Moss
Nice! I just remembered a "private event" Jack Daniels-sponsored show by the New Pornographers a few years ago in Madison. A.C. Newman busted out one of their free bottles of whiskey and passed it around the first few rows of the crowd, and I think I took a sip. Looking back, it's a shame Dan Bejar wasn't at that show. I was at a Pearl Jam show where Eddie Vedder lit up a cigarette, took a puff, and passed it into the crowd, I was right in front of him behind one other guy. I let it go over my head after the first guy took a puff. I really had no desire to share a cigarette with Eddie or anyone else.
Dmada
Don't know why but that made me laugh. I always imagined Waters in the back of a limosine would be like a facist dictator or something like the character in the movie version of The Wall. The image of him hanging out the window waving seems contrary to his image. Alot of people have mentioned the pros and cons tour here recently. I must stick on the album as I haven't heard it in a long time.well he wasnt hanging out of the limo like a teenage girl on prom night the limo was making a left turn out of the venue the window was open and all the fans (20 people) on the other side of the street saw him and went nutsso he just kinda looked over and waved. But yeah, it has morphed into more of a laundry list of concerts... as music geek things often do.

How could one not be moved by Dylan and the band or the really young and sexy Emmylou? The list of stuff that didn't move me.....is much longer than this.... LouieBYeah I know he really didn't tour much at all so the fact that you caught him is pretty wild! I am assuming this was the tour you caught?http://www.topix.com/forum/who/george-harrison/T25KUT9VMKARG3BD2

This was the Dark Horse tour which was not too long after Concert for Bangla Desh. When I was a kid (meaning college and directly after) my friends and I were George fans. One of my friends from out of Chicago made sure we went. it was pretty wild to say the least and very moving. As far as listing groups just to list them, none of those are on my list. If so I would have to list some of the VC buzz bands which I saw at fests which were totally underwhelming at the time. On that list would be Steve Malkmus, The National, Spoon, the Pernice Brothers, and Yo La Tengo (whom I actually really like on record.) Perhaps it was the festival atmosphere that messed them up, but I have seen others in the same venues that were perfectly fine. LouieB

I think it may have been only Japan but I remember Clapton played lead and I heard some of the bootlegs. In fact I think they have a live release.

He just did some shows in Japan with Eric Clapton (December 1991). There is a live album from the shows - Live in Japan.

jff
I saw New Riders of the Purple Sage in 1992 (or maybe 1993). The highlight was when the guitarist turned the volume of his Telecaster all the way down and held it up to his vocal mic and played a nice solo. For all I know that might be a common gimmick, but I've never seen anyone do it before or since. It was really incredible sounding. There were probably only about 20 people at the show in a venue that holds 1,000, and one of them was a crazy old guy who looked like a bum who told me and my friends that he was close friends with Hendrix and all sorts of other sixties musicians. We thought he was just some delusional burnout, but at the end of the show the New Riders guys left the stage and walked directly over to hang out with him, so at that point we believed him. That was a fun night, but I bombed my geology lab midterm the next morning thanks in part to having properly attended a New Riders concert the night before.
Party Cheetos
Just saw this thread recently, so beg pardon for the (maybe) unneeded/wanted bump. Roger Waters (9/29/2006) - My first show ever! I went with my sister, and dad and sat in the lawn seats (needless to say, I'm pretty sure we were the only people not baked that were there). Hearing Roger yell "EINS, ZWEI, DREI, ALLE!" blew my mind as he opened with "In The Flesh". The Decemberists - I've seen this band 9 times now, and each time is truly memorable. The first gig of theirs that I attended was at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion where they played a free set. They had an orchestra accompany them for most the set, but it was just the five of them on stage for the encore. They played Mariner's Revenge song while a storm was rolling through, so hearing the thunder while they played the song was pretty incredible (or epic even...I rarely use the word, but it truly was). A few months later I saw them on the "Long of It & Short of It" tour, where one night they play all their long songs, and one night they play the shorter songs. It was an AMAZING two nights, and Chicago was the only city that saw the tour, because Colin got ill. On the first night they covered "Echoes" by Pink Floyd, one of my favorite songs of all time. The Halloween show they played at Wheaton college was incredible too. Very Christian college, so it was funny to hear the band play songs about murdering people, and dead children. Really bizarre, but fun show. When the band was touring behind their album "The Hazards of Love" on the "A Short Fazed Hovel tour", I saw them play 5 shows (playing the new album in entirety, and then a shorter set). It was just a blast seeing them every time and being in the front (and meeting the band, eventually). Also, their last Chicago show of the tour, I requested a song and they played it . Radiohead (8/1/2008) - Yeah, it was a festival (Lollapalooza), but it didn't take away from how amazing of an experience it was to finally see a band I had loved for a long time. My friend Jessi and I waited all day (well, 7am till their set ended around 10:15) to see them, and it was well worth it. We were really close to the stage, and they played almost everything I wanted to hear. When they went into "There There", I lost my mind. Spoon (4/1/2010) - Horrible sound at the Aragon didn't ruin this show for me. I met Jim Eno after the show, got a setlist, and they spontaneously played "Jonathon Fisk", one of my favorite songs by them. and now I'm just waiting to finally see Wilco, and I'm positive it'll join this list (8/15/2010)
