Beltman,

We watched an indie movie over the weekend called 'Chalk'...it was kind of a stab at being a version of The Office except it took place /w teachers and adminstrators in a High School. It was marginally funny...but if you were a HS school teacher, you might get a bigger kick out of it.

We also saw that Chuck and Larry movie where Sandler and the King of Queens pretend to be gay. It was marginally funny...but if you were gay or 16 years old, you might get a bigger kick out of it.

I'm also curious about how your feeling about that upcoming movie version of SK's The Mist...I think it looks kind of fun. Good popcorn watch through your fingers type deal.

Yeah, that's been in my queue for a few weeks now. I'm mostly interested because of the subject matter--and hey, it can't be any worse than Boston Public, right?

Haven't seen it. Looks unbearable. While I think Sandler is an interesting guy, in general I can't stand his movies. I did catch up with Reign Over Me the other night and thought he did a pretty good job. Still, the only Sandler movie I would ever watch a second time is Punch-Drunk Love.

I dunno. I'm intrigued.

Have you heard about this movie called The Signal?

Way better than Boston Public...it's fun, you'll at least get a kick out of it as an educator.

I've seen Big Daddy no less than 20 times and it has made me laugh each time i watch it...but i'm a sucker for dumb.

I have not, but i'll look into it.

I don't mind that Sandler movies are dumb--I mean, I love, really love stuff like Top Secret! and even Tommy Boy--it's just that I don't find them "good" dumb... although Wedding Singer wasn't too bad. I'm sure I'll rent the gay firefighter thing eventually.

whoa, i'm in no way reccomending you rent that flick...if it comes up on cable and you have absolutely nothing better to do, then check it out. i thought i'd hate it too, the trailers looked horrible...but it wasn't as bad as Little Nicky.

also, i did see the trailer for the signal...i think before the host. looks extremely interesting.

I saw it a couple months ago, and overall it's not very strong, but it has some interesting aspects, including some weird reworkings of Romero, Re-Animator, and even Dead-Alive. It starts as an off-kilter horror movie, and then for a stretch it completely embraces broad, deadpan comedy--and that stretch was definitely worth seeing. Too bad it didn't stick with that.

For a change Delon plays the cop, though he isn't far removed from the bad guy existentialists he's played in previous Melville films. This might not be Melville's best, but it is a decent crime drama, and it does sport a French speaking Richard Crenna, as well as the lovely Catherine Deneuve.

This arrived from Netflix today. Not sure how it got so high in the queue, but all right.

I keep watching these things and keep not enjoying them.

This one has plenty of ripe ideas about the relationship between gender, power, and sex, so if you felt like unpacking it I'm sure you could locate some metaphorical richness--but I didn't feel like bothering.

Last night:

It was a sold-out screening, which added to the fun. Sitting next to me was a guy with his young son (perhaps ten years old), and it was terrific listening to this man share his enthusiasm for Strummer with his son.

I got to see this last night finally. It's playing at IFC in NY with the wicked sound system and cushy chairs. I thought that was an utterly fantastic movie, although admittedly I'm probably a bit biased. I had planned on seeing it with spawn, but the write-up called for drug usage and nudity so I was a bit hesitant. After seeing it now, we're going to head into the city on Friday and make a day of it.

Awesome. My daughter isn't old enough for the movies yet, but obviously that's something I really look forward to.

good luck w/ that one...i have a feeling you won't really like it. i barely did and i'm an idiot.

It was okay... I liked the story and tone more than most Sandlers, and I felt its low blows were mostly harmless. (Most of the so-called "homophobia" really seemed to be jokes about the folly of stereotypes. As for Rob Schneider's nasty Asian routine, that's another matter...) Still, I can't imagine wanting to ever see it again.

I saw Southland Tales last night. I really enjoyed it, but the response of my friends was mixed. I thought it was a wonderful piece of cinematic nonsense. The reviews seem split over the film's incoherence. I never thought it aspired to mean much or had a central thesis--instead it had a jumble of ideas and plot threads. It was supposed to be absurd. A film with no heroes and no meaning might amount to some of the best commentary on our times.

The experience was made a little more surreal by the long butt-rock (I just looked it up...3 Doors Down) music video recruiting for the National Guard during the previews. Here: http://www.1800goguard.com/movie/index2.php Wasn't there a Simpsons episode like this?
