AC Newman @ the 400 Bar

Recommended Posts

Well last night solidified AC Newman's status as a pop God. He and his band put on a high energy show that was just as much fun as a New Pornographers show. Instead of Neko we got Nicole Atkins (my new rock star girlfriend ) for 3 songs who I immediately fell in love and the violin player was also cute. He played most of the new record and a lot of Slow Wonder - no NP songs. Some funny banter too - he said this was the best Minneapolis show ever - including those early Replacements shows! :lol

The Broken West was also good. Not as tight, but a very solid opener. If you get the chance to see this show I highly recommend it - a great double bill.

nice!

i was not in the mood for live music just yet after SXSW so I bailed (that and i'm not exactly HUGE on both Carl and the Broken West's latest records). glad to hear it was a great show though and hopefully a good turnout.

i saw him at the Triple Rock on the Slow Wonder tour and it was a ton of fun as well.

now if i'd known Nicole was touring with him i might have made an effort to get there :lol

Yeah, I did notice you weren't there - I usually see you up near the front at most shows. Nicole only sang on 3 songs, but she/they were unbelievable. It was a good turn out, but i don't know if it was sold out...but it was a crowded front floor.

I didn't realize Nicole was touring with him either, but that's cool that you guys got to see her! She definitely adds another element to the Get Guilty stuff, even if I'm not as big a fan of it as some of Carl's other work. I saw the first show for this record way back in November in Brooklyn and Nicole was there too. Hopefully she'll be there this weekend when they're back here.

Not sure who the violin player was in his band but when I saw Son Volt last year, Chris Masterson opened with Eleanor Whitmore, a violin player who is also cute:

And, is AC Newman the same Carl Newman that was in Zumpano and if so, does he play any tunes of theirs in concert? Look What the Rookie Did and Goin' Through Changes are two great albums.

Same guy, but I haven't had the pleasure of seeing him for a few years so I don't know what the setlists are like. I really loved Zumpano, back in the day.

Not the same violin player - AC Newman's is Tara Szczygielski. Try saying that 3 times fast.

He pretty much sticks to "A.C. Newman" material, from my experience. Especially since he's promoting a new record. Usually he doesn't even do New Pornographers' stuff, though at the Brooklyn show last fall, he did do a solo acoustic version of "The Fake Headlines" as a second encore. But I think that was fairly unusual.
