rpmurphy
Does "yankee hotel foxtrot" just stand for trucker lingo like "wilco" or does it stand for something else? Thanks
lamradio
Does "yankee hotel foxtrot" just stand for trucker lingo like "wilco" or does it stand for something else? Thanks It's part of the NATO Phonetic Alphabet Yankee Hotel Foxtrot stands for the letters YHF.
Analogman
Also - check out: The Conet Project
W(TF)
from Wikipedia; The album was named after a series of letters in the phonetic alphabet that Tweedy had heard on the Irdial box set The Conet Project: Recordings of Shortwave Numbers Stations. On the fourth track of the album Phonetic Alphabet - Nato (help·info), a woman repeats the words "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" numerous times; a clip from this track was placed in the Yankee Hotel Foxtrot song "Poor Places". Irdial sued Wilco for copyright infringement, and a settlement was reached out of court.
lamradio
Hopefully not veering too far off topic, but speaking of getting sued, I have a clip of Air Traffic Control chatter on my bands new record. I recorded it from a live stream of ATC chatter from an airport. It's basically "turn right heading blah blah, cleared to land blah blah blah".... I wonder if I can get sued by the FAA for something like this...
LouieB
and a settlement was reached out of court. And sadly they can't use it in concert anymore... LouieB
lamradio
And sadly they can't use it in concert anymore... LouieB Interesting.. Oddly enough, I don't think I've ever noticed that part missing from the live version.. I guess because I'm just caught up in the other noise.
tinnitus photography
And sadly they can't use it in concert anymore... LouieB which is weird, since how does Irdial own copyright to a public transmission??? hell, you can download all the stuff for freehttp://irdial.hyperreal.org/the%20conet%20project/
Guest Speed Racer
which is weird, since how does Irdial own copyright to a public transmission??? hell, you can download all the stuff for free Listening and recording/re-broadcasting are two different things. Much of the set is edited from actual broadcast. A twenty-minute transmission including two, four-minute data bursts and several minutes of static will be edited to reduce the static. tinnitus photography
i guess my confusion stems from how Irdial is able to assert copyright on these transmissions...they didn't create them.
Guest Speed Racer
But they captured, edited and remastered them for sound quality. And then packaged it. And sold it. As I understand it, they can claim ownership of the remastered work. If Wilco had dialed in on the actual transmission that broadcast the "YHF...YHF..." clip and recorded it themselves, and used that on the record, Irdial would have had no hand in that particular recording. Besides, no one responsible for creating the broadcasts will EVER claim responsibility, so there's that.
tinnitus photography
gotcha. i remember when the Conet Project came out, and the Aquarius Records news letter was raving about it. i didn't buy a copy.
Guest Speed Racer
Oooh, I love Aquarius. Lovelovelove their "out there" stuff - I've purchased some fun recordings from that place. If you're at all interested in the Conet Project, the liner notes really are worth it.
thejokeexplained
Coming back from Florida right after YHF was released i stopped for lunch at a seafood joint going into Mobil AL. In the bathroom they had displayed all the nautical flags and their meaning. Yankee- Dragging anchor Hotel - Captain on BoardFoxtrot - In distress I always thought it a perfect title, if in fact Tweedy used it as code for the making of the record and the state of Wilco at the time. http://www.marinewaypoints.com/learn/flags/flags.shtml

choo-choo-charlie
I remember in another YHF thread someone made a joke that Reprise was accidentally sent The Conet Project instead of YHF. Reprise, thinking that the former was actually the latter, was appalled and asked Wilco to make a more "radio-friendly" record, starting the chain of events that eventually lead to Wilco's departure from the label. Wouldn't that be funny?
thejokeexplained
I love that! Mind if I use it? i don't have the rights to what it means. i'm just stating facts! I had always wanted to ask Tweedy about it in the few times i have met him after gigs, but the mixture of brew, weed and excitement of meeting him it always slipped my mind. Beltmann
I always thought it a perfect title, if in fact Tweedy used it as code for the making of the record and the state of Wilco at the time. Perfect, too, for thematic reasons: The entire record is about the difficulties of communication.
