bböp
Saw this on Brooklyn Vegan recently in connection with an upcoming show by the Japanese duo Mi-Gu and it made me really wish I still lived in NY (or at least the East Coast)... :crybaby Mi-Gu playing with Nels Cline
LouieB
They are playing Minn, so why not Chicago? LouieB
RaspberryJam
He's also playing 12/21 at the Arch St. Tavern in Hartford with Julien Lage.
Three dollars and 63 cents
They're apparently doing a small tour of New England, as they'll be at Club Metronome in Burlington on 12/19 and at Tupelo Music Hall in Londonderry, NH, on 12/22. Apparently they're also playing as part of a guitar festival in Toronto in early November. I think the venue is the Great Hall or something like that. The Baltimore show with Ben Goldberg on December 8 is at the Windup Room, according to the venue's website. Ars Nova is producing the Philadelphia show, but I still haven't been able to track down a venue for it. We'll definitely be in Baltimore, and maybe Philadelphia, too, if the timing's right. If Amtrak and the music gods cooperate, we may also be able to make it to those shows with Medeski Martin and Wood. It's been over a year since I've gotten to see Nels play in a non-Wilco show, which feels really, really weird.
bböp
He's also playing 12/21 at the Arch St. Tavern in Hartford with Julien Lage. That'll be an interesting place for them. Wonder why there and not that Cafe Nine place?
twoshedsjackson
Thanks for the tip on the Hartford show! Just ordered tickets.
JAK2112
Had no idea of this, glad to be in NYC. I wonder if he lives over here now, he has seemed to play a lot of solo shows around the city for the last couple of years. He Probably moved in with Yuka now that i think about it
RaspberryJam
That'll be an interesting place for them. Wonder why there and not that Cafe Nine place? I don't know. Cafe Nine is in New Haven which is about 45 min. away. Arch St is definitely pushing for bigger names; I'm seeing Blitzen Trapper there in Oct. The most interesting venue around is Infinity Hall http://www.infinityhall.com/ which is opening a new, bigger, but still intimate venue in Hartford. It's great news because Hartford needs something that size, right now we have to travel to Northampton, MA for a lot of music.
twoshedsjackson
@Raspberry Jam: I'm going to the Blitzen Trapper show, too - my first visit to Arch St. Tavern. Is it a good live venue? Also, I did a bit of homework on Julian Lage. He's an incredible player. He and Nels together ought to be something special for sure.

bböp
I honestly don't know. I always thought it was just a pizza joint! That's where the Autumn D did their "secret" aftershow with Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion after the Wilco show at the Bushnell in August. It's a bar, basically, so that's why I was saying it might be a weird venue for a duo improv performance. That said, I'm sure both of them have played much worse places. The stage is pretty low, as I recall, so I'd get there on the early side to avoid being stuck in the back, but otherwise it should be fine. Wish I could make it to this one... twoshedsjackson
@Raspberry Jam & bbop: Thanks for the info. Looking forward to both shows - especially Nels & Julian.

TheSunCaughtFire
Excellent (and varied) line up for the Sleepwalk festival in TO. Love what Luke says about Nels in his Welcome address: “I have always been a Wilco fan. Right back to their first LP “AM”, I’ve been a devotee of their post-alt-country, crazier-than-Crazy Horse anthems. Enter Nels Cline… Cline has been pushing the boundaries of improvisational jazz & New York experimental music (Is there such a genre??) for decades. His whirling right hand is, in itself, a thing to behold. When coupled with the endless array of textures & sounds at his disposal, we are at a loss to call his music jazz, rock, fusion…your call. The union between the atmospheric majesty & sublime lyrical ambitions of Wilco with the bravery & mastery of Nels Cline was nothing short of musical epiphany to music fans of many stripes. He almost single handedly closed the door on the alt-country chapter of not only Wilco but an entire culture of imitators, leaving Wilco holding the mantle at the vanguard of honest, ambitious, uncharted song craft & soundscape. We expect all the aural gymnastics you can imagine when Nels Cline graces our stage”.
Three dollars and 63 cents
Nels is playing a handful of shows as part of Ben Goldberg's quintet Unfold Ordinary Mind. They'll be at the Stone in New York December 5 as part of a series of shows curated by N.C. Singers drummer Scott Amendola, at the Windup Space in Baltimore December 8, and at Johnny Brenda's in Philadelphia December 9. On December 7, Nels and Yuka perform as Fig, again at the Stone. I wonder what happened to their album that was in the works? I thought it might've come out this year. I also have a hunch an album might come out of Nels' collaborations with Julian Lage, but I haven't heard anything for sure yet.
bböp
Scott Amendola just posted on Facebook that the Nels Cline Singers will be doing a four-night residency at Duende in Oakland in January! (It's Jan. 23-26, to be exact.) Crossposting from the event page..."Each night of this residency will feature two sets of music: The first by the trio exploring music new and old; the second collaborating with a different special guest! Special guests to be announced closer to the shows." Ticket info (already on sale) and more details on the gigs here.
twoshedsjackson
I just found out Nels and Julian Lage are playing in New London, CT (Oasis Room at The Garde Theater) on Dec 20th. This makes me happy as it's only 10 minutes from my house. So that's two nights in a row. Can't wait.
