Mrs. Peel
Then stop arguing with me! He talks about sleeping during the time of day that soldiers get sunstroke. Like in his line of work he's up in the middle of the night and asleep during the day.
Mrs. Peel
Ok, so I'll throw this one out there. Am I the only one who, every time I hear the intro of "The Blue", sort of expects him to break into a cover of "Sexual Healing"? That is neither a criticism or a compliment, just a funny thing I noticed. Perhaps he is saving that one for the live show. The Blue>SH>Blue transition would be allsome. You heard it here first. It sounds more like Jack Johnson should start singing to me.
solace
*shrug* i'm not one to take people's lyrics too literally usually anyway, so i won't argue with you
Mrs. Peel
Soldiers Get Strange is clearly about soldiers, but the soldiers line in Sunstroke is just a metaphor. Now go back and listen more carefully. There will be a test.
lizish
geekiest music related thread ever. Album sounds good.
solace
It sounds more like Jack Johnson should start singing to me. John Mayer here... that progression is totally something he'd write
Mrs. Peel
geekiest music related thread ever. And proud of it. John Mayer here... that progression is totally something he'd write Thank fuck there's no phrase like "bubblegum tongue" in this song.
myboyblue
my favorite lyric in "The Blue" is the one about her body being a wonderland.
TheMaker
1. No Choice in the Matter---2. Sunstroke-3. Cigarettes and Wine4. However Long5. Seven-Mile Island And the rest I like just about equally. All killer, no filler, I've gotta say. Really brilliant record.
solace
the last song is the only one that doesn't do a ton for me at the moment. it's not bad, just seems sorta meandering.
myboyblue
"Good" seems like it will be the most fun to see live.
Mrs. Peel
I'll let you know in a few weeks!
Moss
I just want to say from the bottom of my heart THANK YOU! (You know who you are). I will give you my ranked list soon! Unfortunately I have to wait until April to see him live but it's a great little club he's coming to.
CortezTheKiller
Guess so, it seems really pointed to me though. I don't hear any other subjects. I hear it as him talking to the band. "I never meant to get bored with you but I never meant to stay".I guess that's why it's called 'interpretation'. Some great points. However, the line "You ain't the type to be travelin', so why not just stay." to a dude that's spent the better part of the last decade on the road doesn't seem to fit. If I had to guess, I'd say this song has more to do with Shonna than Patterson. Either way, a great, powerful song.
Mrs. Peel
You're right, that's the one line that doesn't fit the profile. But the "I never meant to stay" line doesn't fit Shonna.Oh well, whoever it's about, it's pretty acerbic IMO.
myboyblue
great song regardless of who it's about it.... "why did i call you, i shouldn't be giving a fuck"
Mrs. Peel
My favorite line of the whole album is "They tell me you walk on the water now, but I know who showed you the stones". Love it!!
Guest Hollinger.
the beginning of Sunstroke had been bothering me because it sounded so familiar, but I accidentally placed it today... Idiot Prayer by Nick Cave.
Guest Hollinger.
I have not ranked all of the songs like some of you, but right now I would put Good at the top of the list. I bet it's fucking awesome live.
cre618
My favorite line of the whole album is "They tell me you walk on the water now, but I know who showed you the stones". Love it!! Forgive me if I'm being dense....but...I get the intent of the lyric, but not sure of the meaning. What "stones" is he referring to? Is it something biblical? The stones at the bottom of the river? Either way, love the song. Jack

JackI take it as the person in question doesn't really walk on water but is standing on stones hence giving the illusion of walking on water.

Mrs. Peel
I take it as the person in question doesn't really walk on water but is standing on stones hence giving the illusion of walking on water. Everyone thinks the person is God-like and walking on water when they are really standing on stones underneath the surface. IMO of course.
