I had only recently seen Will Oldham live for the first time last October and was impressed how he rocked everything that wasn't that rockin' to begin with. When I heard he was playing I See A Darkness in its entirety I knew I could not miss it. 8 hours of driving (well riding with good company) for a performance of one 40 something minute record, but it would have been worth it at 16 hours. Three guitars, including Matt Sweeney (and Pajo on one song), keys and violin on every song, and "harmonies" from his brother/bass player Paul. He was wearing eyeliner which was way more crazy street person than emo kid looking, especially as it ran down his face with his sweat. I really cannot put into words how intense the build to the chorus of "I See A Darkness" was. You could feel it in everyone who knew the album, whatever it was. The "setlist" was the booklet from the CD, I guess he needed a little reminder of what to play since he probably doesn't sit around listening to the album. I'm not big on listening to recordings of shows, but I think the recording of this one could trump the actual album for me (even with keyboard noise issues on Nomadic Revery.) I just hope it gets out there. (Fred Armisen was videotaping it, I'm going to assume there is killer audio out there as well.)

I'm a Lost Blues man myself. :cheers

He even wore the mascara when I saw him play solo in a little coffee shop last year. I wish I'd known about this one though. :(

Glad you got to see this, Sam. (Fred Armisen was in Kentucky?!!?)

I love these kinds of reports -- so much passion for the music. Samorama, thanks for sharing this review with us, as well as your Edward Burch post - spoken from the heart. Very cool that you could attend this one so far away. Just out of curiosity, in what venue was this held?

Crap. I've gotten on a few email lists to be apprised of upcoming shows in the area, but it just sends me stuff about Nickelback, Wrestlemania and the like! :lol

Edit: Not that there's anything wrong with that...

The Bon is one that is definitely on my must-see list.

I love so much of his stuff, be it as one of the Palace incarnations or under the BPB name. Great stuff. There is a lack of bards today, but he's he best of the lot.

I've found a recording of a show he played in Scotland with the Scottish band Harem Scarem back in April '06...it's so friggin good I don't want to hear any other music for a while...I can't get enough of it. He does a killer My Home Is The Sea ---> Master And Everyone...if you are a fan ya gotta hear it! He's way up there on my list of who I must see live...thanks for sharing that with us.

You can probably find the show if you go to The Hype Machine website and search for Bonnie Prince Billy...trust me...it's worth the effort...

Karen in Maine

also on that list vying for first place: Nick Cave, Gillian Welch
