ikol
why not universal health care? Because I don't believe it is the government's role to provide healthcare. because poor people haven't earned the right to be healthy. What about poor people that smoke? Should they be forced to quit if the government is paying for their healthcare?

John Smith
I would say that a Democrat President and Republican Ideally I like the presidennt and congress to be opposite parties with congress having veot override potential but not a lock...it leads to moderation in my opinion. Moderation has been missing over the last eight years where most every action has been a take no prisoners and compromise is defeat. That just does not work. Because I don't believe it is the government's role to provide healthcare. What about poor people that smoke? Should they be forced to quit if the government is paying for their healthcare? Is health care a form of national security?

IRememberDBoon
ikol youre a pre med it seems. what should a hospital do when an illegal immigrant shows up with his arm cut off?? who should pay for it?
ikol
BWARK! Let the old ladies rot! BWARK? Some might view a healthy population as necessary to national defense. Some might doubt whether universal healthcare would mean universal health considering that the biggest killers are modifiable behaviors (smoking, obesity, alcohol, etc.). ikol youre a pre med it seems. what should a hospital do when an illegal immigrant shows up with his arm cut off?? who should pay for it? Treat the patient and bill him.
IRememberDBoon
Treat the patient and bill him. what about the hospital's money???!!! you are going to force hospitals to treat people without insurance?? what if they dont recover their money?
Tweedling
what about the hospital's money???!!! you are going to force hospitals to treat people without insurance?? what if they dont recover their money? That happens all the time.
John Smith
That happens all the time. Yep and the rest of us are "taxed" to pay for those bills. Taxed through increased premiums and increased hospital and doctor costs. So what's the difference if we pay for it via a tax for insurance vs a tax of sorts that increases our medical costs all around.
bjorn_skurj
Some might view a healthy population as necessary to national defense.I seem to recall hearing government officials were startled by the state of the population when they started to draft people in World War II. EL the Famous
I think there are a lot of people who agree with conservative fiscal policy but disagree with the Republican platform on many social issues which is designed to appease the Religious Right. There isn't a party who supports free trade, free markets, small government, business-friendly policies, and personal responsibility that also supports abortion rights, gay rights, environmental protection, etc. You can get one set of policies with Democrats and the other with Republicans, but there aren't any major parties that support both. Many who consider themselves moderates or independents would support candidates with these views, but it doesn't match the existing party platforms. Dead on.
bjorn_skurj
The question remains: What to do with people who can't afford the health care they need? Should they be allowed to die, as Darwinism would dictate that if they didn't have the hustle in them to get a job good enough to pay for the health care they need, then they aren't worth saving? Should they be billed as such a rate that they basically become permanent indentured servants to a debt no honest man can pay? Should they depend upon the kindness of others - the Blanche DuBois plan?My take on it is that if every other nation like ours (industrialized democracy) has some form of universal health care and makes it work, why can't we? Are we REALLY that much smarter than the Brits, Canadians, French and Germans?

Are we REALLY that much smarter than the Brits, Canadians, French and Germans? I'm fine with the concept, as long as I can continue w/ my exisiting coverage and no change to the care i'm receiving from it. Unfortunately, i'm still not convinced that would be the case. bjorn_skurj
I'm pretty sure at this point that any plan that reduced benefits for some in favor of others wouldn't make it. I will probably be stuck with my meh health insurance until I get a better job or get some sort of disability.
