23/3/08 -- Auckland, New Zealand

For Wilco's first "real" (i.e. non-festival) show in New Zealand, the setlist was as follows:

Sunken Treasure

You Are My Face

Muzzle of Bees

Handshake Drugs

War on War

Side With The Seeds

A Shot in the Arm

Radio Cure

Shake It Off

Pot Kettle Black

Impossible Germany

Via Chicago

California Stars

Forget the Flowers

Jesus, etc.

Walken

I'm The Man Who Loves You

-------------------------------

Hummingbird

On and On and On

Spiders (Kidsmoke)

-------------------------------

Hate It Here

Kingpin

The Late Greats

Actually, I saw on a printed setlist that after The Late Greats, the show was supposed to conclude with the trio of Red-Eyed and Blue>I Got You (At The End of the Century)>Outtasite (Outta Mind), but those didn't get played (perhaps for time reasons). Still, no sign of the technical problems that plagued them at the Bluesfest the previous evening and the BM Centre was a pretty nifty little place to see a show -- both general admission and reserved seating, low stage, no barricade and a total capacity of about 1,100.

Man, what a great time last night. I was in the front row of seats directly in front of Tweedy and they were great - the only other time I'd seen them live was in 2003 opening for R.E.M. so this was a real treat to see their first "real" show in NZ as Jeff called it. And they played two of the songs I most hoped they'd do - "California Stars" and a stunning "Kidsmoke." And while "Shake It Off" was one of my least favorite album tracks the live version was great. Nels is particularly amazing, I'd been hearing so much about him and he didn't disappoint, he's a real MVP on stage.

I hope someone did a torrent, I'd love to hear it!

Also wanted to add Jeff did a great rewrite of "Kingpin" where it became all about NZ (in fact he couldn't shut up about how much he loves it, he offered to marry a guy to emgirate)

"I wanna be your kingpin, living in (New Zealand)

I wanna be your bigwig, living in (New Zealand)"

Awesome! Thanks for the setlist. I'm curious to see what they've done to make shake it off a better song. I've always felt that song could be a barn-burner live. Hopefully a torrent will pop up at some point.

It hasn't changed hugely from the record, just grooves a little more freely I think. It's pretty hard to take your eyes of Glenn for this one.

Radio Cure was sounding great too.

he does that pretty often, depending where they're playing. he did the same in melbourne and sydney last year (although i think he referred to sydney as "steak and kidney")

looking forward to wednesday down here!

Glad to hear it has more of a groove. The studio version was too choppy. Every time I start banging my hands on the steering wheel in anticipation of an intense build-up, the rhythm stops and kills the momentum. I do, however, believe that Wilco will change the song for the better.
