Sweet Papa Crimbo
The most earthshaking, incendiary tour happened 30 years ago. Like a phoenix Bruce Springsteen arose from the ashes of a career seemingly derailed by legal problems and record company hype backlash. He burned across the country playing epic three plus hour shows and showed that it was REAL. Some music critics have stated that he SAVED rock and roll in 1978 (and have said it without irony). I don't know about that...all I know is that it was the best I Have EVER seen...even to this date. Remember Because the Night Candy's Room She's the one

Vacant Horizon
i'm a casual bruce fan. been in and out of him for the last few years. his sound is just so closely associated with bad times in the 80s for me, that it's hard to take him seriously. anyway, went down to phillips arena in atlanta last friday night and got a great ticket for $20. the show was entertaining and i can see how people just love him. the new stuff sounded so much better than that brendon obrien neutered album, magic. anyway, well worth 20 bucks, not 100 bucks though. clarence looked like he is literally on his last legs and bruce is a bit tired. hope to hear some more solo stuff from him in the future. nebraska is prolly the one i go back to most.craig
CortezTheKiller
his sound is just so closely associated with bad times in the 80s for me, that it's hard to take him seriously.Huh? His debut album came out in 1973. I'm not sure what you mean by this. Born in the U.S.A. definitely has a 1980's sound to it. I've seen interviews with Bruce where he said he was looking to make an album that captured the sound that was going on at the time. Other than that record, I wouldn't say he has an "80's sound." The record you specifically say you'll go back to (Nebraska) was released in the fucking 1980's ironically enough. The Springsteen albums I cherish (Greetings, Wild/Innocent, Born to Run, Darkness, The River, Nebraska, Tunnel, Tom Joad, Devils, Rising, and Magic) don't sound very "80s" to me. I find that Springsteen haters tend to focus on Born in the U.S.A. which is like saying you don't like Neil Young because you don't like Harvest. It's such a small piece (yet highly visible piece) of what the artist is all about.
Guest Muncle Douchey
Nebraska, Greetings, Born to Run, & Darkness are four of the greatest albums ever made. especially Darkness haven't heard any of his newer stuff at all though.
tugmoose
He may have saved Rock & Roll, but he couldn't save John Kerry. I had a chance to see Bruce at the Spectrum in 78, but I had a kinda punk attitude ("No I don't wanna see Bruce F-in' Springsteen"). Something tells me if I had gone I woulda been smirking the whole show at all the people who thought they were having a good time. I definitely needed a good ass kicking back then. Those are all 80s albums to me. I was introduced to him in the 80s with those tunes being played WAY too much on the radio. now to me, the 80s are 84-92...the 70s are 1968-1983
TheMaker
Other than that record, I wouldn't say he has an "80's sound." Coughtunneloflovecough... Still, both of those albums are fucking perfect. As in, "could not be better." Solid songwriting will often overcome even the most egregious production-oriented handicap.

