Isn't this in the key of E?

-0-00-0-00-0-00-0
-0-00-0-00-0-00-2
-1-11-2-11-2-11-2
-2-22-4-22-4-22-2
-2-22-4-22-4-22-0
-0-00-0-00-0-00--

The main riff, so E mostly, with the F#m movement on it, x2 then to the A. Fits over the verses.

Then the choruses go like

D A D then some chord, not sure of the name, if you can help:

-2-
-1-
-2-
-1-
---
---

then Em A, Em A, then repeat the chorus thingies.

Most of the song repeats after that.

That's my take.

This is correct. I was watching JTs fingers on Saturday and this is definitely correct.

isn't the verse just 022100 (E) --> 022200 (Esus4 maybe?)

the f#m thing doesn't sound too right to me. at least in the verse

You got it. It is E Esus4 and A for the verse. Pretty sure.

Then for the "It's a secret... etc lines... D A D D#dim

I don't care anymore... is Em A

That's the whole song.

This looks right and matches what Jeff was doing on the Conan show.

Yeah, JT loves this chord. It shows it in Shes a Jar, Sky Blue Sky, Hate It Here and somewhere else, but escapes my memory.

That is the D#dim chord. He does dig that one. On Ashes of American Flags too.

Edit: D sharp diminished to clarify.

I don't know about you, but I find it a little tough to finger. Feels a bit awkward. As a internal training device, I have been fingering a D7 chord (which I can do easily), then sliding the 1st fret finger over to complete the ensemble.

It is an awkward fingering. It took some practice to get it down. I do it with 1 (D 1st fret) 2 (B 1st fret) 3 (G 2nd fret) and 4 (high E 2nd fret).

Try Barring the first four strings first fret with index finger and use middle finger on g string 2nd fret and ring finger on e string 2nd fret.

Yep. This is how I do it.
