So envious! Congratulations and enjoy! Please tell all about the experience asap!

I'll be at the show! :dancing

I never post here, but I had to share. I just won sound check passes via Record and Tape Traders to catch the sound check at Merriweather on Thursday. Maybe I'll get to meet them. Oh joy :dancing

UPDATE! My dad just won backstage passes on WRNR. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh man :D

Is his name Dennis Richter or something like that. I heard him. I called in after hearing the montage one time and got "Always in Love" wrong. I said NEGSIOWA. When I heard it a second time I called and the phone rang for like 2 minutes. Damn. Good for your dad! We'll see him on the stage at the show!

Hey Merriweather locals......

We're headed down early tomorrow from the Philly area (should arrive by 4pm or so) and looking to find a nearby place to eat, drink and be merry pre-show. I'm told that tailgating is forbidden in the official parking lot (is that really true) and also that there's a mall across the street with places to eat.

But would rather find something less sterile if possible.

Thanks in advance for your help.

FYI - Columbia, MD is the world's most sterile town in America. You'll see. It was designed that way. I call it the "Biggest Industrial Park in the World"

As far as cool places to go, I would say that the mall is your best bet unless you want to drive from the bar to Merriweather. If you don't mind driving, I would have to say the best bar in Columbia is Nottingham's. It's not too far.

According to the people who live here, I just work here, you can:

Go to the Champs bar in the mall. Very close and is walking distance.

Clydes, short drive

Sonoma (seafood) 2 minute ride.

p.s. Columbia is in Howard county. No smoking in bars anymore.

For all you who brave the MD suburban commute: how long do you think it will take me to drive from Foggy Bottom to Merriweather? I don't want to be late because I sat on the beltway for a lifetime!

Thanks.

:thumbup

Leave by 4pm and you should probably be ok. I would assume that it would take an hour or so. But I'm crazy conservative when it comes to getting to concerts.

Cool. thanks for the feedback.

I was only there once in 1985 (at a Dead show) and really don't remember much. :stunned

I knew about Champs option but wanted to try and avoid that. Maybe I'll look into Nottingham's.

Are you sure? I would think that it would take at least an hour without rush hour traffic...

If you're going around the east side, taking Wilson Bridge out of the equation, an hour should be good. If you're going around the west (my horrible knowledge of DC neighborhoods is showing), the 270 split will fuck you up good if you leave at 4. Give yourself more time.

Hey, I don't live in the DC area anymore, so everything I just said could be completely wrong. :lol

I've gotten killed by traffic heading to shows at Merriweather in the past, though, so the West side of the Beltway requires more time, at least in my experience.

I think I will try to avoid the beltway as much as possible. I'll prolly take New Hampshire Ave or 295 (which can be another whole clusterfuck).

Wish me luck.

Last time I went to Merriweather from VA I took 295 BW Parkway. Exit onto Hwy. 32 drive a few miles then exit onto 29 North to the venue. Not sure how to navigate this out of the District, but it cut out the beltway and was a pretty quick drive (at least on that day it was). :thumbup

I don't live in DC anymore, either, but back in the day I used to suddenly get "sick" and have to leave work sometime in the early afternoon and head up the West side of the beltway in order to get there in plenty of time. Not sure this is a viable option for everybody, tho. :unsure

I'm going to the Merriweather concert. Originally, I was going to leave around noon and check out a home audio/video store based there called Gramophone (anybody know of it? Is it worth checking out?) and make a day trip of things. But then my wife has to go into work at 3, and so we can't leave until 4pm. We're coming from Bristow, VA, and we'll be coming at the height of rush hour traffic. Hopefully we won't miss any of Low's performance. Hopefully...

I'm seated in the center in row U near the sound board center thingee...

This is my wife's 7th anniversary present. http://forums.viachicago.org/style_emotico...ancing_geek.gif

I'm driving from Fairfax, where I work. I'm getting out around 2 p.m., plan to be on the road by 2:30 p.m.

Anyway, for Mapquest purposes, is anyone else using 10475 Little Patuxent Parkway Columbia, MD as the destination address? I did a Google search and this came up.

Also, just for anyone else in the area, I found these directions on Merriweather's website:

From the Washington DC area and points South: Take DC Beltway 495 to I-95 North towards Baltimore. Proceed 16.2 miles. Merge onto MD-32 West exit 38B toward Columbia. Exit onto Rt. 29 North, exit 16A. Take the Broken Land Parkway North exit towards Merriweather. Do not take the Broken Land Parkway exit you see earlier while on MD-32 West. Merge onto Broken Land Parkway. Turn right at first stoplight into Main Parking Area.

Alternate route from the Washington DC area: Take DC Beltway 495 to I-95 North towards Baltimore. Pass exit 38B, go two more exits. Exit onto Route 100 West. Proceed to Route 29 South. Turn right onto South Entrance Road. Turn left onto Symphony Woods Road. Follow to Main Parking Area.

anyway,
