bböp
Apparently this was the first time Wilco has played in Jackson, which I guess is mildly surprising in that they've probably played just about every other city of that size in the South at least once by now. That, and the fact that one of the band members—Mr. Sansone—is from just down the road (and proudly displayed that by sporting a t-shirt from the Music Emporium, a longtime record store in Meridian, Miss., that closed in 2010 ). The fact that the venue was a seated civic auditorium-type of place with a covered orchestra pit that separated band from audience by at least 20 feet didn't necessarily bode well for a energetic show. It really couldn't have had a different feel from the previous night at Sloss Furnaces. But whether it was because it was Saturday night or people were just very enthused about the band finally coming to their town, Jackson represented itself rather well for the most part. On the floor anyway, it seemed like virtually the entire crowd was on its feet from the start — and remained standing even when the band opened with One Sunday Morning, which is always a bit of an acid test for a potential standing-sitting conflict. "Jackson...we've never been here," Jeff said early on. "Pat's from around these parts; he told us you'd be cool." In fact, the only real audience problems arose toward the end of the show when one drunken girl decided to climb up onto the orchestra pit and try to dance around before she was just as quickly whisked off by one of the band's guitar techs. Apparently a couple of other women at far stage right also tried to climb up beyond where they were allowed to go and were also quickly dispatched. There seemed to be a relative lack of uniformed security personnel like you would typically see at a club, though there were some cops scattered around. As for the show itself, it was a pretty solid one. No huge surprises if you've been following recent setlists, but just about everything was well played. About the only "problem" happened in the first encore after Dawned On Me when Jeff made a comment about Glenn's sweat-soaked shirt looking like it couldn't hold any more liquid and the sweat marks on the front resembling a Rorschach test and some discussion that I believe involved Glenn's needing to go to the bathroom. When they got on with it, Glenn launched into what he thought was the next song, but unfortunately ended up false starting because he hadn't realized the band modified their setlist a bit (cutting Candyfloss and The Late Greats out of the first encore, as it turned out). So they had to start again, this time with everyone on the same page going into Jesus, etc. I guess I was a bit surprised that they decided to finish off with Hoodoo Voodoo (and the return of the shirtless roadie!) in this venue of all places. But it was fun, as always, giving the hometown boy one more chance to shine and sending the audience off into the night with smiles all around. And isn't that the point, in the end? Shug
You Are My Face!! This one's been absent too much, for my taste. Thanks, bbop, as always, for the timely and thoughtfully detailed reviews. I appreciates it!
nalafej
Figures the first time I ever have a front row seat for a Wilco show, it is 20+ feet from the lip of the stage. 48th time seeing the band. At the bottom of the list as far as venues I've seen them. Wilco played really well. I was worried about the energy after seeing a big change in the energy of opening band, Purling Hiss from the prior night. Wilco are pro's and did just fine, even in the strange venue in the middle of downtown Jackson where nothing is going on. I mean nothing besides a huge wedding and the Wilco show. Probably due to the fact that it was a weekend I guess?? It was a 3pk night! Opening with three Whole Love songs. 1st encore featured (after Dawned) three straight Yankee songs and the second encore opened with three Being There songs. The crowd was great, if a little rowdy. No security and we had two amateur photographers sneak up the stairs on Nels' side of the stage for extended photo time. Douchy. A couple paper airplanes landed on stage as did a few drinks. Loved the fact that everybody was on their feet the entire show. Highlights: The news songs area really sounding good in the set. Loved Whole Love and Born Alone especially last night. Beastsbelly
Anyone have a bead on the Jackson show poster? I haven't seen it pop at the Wilco Store nor have I been able to track down contact info for the designer. Any leads appreciated, thank you!
bböp
Anyone have a bead on the Jackson show poster? I haven't seen it pop at the Wilco Store nor have I been able to track down contact info for the designer. Any leads appreciated, thank you! According to Wilcoworld, the Jackson poster was designed by Justin Shultz. If you Google that name (and poster), you come up with a site for a Justin Shultz Design. I have no idea if it's the same guy, but I suppose you could try contacting him via the info on that site and maybe you'll be able to track that poster down. Otherwise, I guess check eBay? Good luck! Beastsbelly
Thanks Cheeztastic, not the same guy, but I appreciate it...looks like the artist is here: http://the-flying-chair.com/ If anyone else is still looking for the poster, it is now available at the Wilco Store. Finally, thank you choo choo for your help.
choo-choo-charlie
Ah, I didn't do anything; just made a snarky comment. Glad you found what you were looking for.
Boss_Tweedy
The band was great. The crowd was great. The poster? Well, that's a lot of green.
