Forecastle Fest, Louisville KY

Just got home after great Forcastle Fest. Suprised to see no thread started yet. I caught JTE's show, Dr Dog , Andrew Bird, and MMJ Saturday. Had to get through a couple of regional acts to get to Deertick on the wall. Neko Case was not my usual fare but she and her band were good. Then Wilco from the front row right in front of John.

I had traveled to Geneva last week to see them play such a fantastic show that I was worried that the Forecastle show might be somewhat anticlimatic. I was wrong. They were on from the get go. It also helped that they played my son's request of "You are My Face". We had talked about it the week before and I didn't think that song kind of fit the vibe of the summer festival scene but again I was wrong.

Only downer of the evening was the 11 o'clock noise ordinance. Got to give them credit for cramming their set full for the 90 minutes they had to work with. They should have had the Saturday set as MMJ's set went on and on and on and on and on.....ect. I was really looking forward to seeing MMJ but they failed to sway, me then the George Michael cover for their encore put the nail in the coffin for me. I was done.

Crowd got their money's worth with the Wilco set. Next up is Columbus for us.

MMJs forecastle set didn't sway? Wilco's Forecastle set was better than MMJ's? I love Wilco, and the show was amazing, but better than MMJs? I've seen  Wilco shows that were better than plenty of MMJ shows, but those two stacked up in particular? (Biased, again, but...) I've seen MMJ 35+ times, and at the time of that Forecastle show, it was the best I had seen. I've seen em 7 times since forecastle, and its no longer the best for me, but it was great.

 

 

And, as for the cover... the best way I've ever heard any reviewer describe ANY bands covering of any song was something along the lines of "MMJ's irony free covers...."

That really nails it. covers that usually would be ironic and therefore annoying, but are actually just good. and fun.

Never said that Wilco's set was better Than MMJ's... but that I would have preferred to have seen Wilco get the longer slot. I did enjoy the show and I don't think I have ever seen a crowd more enthralled by a band in my life. It was really a sight. But I just couldn't help thinking that they were pushing it too far. How long was their set? 22 songs. Nearly three hours? They could have had 6 or 7 more songs in the set. They were into it though, being in front of the hometown crowd. I'd like to see them again but maybe cover a Television tune ( See No Evil ?) and a little less on the Wham!. Looking forward to this years Forecastle Fest lineup announcement Monday.

Two things I can definitely agree with:

1. Wilco should've gotten a longer set. That was bologna time slot for a headliner.

2. MMJs jams can get to me. I don't really like jam bands, and far too often at MMJ shows I find myself wishing they wouldn't play Dondante or Phone Went West for 15 minutes so they could play more songs. I'm not the band though, what can I do?

 

 

 

 

 

Really random question: did Tweedy reffer to MMJ as My Morning Racket? I mean I know tweedy is tweedy, but I don't see how he hates MMJ. They've shared a stage together and everything
