ms. yvon
Los Angeles-based promoter Live Nation, which sold the 65-acre Starwood and owns the four other amphitheaters on the market, said the divestiture is part of the company
quarter23cd
Yeah, the shed in Columbus--which is practically in the backyard of my new house--is pretty obviously toast at the end of this year. The land it sits on is prime real estate, and the neighboring businesses have been complaining about the traffic/noise for years. (which is funny b/c the amphitheater pre-dates almost everything that has built up in that area in the last decade, so its not like they didn't know they were building businesses next door to a concert venue) I've got mixed feelings about it. Say what you will about sheds being big and impersonal and having crappy sound--all of those things are true to an extent, but a lot of my earliest concert experiences took place on a lawn (Merriweather Post, in my case) and I was kind of looking forward to taking my kids to a few shows like that when they get a little older. Sheds make for good "traning wheels" shows for kids, and I still kind of like the outdoors concert experience. Given a choice, I'll take a shed over an arena in a heartbeat. There are only like 6 shows scheduled there all summer. Woulda been nice to go out in style--maybe a Wilco show or, I dunno, like Neil Young or something along those lines. Looks like the final music act is going to be Rush. (which is actually the coolest show on this summer's lineup)
darkstar
Yeah...they announced it was closing a few months ago here in Nashvegas nobody really seemed to care. That whole part of Murfreesboro road is all new houses and what not now so I'm not surprised they sold it. Big $$$ for real estate developers. It's kind of sad that there really isn't a decent place for concerts (except for the Ryman) here in Nashville. Music City my ass. Nobody really seems to come here (or at least nobody I like) anymore (except Wilco of course). Next week they have the CMA festival (used to be FanFair) and though I don't care for country music at all they have even managed to screw that up now. All the big shows take place in the Collesium now instead of the fairgrounds, no more artists in booths meeting their fans, etc. We still do get 50,000 tourists in their big ass RV's trying to drive through downtown though. Some things never change.
embiggen
no more artists in booths meeting their fans what? that was the whole deal behind Fan Fair!!! good thing we decided to move up here so my husband could make decent $$$ working in music production.

As for venues, we have 2 big shiny new-ish sporting arenas (which are fine for basketball/hockey games, but lousy places for music), a couple old theaters downtown that only rarely have concerts, and maybe 2 decent mid-sized clubs. What is probably the best "indie" venue in town is closing in July. No wonder this town gets passed by on so many tours.
darkstar
what? that was the whole deal behind Fan Fair!!! good thing we decided to move up here so my husband could make decent $$$ working in music production. Yep...they used to have all those booths set up at the fairgrounds, not anymore. I think a lot of emerging and not so well known artists still do it but not like they used to. Like I said I'm not a fan of country or anything but it seemed to me that was a cool thing for artists to do. But the powers that be have changed it all....Nashville is gettting kinda weird lately. A lot of violent crime (of course the crime goes up as it gets warmer out), there's a real problem growing with illegal aliens in the Nolensville Road area, a lot of dope around (hard core stuff, leading to a lot of homicides) and in general a lot of mayhem. Just this morning they had the ramp off Briley Parkway to Ashland City highway shut down because someone dumped a body there early this morning, or killed them there they are not sure. They said they found evidence (shell casings, etc). Some poor dude had to pull off the ramp to change a flat and discovered the body this morning, nice way to start the day huh? Same for Cbus. Surprising...I've been there (just travelling through) and it seems like a pretty big place, and what with OSU you would think they would have a lot of bands wanting to play there. Booking here tends to be streaky...they'll get a few good shows and then go months of nothing but Pink Floyd tribute bands. The Newport still gets a fair amount of decent bands, being located across the street from OSU. I think they are indirectly owned by ClearChannel anymore, which is kind of disheartening. And there is another newer venue downtown roughly the same size and also owned by the same company. Aside from the arenas, those are really the only places left to see a show. I used to live very near there (Briley Pkwy exit). crime was getting bad around Nolensville Road area 6 years ago. I remember being followed by some guy at a Pep Boys and he even followed me out to the parking lot and started following me in the car. I had to pull of to another store to lose the guy. this sucks! Nobody really seems to come here (or at least nobody I like) anymore (except Wilco of course). I would say that Nashville has several good venues in addition to the Ryman: Exit/In, Mercy Lounge, the Belcourt, and City Hall. 12th & Porter used to be great but hasn't done much that I've noticed since it reopened. I keep meaning to go to the Basement b/c I've heard great things about it. As far as no good shows, just this week there is: Tue: The Broken West (opening for the Comas)- Exit/InWed: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - City HallFri: The Black Keys - City HallFri: Heartless Bastards - Exit/In. DawgSong
"Given a choice, I'll take a shed over an arena in a heartbeat" I agree, but being only 2.5 hours south of Nashville I saw many shows at Starwood but didn't really like the place. Mostly having to do with the location, and in my early days over-the-top cops especially in the lots. However IMO, this will be Good Times for me. Although I don't see many bands who play sheds and arenas anymoreit appears these bands will have to play downtown at the Gaylord. Now post-shows I can head up the hill to theBluegrass Inn and hopefully catch Hillbilly Casino or the many other great bands who play there. Nashville may in fact now be skipped over by bands as I would guess the "rent" of the Gaylord is a good bit more costlythan Starwood. Time will tell.
