Black Moon noise?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Maybe this is an unusual first post on a forum, but I'd first like to say that LOVE Wilco, and I love The Whole Love. It's quickly become one of my favorite records EVER. It's got everything. Songs, performances, great production, awesome mixing(!), genre changes, instrumentation, and it's well queued.

That said, I was wondering if anyone else here has heard the low ticking noise in Black Moon, and if so, do you have any idea what it is? I think it might be the sound of a tape machine or recording device, or some other noise in or near the room where the tracks were recorded. It starts at about the .5 second mark, and it seem to be mostly on the left side. It seems to get a little bit louder at about 9-10 seconds in. As the mix fills in, it seems to dissipate, which makes sense. It can be heard at the end of the tune as well.

Just me? Anyone else hear it?

I think it's cool! :)

Yeah, I definitely hear it, assuming we're talking about the same thing--not a tick-tick like a clock, but slower--but I don't think it's an incidental thing. I think it was intentionally included and is part of the overall sound mix.

Yes, definitely not like a clock (though to my ears, it sounds much faster than a clock, unless maybe it's a wristwatch ticking. A ceiling fan, maybe?). I believe it's there intentionally, too--which is why I think it sounds cool. I like hearing the room noise!

Thanks for the reply!

it may just be amplifier buzz

nels plays guitars with single coil pickups, which tend to pick up interference quite easily (as well as generating an audible hum on their own)

also, there's a wurlitzer in the track, and those are known to crackle and pop and hiss quite often

It's definitely not crackle, pop or hiss. To my ears, it has a definite projector sound to it. But I think it is probably more accurately described as 'ear candy'.

This is a great track. I definitely prefer the album version with strings more than the version included on the bonus disc with strings removed. The way they were recorded, you can almost hear the bows streaking across the strings. Lovely. But to address the question posed in this thread -- I don't hear it as crackle, pop or hiss either. Gotta be some vintage piece of equipment.
