the return of a '90s television staple

Speaking of cheesy muscle-bound television, I think I'm addicted to "Ninja Warrior" on G4.

We watch it every night and on weekends. :thumbup

Someone told me that he loves it but his wife thinks it's stupid. I told him his wife is stupid, and told my husband to count his blessings. :D

Shingo Yanamoto, I love you!!

The new Eliminator looks like something right out of Ninja Warrior. Having to swim under the fire then climb a 30 foot net is just insane. I did get a kick out of that Marine chick swimming head first right into the gas pipe though. I was surprised she was able to finish after that.

The women in the first hour were both horrible (they both nearly passed out from exhuastion during the Eliminator), and the men's competition was lopsided. The second hour was much better, although I really hated that guy that lost -- he made it sound like he'd been praying for AG to come back on the air every day for the last 14 years. I'm pumped to watch the rest of the season. Wolf is awesome.

It was everything I'd hoped it would be, and more.

:yes A real cheeseball delight.

Yeah, they stole that rolling log from NW. Now they need the spider walk, or maybe the pipe slider.

That guy was a knob. We decided he was Drew from The Office.

gripes:

they need to work on the editing. the cameras were all over the place, and going to commerical right before an event was a major momentum killer. also, cut back on the talking. the show only needs one interviewer. I doubt either Ali or Hogan are much of a draw, cut them and use the money to hire a better commentator. The original series had guys that actually sounded like sports broadcasters, the guy on the new series sounds like someone announcing parting gifts on a game show.

Agreed. Also, they've hyped this "Hellga" character, but all she ended up doing was serving as the last line of defense during the "Gauntlet" event -- and not very well, either.

Is it just me, or does the play-by-play dude sound like Van Earl Wright, who used to be one of the Headline News sports guys (early '90s)? I need to record the credits tonight to see if it's him (I bet it isn't, but the voice does sound similar).

You're actually right, that was Van Earl. I don't remember him as a Headline News guy, but he also did sports for Channel 4 in Detroit for a while. I knew the voice sounded familiar but I couldn't place it until you just mentioned that, and Wikipedia confirms it.

Huh. I checked his Wikipedia page last night during a commercial break and that info wasn't there (yet).

He's exactly the kind of cheeseball American Gladiators needs, but last night he wasn't his usual cheesy self. C'mon Van Earl, we know you've got it in ya...

I hadn't known until I checked that page last night that he had been on channel 4 ... I recall him doing some work for the local Fox Sports franchise, which must have been after channel 4 (and right around the time we moved here).

His sign-off from his Headline Sports segment was legendary ... for being ridiculous.
