hardinggr
Hey y'all, First of all thanks to Wilco for being the best band in the world. Period. Gutted we missed out on the last tour in the UK, but I'm sure our time will come again. Also, thanks for all those of you who have been torrenting the live shows - you are fabulous people!! This kind of topic has probably been started many time before but I'd like some of your expert opinions! Met a stunning girl last night who's into a lot of the same kinda music as I am but did not know about Wilco! The shame of it! Well I plan to educate her with a compilation cd and wheel her in at the same time! I've come up with this comp... if anybody can think of any GREAT songs I have missed out please feel free to inform me. Bear in mind it has to fit onto one cd. If she likes it there we all know there is more than enough material for a second disk!!! Thanks in advance! hardinggr
Thanks for the reply. Where would you replace Cars Can't Escape with?
Guest David Puddy
a wilco/jeff compilation without misunderstood and sunken treasure is terribly incomplete, in my opinion.
lamradio
cars can't escape That's a tough decision to make.. It's hard replacing any Wilco song because they are all great in their own way, but if it was my CD, I would replace Casino Queen. It's still a great tune, but IMO, the weakest of that list. And I'm sure I'll catch hell for this!

Yeah that is a great riff.. Is that Jeff playing that riff or Jay? Probably Jay.. Jeff didn't really get into the lead stuff until later.

Guest David Puddy
I think it can't be done, at least not well. which is why you should sit her down, and play her A.M. thru SBS and be done with it. and then make your move...
hardinggr
Thanks for the tips David! I have to say though both albums were growers on me but hopefully it will do the trick (along with some wine of course!!)

lamradio
Ah sorry, my mistake. Can I skip the Billy Brag tunes on Mermaid Avenue though? I prefer the songs that Jeff sings on as well, but there are a few Billy Bragg tunes that are really good. "Way Over Yonder in Minor Key".. And "Hot Rod Hotel" is one of my favorite tunes of both albums... It's how I got my screen name..
Robby
OK, my two cents worth: If you are looking for a quieter mix: I'm Always In Love - Solo Live Acoustic version (from some of the early taped shows that were done)Cars Can't Escape - From the YHF Engineer Demos ( a better version in my opinion)At My Window Sad & Lonely (Solo Acoustic version)Ashes Of American Flags (Live In Chicago version)Hesitating BeautyReservationsPlease Tell My Brothers (Golden Smog)Love & Mercy (Golden Smog) If you are looking for more up-tempo stuff: Won't Let You Down (from YHF sessions)Hey Chicken (Loose Fur)Thanks I Get (I'm a sucker for this one)Monday (Live In Chicago version - was an extra song, not in the general release of this album - great version)Not For The Season (There were some demo versions of this song done as a rocker that I liked better than the released Loose Fur version) Many others already listed are my favorites as well and I don't know that I haven't repeated what others might have posted, but I'd tried to give you some "lesser known" songs (or lesser known versions of songs) that I have really liked. It is easy to find these - links to them I beleive are pinned on this board.
