rising. Susan Cooper's series was my favorite growing up. It looks like they're rushing this one as they're still filming now and it comes out in September (I think). Hopefully they won't mess it up. The bit of casting for that one I like is Ian McShayne as Merriman Lyon.

The original trade paperback edition of Stardust, the one that was copiously illustrated by Charles Vess, is a real treat and a half. In the years since its publication, I've seen a number of crappy looking paperback printings that I guess were meant to be a sort of visually abridged, affordable version of the book. My advice to anybody who's thinking of reading it is to avoid those if you can, because they basically represent a bastardized vision of what Gaiman and Vess intended Stardust to be.

The movie looks pretty faithful, and I think it should be a lot of fun with a cast that includes DeNiro, Pfeiffer and Claire Danes.

Oh, and you know what fantasy movie scared the hell out of me as a kid? Ridley Scott's Legend. Tim Curry with those horns, man. Wow. Scary, scary, scary.
