I recorded a demo (finally)!

Recommended Posts

It's a Johnny Cash-style country murder ballad.

"C'mon Angel"

We recorded and mixed this thing in just an hour or so. Didn't turn out bad for such a short stint. I think I'm gonna use this guy for a couple of tunes on the next record, but this is just a demo.

Still, I'm pretty happy with it for what it is.

I really wanted to approximate a mono, Sun Records mid-50's kinda sound. And I think that, for a digital 1-hr. recording, we did okay with that. Too clean, of course, but not bad.

Hope you listen and like.

Thanks for indulging me.

that's good stuff. it got me thinking that maybe some people in here can help me out in choosing which mix of a song to go along with that i'm working on at the moment. so i've uploaded them all to here - showing 4 alt mixes, all differing in arrangements to see which bits people like best. i've got my favourite, which at the moment is the first one, but maybe people can change my mind on that. sorry, none of them have the vocals on yet cos i'm still working out all the harmonies for the backing parts, which is why it would be good to know which version is best to put them on to. they all have bits about them that are unfinished, but i thought it would be nice to stream them anyway.

if you hate them all then tell me, cos i'm not adverse to scrapping things and starting again as you can tell by the fact that there's 4 versions of it so far.

(oh, i play it all - either via computer emulators - such as the strings and mellotron - or really me with bass, chord organ, guitars, stuff like that)

Nice song Todd. Agree with the Lou Reed comment, I hear some Farrarness too.

Joss I agree with the others about alt take 1. I think it's because of that keyboard or whatever carrying more of the rhythm, sounds good. Also something kinda Eels-y about that take to me.

Todd, nice fucking song man.

I like "alt take 1" it felt the most cohesive to me. Did you record it soon after your favorite take 1? Sometimes (in my recording) I have found that I get my juices flowing during "take 1" and then knock out the second take rather quickly...or something. Either way, cool tunes.

I was thinking about this today and, I wrote it as a Johnny Cash thing.

But I can really hear Dwight Yoakam or Steve Earle singing this. It's too bad that they are two of the very best songwriters, themselves and have no need for this.

Sorry for the bump, I was seriously just thinking about this and wanted to respond.

Great song my friend. Great voice. Does your band do any touring? Maybe your band and mine could do some gig swapping sometime.

Thanks, Lam.

My band is, since August or so, just me and my guitar. And I do not do any touring, since I am a daddy and family guy. But, if I do get a gig sometime around here (where they actually let me suggest another band for the bill) I will let you know and try to get you on there. That would be fun.

Ah, I was under the impression you were in a band. I'm sort of in the same boat you are. I am married with a three year old, and four year old, so the band thing is more part time now than it used to be. But ever once and a while, we will take a weekend road trip. Like a few months ago, we played in New York, and before that, New Orleans.. Yes, family comes first, but they understand that I have to play music.. It keeps me sane. :thumbup
