lizish
Saw the Detroit show on Sunday. Missed the first song in the opening (!!!!^&S^@^$$@%) slot because of an hour long border wait. What I saw was incredible. 10 songs. 9 from Convicts. My love for this band is confirmed. Trouble was, generously, maybe 25 people were there. Talking to Andy Kent (the Bassist) and he was a tad disappointed in the turn out, but I'm hoping my 'You're my biggest fan' geek out did some to lift his spirits. Smoking Popes in the headlining slot were ok. I'm not a huge fan of their Weezer/Cheap Trick thing, and YAI should not have been opening. I wonder what it must be like to have your warm-up band constantly blow you out of the room? Gave them a copy of the Deadly Snakes Second CD (with the one with Greg Cartwright) cause I know they are Reigning Sound Fans. Hope then actually listen to it.
lizish
One other thing - how do you guys still stand smoking in rock clubs? I had totally forgotten about those dufus smoking indie kids. I kept moving around trying to avoid some stupid exhaling 16-year old. Some where even wearing sunglasses inside. Tres cool. I bet small rock club attendance would actually increase if they went smoke free.
cryptique
I've seen some disappointing turnouts at the Magic Stick over the last few years. I like the venue, but let's face it, it's Detroit, and most of the crowd that would come see a lesser-known rock band would be commuting from the 'burbs. I've seen good turnouts for bands like Spoon and Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, and horrendous turnouts for the Posies and a couple of others. The Michigan legislature is currently tossing around a smoking ban, and of course the restaurant and bar groups are lobbying furiously against it. I hope to cod it passes, and includes bars and nightclubs -- I'll go out a lot more if it does.
Wendy
You were probably there with a bunch of Fort Wayne dudes - we got the love for You Am I big time here. They had a similar review to yours, YAI +++++, Smoking Popes - okay. I would have been there too, but I was on vacation and one show (below) was all I could manage. And yeah, the Detroit concert crowd is weird. I will say this, only 50-75 people showed up for Jason Isbell last Wednesday night there, but he ripped the place up in a much MUCH grander performance than his opening slot for Son Volt a few months back (although in his defense, that was just 3 days after his departure from DBTs, so he was undoubtedly a bit stunned at that time). Yeah, the smoke still exists in Detroit. A month or so ago, after Ryan Adams at The Gem in downtown Detroit, we hit the Majestic Cafe for late-night coffee/dinner, and our buddy's car was broken into while we dined, so the neighborhood is risky and I recommend NOT parking on a side street. Stay in the pay lot across the street (3 bucks, worth it) or at least along Woodward. Sad. There's some sort of scam going on there as well, same people begging each night. MrRain422
I can't picture the Magic Stick (or any bar in Detroit, for that matter) not filled with smoke. I don't smoke cigarettes, but I think a smoke-free Lager House would make me cry.
lizish
Parking was a big worry. We were thinking about parking at the Hospital but couldn't get into the garage. Instead, we ended up getting the bouncer to recommend some street guys to watch the car and gladly paid them. The whole time, I was thinking that we were being scammed, but it worked out really well. I was probably overly paranoid about going to downtown Hockey Town. Love that club! Seeing all the Detroit Cobras and Dirt Bombs posters on the wall made me feel right at home. What a thrill to walk up the stairs and see Tim Rogers spazzing out with the best band in the world. Smoking ruins all things, including rock shows, jazz, drinking and sex. MrRain422
When I used to frequent the Magic Stick, I could usually find parking on Alexandrine, Willis or John R. I don't know if it's maybe a little harder now though, as it's been about 2 years since I was a regular there. One of my friends did have his car broken into while parked on John R once, but considering the dozens and dozens of shows we went to there, one incident seems almost like bad luck. Not that the neighborhood is great, but it isn't awful either. I never gave money to those guys who offered to watch the car, because usually they didn't even see which car was mine by the time they offered anyway, plus I sort of think that they're the ones breaking into cars, so I felt sort of silly paying someone not to rob me. augurus
I hope that smoking ban passes the legislature. And honestly, the Detroit crowd is rough and mostly unpleasant even if you do get attendence. I wish most of the Detroit crowd would learn some courtesy too.
