The Walrus
Hey Folks, I've been doing some cross-referencing with the Wilco discography and was hoping for some help... 1. What year does the officially released version of "Cars Can't Escape" come from? It was a free mp3 download; I read: "Offered as a free Wilcoworld.net Roadcase download for owners of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" --in 2002. Is that really right? I thought it was a 'Ghost' re-recording/outtake... AND the version I have is a 160kbps mp3...is that the highest quality version? 2. Was the live version of "Airline to Heaven" that streamed from Wilcoworld.net (from way back when) from 'Kicking Television'? The only info I have (and I'm not sure it's 100% accurate) is that it hails from 5-?-2005, The Vic, Chicago. This would fall in line with the 'Kicking Television' dates and coincides with that release. Can anyone confirm? 3. There was another free mp3 from Wicoworld.net of "Spiders (Kidsmoke)" supposedly from 6-12-2004...but is this correct? Or from the 'Kicking Television' dates? Any more info? 4. I know this one may have been answered already, but does anyone have information regarding the studio version of "Ian Dury"? Like what year was it recorded? Or from what album is this an outtake? If you can help me out...THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

I created that discography that Analogman posted the link to. i can vouch for the accuracy of the information. If you have a source for any better information about any of the tracks, please let me know or post it on that pinned thread. "Airline to Heaven" was credited as a "Kicking Television" outtake, thus the date in the discography. The band didn't specify which night it was from. Yes, the "Spiders (Kidsmoke)" date is correct. Cars Can't Escape was released on Wilcoworld.net right around the same time as Jay Bennett released his version on his "Bigger than Blue" album in April 2004. I can't remember if Jay was given partial credit for that track or not. If memory serves me correctly, most of the track is a YHF outtake with some tweaks and overdubs added in 2004. I have no idea what the bitrate was. 4. I know this one may have been answered already, but does anyone have information regarding the studio version of "Ian Dury"? Like what year was it recorded? As far as Ian Dury goes, go here: http://www.gloriousnoise.com/articles/2009/wilco_i_wish_i_were_ian_dury.php and here: http://wilcobase.com/song.php?song_key=218 and here: http://forums.viachicago.org/topic/29817-ian-dury/ I've never heard of a studio version. It's more like an an unfinished song that was performed live a few times, then for whatever reason scrapped.

And the "Ian Dury" I have is undoubtedly the soundcheck version. Again, you solved some mysteries for me!!!!! THANKS.
The Walrus
One last question, folks... The mp3 I have of the official download of "Cars Can't Escape" is 160kbps...is there a higher quality version?

I have no idea what the bitrate was. I have shows from September-ish 2003 where they played Cars Can't Escape and Jeff talks about it being available on the internet then, maybe not officially. I'm pretty sure it's purely a YHF outtake, without any tweaks on it, the version sounds almost exactly like the one Jeff and Jay listen to in the cut scene from the documentary. Jay was given official credit on the itunes tag I have for that track, but it's possible I did that myself years ago and forgot about it. One last question, folks... The mp3 I have of the official download of "Cars Can't Escape" is 160kbps...is there a higher quality version? No, don't think so. I don't think anything was being officially released in 320 in those days, some of us were still on dial up and wanted downloads faster rather than higher quality. --Mike

And your theory about this version of "Cars" as being the same one they played back in the movie is EXACTLY what I was thinking, too. But I wouldn't be surprised if they did do a final tweak or two...perhaps.