Sweet Papa Crimbo
Christ, that's a life changer of a show. "Rosalita" is the greatest song anyone has ever made, and "Jungleland" and "Thunder Road" are right fucking there. Side two of The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle is the best 20 minutes of music ever committed to vinyl. EVER. YMMV...but you'd be wrong. Spanish Johnny drove in from the underworld last night With bruised arms and broken rhythm in a beat-up old Buick But dressed just like dynamite He tried sellin' his heart to the hard girls over on Easy Street But they sighed "Johnny it falls apart so easy and you know hearts these days are cheap" And the pimps swung their axes and said "Johnny you're a cheater." Well the pimps swung their axes and said "Johnny you're a liar" And from out of the shadows came a young girl's voice said: "Johnny don't cry" Puerto Rican Jane, oh won't you tell me what's your name. I want to drive you down to the other side of town where paradise ain't so crowded, there'll be action goin' down on Shanty Lane tonight All them golden-heeled fairies in a real bitch fight Pull .38s and kiss the girls good night Oh good night, it's alright Jane Now let them black boys in to light the soul flame We may find it out on the street tonight baby Or we may walk until the daylight maybe Well like a cool Romeo he made his moves, oh she looked so fine Like a late Juliet she knew he'd never be true but then she really didn't mind Upstairs a band was playin', the singer was singin' something about goin' home She whispered, "Spanish Johnny, you can leave me tonight but just don't leave me alone" And Johnny cried "Puerto Rican Jane, word is down the cops have found the vein" Oh them barefoot boys left their homes for the woods Them little barefoot street boys they say homes ain't no good They left the corners, threw away all their switchblade knives and kissed each other good-bye Johnny was sittin' on the fire escape watchin' the kids playin' down the street He called down "Hey little heroes, summer's long but I guess it ain't very sweet around here anymore" Janey sleeps in sheets damp with sweat, Johnny sits up alone and watches her dream on, dream on And the sister prays for lost souls, then breaks down in the chapel after everyone's gone Jane moves over to share her pillow but opens her eyes to see Johnny up and putting his clothes on She says "Those romantic young boys All they ever want to do is fight" Those romantic young boys They're callin' through the window "Hey Spanish Johnny, you want to make a little easy money tonight?" And Johnny whispered: Good night, it's all tight Jane I'll meet you tomorrow night on Lover's Lane We may find it out on the street tonight baby Or we may walk until the daylight maybe ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Spread out now Rosie, doctor come cut loose her mama's reins You know playin' blindman's bluff is a little baby's game You pick up Little Dynamite, I'm gonna pick up Little Gun And together we're gonna go out tonight and make that highway run You don't have to call me lieutenant Rosie and I don't want to be your son The only lover I'm ever gonna need's your soft sweet little girl's tongue Rosie you're the one Dynamite's in the belfry playin' with the bats Little Gun's downtown in front of Woolworth's tryin' out his attitude on all the cats Papa's on the corner waitin' for the bus Mama she's home in the window waitin' up for us She'll be there in that chair when they wrestle her upstairs 'Cause you know we ain't gonna come I ain't here for business I'm only here for fun And Rosie you're the one Rosalita jump a little lighter Senorita come sit by my fire I just want to be your love, ain't no lie Rosalita you're my stone desire Jack the Rabbit and Weak Knees Willie, you know they're gonna be there Ah, sloppy Sue and Big Bones Billie, they'll be comin' up for air We're gonna play some pool, skip some school, act real cool Stay out all night, it's gonna feel all right So Rosie come out tonight, baby come out tonight Windows are for cheaters, chimneys for the poor Closets are for hangers, winners use the door So use it Rosie, that's what it's there for Rosalita jump a little lighter Senorita come sit by my fire I just want to be your love, ain't no lie Rosalita you're my stone desire Now I know your mama she don't like me 'cause I play in a rock and roll band And I know your daddy he don't dig me but he never did understand Papa lowered the boom, he locked you in your room I'm comin' to lend a hand I'm comin' to liberate you, confiscate you, I want to be your man Someday we'll look back on this and it will all seem funny But now you're sad, your mama's mad And your papa says he knows that I don't have any money Tell him this is last chance to get his daughter in a fine romance Because a record company, Rosie, just gave me a big advance My tires were slashed and I almost crashed but the Lord had mercy My machine she's a dud, I'm stuck in the mud somewhere in the swamps of Jersey Hold on tight, stay up all night 'cause Rosie I'm comin' on strong By the time we meet the morning light I will hold you in my arms I know a pretty little place in Southern California down San Diego way There's a little cafe' where they play guitars all night and day You can hear them in the back room strummin' So hold tight baby 'cause don't you know daddy's comin' Rosalita jump a little lighter Senorita come sit by my fire I just want to be your love, ain't no lie Rosalita you're my stone desire ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Billy he's down by the railroad tracks Sittin' low in the back seat of his Cadillac Diamond Jackie, she's so intact As she falls so softly beneath him Jackie's heels are stacked Billy's got cleats on his boots Together they're gonna boogaloo down Broadway and come back home with the loot It's midnight in Manhattan, this is no time to get cute It's a mad dog's promenade So walk tall or baby don't walk at all Fish lady, oh fish lady She baits them tenement walls She won't take corner boys They ain't got no money And they're so easy I said "Hey, baby Won't you take my hand Walk with me down Broadway Well mama take my arm and move with me down Broadway" I'm a young man, I talk it real loud Yeah babe I walk it real proud for you Ah so shake it away So shake away your street life Shake away your city life Hook up to the train And hook up to the night train Hook it up Hook up to the train But I know that she won't take the train, no she won't take the train Oh she won't take the train, no she won't take the train Oh she won't take the train, no she won't take the train Oh she won't take the train, no she won't take the train She's afraid them tracks are gonna slow her down And when she turns this boy'll be gone So long, sometimes you just gotta walk on, walk on Hey vibes man, hey jazz man, play me your serenade Any deeper blue and you're playin' in your grave Save your notes, don't spend 'em on the blues boy Save your notes, don't spend 'em on the darlin' yearlin' sharp boy Straight for the church note ringin', vibes man sting a trash can Listen to your junk man Listen to your junk man Listen to your junk man He's singin', he's singin', he's singin' All dressed up in satin, walkin' past the alley He's singin', singin', singin', singin'

markosis
Last spring I stood in front of the old house Bruce once rented in Long Branch, NJ during the 70s. The same house where he wrote alot of Born To Run. It felt pretty epic.
CortezTheKiller
Coughtunneloflovecough...True. However, the "Valentine's Day" in my mind has atmospheric pedal steel (a la John Neff) replacing the 80's synthesizers as an accent.

LouisvilleGreg
I'm about 8 hours away from showtime in Charlottesville!!!! My second show of this tour and about 15th overall. I've got GA tickets, so we stand a chance of being right up front. It's done by a random lottery on this tour. The set lists from the past week or so have been stunning. Holding out hope for "the E Street Shuffle" "Kitty's Back" and anything off of Darkness. Actually I'll be stoked to hear just about anything including most all of BITUSA. Though musically, that album may be subpar, lyrically it's so freakin' dark and heavy. "Downbound Train," "Dancing In The Dark," "BITUSA." I lived through it and loved it then, and to me even if you write off all mainstream 80's music, certain albums still shine, and "BITUSA" and "Purple Rain," immediately jump out of the pack. I'll give a full and detailed report in after the show tommorow.
