remphish1
I recently got into Squeeze and am excited to see them when the come to NJ on 8/6. Anyone see them recently and what did you think? How long did they play, how did they sound?
MattZ
First concert I ever saw was Squeeze at a sold out MSG for the Babylon and On tour. My first favorite band. Have seen them and Tillbrook several times since. Always a blast, and it's gonna be great to have Chris back on stage harmonizing with Glenn. The older I get, the better these guys are. Difford is a criminally underrated lyric writer and Glenn has written some timeless hooks and melodies. I have tix to the Beacon theater show on Friday. Will report back. Can't wait. EDIT: to answer your question -- they will sound great. Glenn tours constantly these days (solo and with his band the Fluffers) and he sounds as great as he ever did. You will be floored by his guitar skills too. The consummate pro. I dont know anything about the backing band, but I am confident it will sound great.
cryptique
Doesn't look like they're playing any dates here in flyover country. I'd love to see 'em, but they'll have to come a lot closer.

If they dont kill each other first, I wouldn't be surprised to see them hit the midwest. I think Glenn does alright for himself these days, but he's not selling out the Beacon in NYC by himself. Disappointing crowd, but that may have been due to a one-night delay following a tour bus breakdown. He played a smashing show and sounded fantastic. It's too bad that Gilson Lavis isn't part of this new Squeeze tour.
MattZ
It's too bad that Gilson Lavis isn't part of this new Squeeze tour. Couldn't agree more. Most seem to lament the absensce of Jools Holland (or even Carrack) on this tour, and while I agree, I think I'll miss Gilson as much if not more.
Sir Stewart
Last week LiveNation was offering $10 tickets to their Boston show. I balked, even though when the show was announced I said I'd go if the tickets weren't so pricey. Oh well.

MattZ
Squeeze returned to a sold out Beacon Theatre in NY last night. Joining Glenn and Chris on bass was John Bentley from the glory days of East Side Story. On drums and keys were two blokes from Glenn's current solo band -- the Fluffers. First, Fountains of Wayne opened and set the stage perfectly. They were gracious and (appropriately) said on several occasions what an honor it was to be opening for Squeeze. Highlights from their set for me were Hackensack, Radiation Vibe and Hey Julie. Everyone stood up and cheered for Stacy's Mom. Go figure. Squeeze hit the stage at 9:15 with Take Me I'm Yours from Cool for Cats and went right into the first surprise of the night -- Slightly Drunk. Great way to start the night. Glenn was his usual self. Drinking beers ("cheers then!") and hamming it up at every opportunity. Chris looked as uncomfortable and shy as ever. But the harmonies were back. Glenn solo is a treat. But its just a different level when the harmonies with Chris are there. The band seemed a bit rusty. Glenn missed a couple of changes at the beginning and the guy on keys flubbed some backing vocals. But the energy was there and there were smiles all around. On stage and in the crowd. The setlist was pretty standard -- everything from 45's and under was sprinkled throughout the night (Pulling Mussels, Up the Junction, Annie Get Your Gun, Another Nail, Slap and Tickle, Tempted, etc.) with some lesser known gems as well (Third Rail, Some Fantastic Place, Walk Away, I Think I'm GoGo, Melody Motel, Walk Away, Electric Trains). Chris got two lead vocals -- Cool for Cats and Slaughtered Gutted and Heartbroken. Encore included Is That Love and Black Coffee in Bed. It was a great night. My first concert was almost 20 years ago -- Squeeze at a sold out MSG (I think Katrina and the Waves opened). I just don't get how this band is so unknown. Seeing them at the Beacon last night was a real treat. Even snapped a decent pic.

bböp
After pulling up a pretty decent seat like two days before the show, I went with a buddy of mine who's a pretty big Squeeze fan from back in the day. Part of the appeal for me was getting to see FoW, but I have to say, it was a pleasant surprise to hear how good Squeeze sounded. The only bad thing was the massive downpour that happened right as the show was letting out... Anyway, here was the Squeeze setlist for the Beacon show: Take Me I

Wendy
It's sorta funny that the theater put tickets on sale for a tour that had not yet been announced. (PS Tom - Adam wants that extra ticket!) Can't wait to see them. I loved your review, Matt. I remember reading it back then and just hoping they would come back again. And now they have! Yay!
