EL the Famous
The way you have framed the debate suggests that all abortions result from one carnal night of sport fucking
Beltmann
I think my issue with many pro-lifers is that they do not lend any credence to the idea of personhood. A fetus is undoubtedly human, as it will never reach full term as a Cockatoo
Spawn's dad
How much of all this is hiding behind terms, or shoving one term against another to get another to change their actions. How much is to simply avoid the feeling of guilt? if it isn't a person, isn't a human, there's nothing to feel guilty about. It's just a medical procedure. So we split hairs over what is and what isn't life, as if that rift isn't already in the woman who would consider an abortion, and in the process we create greater rifts between people without even touching or coming close to touching the truth of what is life. Or the truth of what it means to posses that power to create or take life. To see closely what it's like to hold both choices in ones heart and to know it and all its implication. It's clear we can't handle it, because we can't even handle talking about it.
Good Old Neon
The problem with "personhood" is that it's a manufactured re-definition of human life, and I've never heard a definition of "personhood" that couldn't apply equally to certain human beings long after birth, as well. For example, all of your listed aspects (in bold) are true about the comatose, or otherwise cognitively impaired. (I guess they must relinquish their status as a "person.") The reason I don't buy "personhood" as a starting place is because, as a universal definition, it seems to overlook the truly essential qualities of what constitutes life, and replaces them with more arbitrary, less inconvenient traits. I agree wholeheartedly, but are these not decisions we already make, as uncomfortable as they are? Current technology is such that we can preserve the lives of even the most severely brain-damaged. At some point, given today

miss jayne
I think it would be nice if we put the same energy into health care and education for the children that are here as we do into when its right or wrong to have an abortion.

Reni
Rocky, I swear you know that story......I did local volunteering for the 84 Reagan/Bush campaign - I was in the paper and was a guest of honor at that dinner. I was 10. I switched track before '88 and campaigned for Dukakis. Â In the grad asst. office we had the newspaper story hanging on the wall as a joke, next to our posters of Malcolm X and Angela Davis.
