The Amazon Kindle

Recommended Posts

Just got one of these as a gift.

I never really wanted one, but now that I have it, it seems pretty cool. The lack of a touch screen makes it kinda clunky for anything having to do with the internet, but as a pure reader, I think that it'll be cool.

Those of you who have one: how do you use it? What does it do well besides being a reader? Anything? You like it?

Sorry for not resurrecting a 3-year-old thread. Thought there might be some new thought on the thing since then.

You took it the wrong way, I guess. I was just sayin', Look, here's a bunch of posts in a thread about the thing you were asking about. I bet just posting the link made it seem like I was all Hey man use the search function or something. Whatever.

EDIT: If I wanted to be a dink I'd have just said "You couldn't have just PMed Good Old Neon instead of starting this thread?"

my wife had hers die a couple of weeks ago. i think she got 1.5 years out of it? she loves it, and will get another one.

Therein lies the reason I got a Nook instead. I read about issues with Kindle's reliability and some piss-poor customer service from Amazon regarding it.

The Amazon battery is also non-replaceable. Nearly all of the competitors have replaceable batteries. IMO, well worth the few bucks more you'd pay to NOT have a Kindle.

And I LOVE Amazon otherwise...

Not a problem. I get a lot of snootiness both when I don't bump old threads, and when I do bump threads that are too old.

It's all good, and I am glad to see that old thread, too.

I’m not going to go all fanboy, but to suggest the Kindle is mechanically inferior to the Nook pretty much goes against every head to head review I’ve read – and I’ve read quite a few. At this point, the Kindle is about as stable and reliable as tech gets. And by all reports, Amazon bends over backwards (and then some) to please Kindle owners. I own a Kindle 1.0 – after two plus years, I’ve yet to run into a single issue. I recently purchased the Kindle 3 for my wife as an anniversary gift. The improvements made to the display are simply fantastic, and the page turn speed is nearly instantaneous.

As for the battery – the Kindle’s can be replaced by Amazon, for a fee. But more importantly, the newer version can hold a charge for over a month. By all reports, the internal battery will last quite a long time. I’m going on 3 years, and the technically inferior (replaceable) Kindle 1 battery shows no signs of slowing down.

The Nook is a fine device, but its sluggish performance coupled with B&N’s uncertain future detract from its overall desirability.

after trying to hold up and read stephen king's "under the dome" (it's huge!) and recently receiving a $40 barnes/noble giftcard, i think i'm gonna get a wi-fi nook. don't really think i need a 3g version - not planning on being anywhere i can't access a wi-fi hotspot... read lots of nice reviews about the nook, too. just a matter of money at this point for me...

Pretty much exactly the reason I got me a Sony e-reader. I thought it was easier than hiring two strapping young men to hold the book for me while I treid to read it in bed.

I love this Sony thing though....I have been reading a whole lot more since I got it.
