My Homemade Lap Steel: "Woodie"

Recommended Posts

Well, she's finished.

The guitar consists of a piece of mahogany I got for free, a scrap piece of nautical wood.

I got all the parts from guitarfetish.com. The pickup is the Retrotron NY II, a Rickenbacker style P90. Great sound: bright and warm.

I got the nut from ebay. It's bone.

It plays a little funky, and the string spacing is "unique." But overall, the guitar has its charms.

I like it. Lots actually.

Congrats.

Just looking at that makes me want to get one...

...and run it through a highly overdriven amp just to hear what kind of whack-job sounds I could make with it.

Of course I suggested to someone recently that she run an autoharp through an overdriven amp. So there's a bit of perspective for you.

I should've bought this when I had the chance:

clicky

what is unique about the sting spacing?

I kinda rushed cutting the nut, and the string spacing didn't turn out it quite as I intended: the distances between strings gradually decreasing from the low E to the high E. The spacing between the strings on mine is a bit all over the place. Ha. "Unique"=sloppy.
