cngwms
Hey all, I'm looking to create a mix of music from the late 80s / early 90s. What do you believe are some essential songs that I need to include from Manchester bands like the Stone Roses, Charlatans, Happy Mondays, Smiths, etc? Thanks in advance! SquashedFrog
Not purely a Manchester box set (though the classic bands are included), the Brit Box release from a couple years back by Rhino is a great starting point. Also, please let this be the diversion for the person who is thinking about submitting "Don't Cry Out Loud"
PopTodd
Do they actually have to be FROM Manchester? pnêyu
You could fill up your mix extensively with Joy Division offshoots alone:--New Order: take your pick, but "Blue Monday" is probably the classic--Electronic: "Get the Message"--Monaco: "What Do You Want from Me" Don't forget:--Morrissey (solo): "Suedehead," "Everyday is Like Sunday"--James: "Sit Down," "Laid," "Born of Frustration"--Inspiral Carpets: "This Is How It Feels to Be Lonely" If you want to expand your mix, the late '70s were a great time for Manchester bands:--Buzzcocks: "Ever Fallen in Love"--The Fall: "How I Wrote Elastic Man"--A Certain Ratio (actually, I'm out of my depth here, but I remember the single "Certain Things Are Likely" and I like that they got their name from a Brian Eno lyric) As well as the late '90s:--Doves--Badly Drawn Boy--Alfie--I Am Kloot Finally, dance music has flourished too:--Chemical Brothers--Lionrock--M People--Future Sound of London
