Wilco -- 23/9/10, Vienna, Austria

Recommended Posts

I don't think I have any great insights on this gig, but the crowd as a whole seemed to really dig it. Even after the big Hoodoo closer, people stayed in place for a few minutes and tried to urge the band back on stage for one more song. It didn't work, but the enthusiasm was apparent.

Jeff made a comment about what a good crowd it was, and I think he was on target. There were a decent number of Americans in attendance, judging by Jeff's informal poll of who was from the USA and who actually lived here, but unlike a few shows I've been to in Europe when Americans have been fairly obnoxious, everyone seemed pretty well-behaved tonight.

The setlist might have been a little conservative for anyone who's seen more than a couple of shows, probably owing to the fact that it was the band's first-ever show here. But hey, not every show can be filled with a ton of nuggets. It seemed like the band fed off the energy of the crowd, tacking on Outtasite and Hoodoo which apparently weren't on the printed setlist. If I'm not mistaken, this was also the longest show in terms of the number of songs (27), they've done on this European tour.

And let's face it, any show where you get a shirtless Josh (the bass/keyboards tech) on cowbell for Hoodoo is a fun one as far as I'm concerned. :thumbup

Some random notes:

The Gasometer is an architectural wonder, four HUGE old decommissioned brick storage tanks for natural gas that have been converted to offices, apartments, shops, and a concert hall.

Band seemed in high spirits. Jeff mentioned this was their first time in Vienna and praised the audience several times.

For Deeper Down, Jeff said, "We played that song just for you, because it has a harpsichord."

Before Heavy Metal Drummer: "We sometimes joke about all the Americans we see over here, but we know how difficult it is to travel this far, and we really do appreciate it, So this one goes out to Deanna and the Torres brothers." Ironically, Deanna was the same fan (from California) who had her camera personally confiscated by Tweedy at Dublin's Vicar Street in August 2009.

Another song was dedicated to Franz Schubert, because Glenn's ancestors are apparently buried in the same cemetery as the composer.

The people of Vienna are marvelous. So friendly and enthusiastic.

What an excellent venue! As mentioned, the gasometers are visually stunning and all the concert facilities were well-organized with extremely friendly staff (the Germans/Swiss/Austrians seem particularly good at this).

For me, the sound was pretty good a few rows back and I'm sure it was better nearer the desk. The setlist had a nice mixture of rock and more pastoral numbers and the encore seriously rocked (Hoodoo was hilarious!).

The crowd really played its part and was both energetic and friendly. I said hello to bbop and learned that he is not in fact an idle millionaire who has devoted the rest of his life to Wilco shows (although the second part might be true)!

You're so right about shoes, Paul! Just walked about 6 miles around Brussels airport, and it would've been more comfortable walking on broken glass. Missed my connecting flight back to Mum and Dad's in Cumbria, which was a little stressful, and in the panic lost my passport and boarding card, which was found by some lovely person and handed in. Nevermind, I'd do it all again if I could. Still here, in Brussels, and thinking about the wonderful show last night.

It was a spur of the moment decision to come to Vienna. I've never travelled without Ray and our boys before, and was a bit nervous, but I'm pleased I did it. It was a fantastic show. I had goosebumps all night. Vienna was beautiful, but the best bit was meeting so many great people in the queue. I've never been so glad to see someone as I did when when I clocked Paul in the distance. Heather and Russ too, hope to meet you again, soon. Portland? Enjoy the rest of the shows. Wish I could be there.

Flying back home to Melbourne on Sunday, and waiting for Wilco's return to those shores. . . .

You were missed last night Mende.

I wasn't necessarily trying to be either positive or negative (although it would be more of the former, if anything). I was mostly trying to be objective. :pirate

I think it was a fun gig, especially for those who might not have had a chance to see the band before. Certainly I realize that I've had more than my fair share of opportunities, so I definitely didn't mean for it to seem like I was being jaded or anything. The band seemed to really feed off the energy of the audience, like I said, and Jeff wasn't kidding when he said it was a really good crowd. :thumbup

P.S. It was nice to meet badger, and of course to see Rock Pools again. What a pleasant surprise! So sorry to hear you had some troubles getting back home, but I hope it was all worth it. See you again soon...:)

i was in Vicar street (first night show) and i dont remember this...what happened?

anyway...i read an article about the show in Prague with Nels, where he mentioned that they are ok with fans recording at the concerts cuz it helps more people to hera abut their music... Now it kinda makes no sense when Jeff confiscated someone camera? :D

@bböp : no worries. i was joking :-) it's normal that some people enjoy the show more and some people don't. It was (only) my second wilco gig . that probably explains why i enjoyed it so much :D

It was at the second night show. ;) Mentioned here:

We were there and actually met Deanna. Kind of surreal to see them in Vienna this year!

And audio recording is still OK, but I have to say I enjoy the shows much more without the constant distraction of cameras.

I was there, too, and there was definitely a good vibe in the audience, loads of people singing along but no loud-mouthed drunks, at least not around us. Great that Wilco have ventured as far as Vienna on their European tour, and can only hope they continue eastward next time around: we came over from Hungary for the occasion, and I know there were quite a few who came all the way from Serbia and Croatia. Maybe that's what added to the special atmosphere? :) :)

This show was definitely a stand out for me too. Glad to meet Rock Pools! Hope to have the chance to meet up again soon.

The Gasometer was a unique place, even found some blue suede shoes for my tired old feet. Also enjoyed the market and the taste of sturm!

The crowd was great. A very enthusiastic Jesus etc. sing along to boot, where a memorable moment was when a rather monotone voice came from a guy in the crowd. And cool to see the surly security guy bobbing his head to California Stars.

And I agree with the Bop, seeing Josh on cowbell makes for a fun time.
