I tried it for a while when I was a yoot. Never got very good b/c I didn't live close enough to the shore to practice with any consistency. Always wished I was better at it.

Nowadays I'm landlocked in the midwest, and am trying to decide how badly I will be laughed at as a tremendous dork if I try to use my skimboard at the nearby lake.

I just moved back to Southern California after 12 years away and am just getting back into it. It's more of a workout than it seemed when I was a kid. I've been running in the mornings and going to the gym so I can build up some endurance to surf. I live 5 minutes from a great spot but it's a little rough for me right now. Newport is a perfect spot because there is not much paddling required. Anyway, I love to surf and look to be doing a lot more in the future.

I just bought my 6 year old son a boogie board and I'm in the process of teaching him to ride waves on it. Yesterday was our first experience and he had a blast. He went today with his uncle while I sit here and work away.

I attempted to surf in the James River once. It did not go well.

When he was a teenager, my dad was surfing with a guy who had his nose severed (nearly completely) from his face by his board's fin after he wiped out. Kinda killed it for me, not that we ever lived near the ocean...
