remphish1
Gary held a living room show of sorts at a venue called concerts in the Studio in Freehold. The photo studio holds 50 and afterwords there is a potluck dinner. Gary mentioned he doesn't like the Americana label his music gets. They don't really fit it . He said he was influenced by punk bands and never really listened to much of the folkier artist. He also mentioned that he did a lot of drugs and alcohol and he was in a very bad place but he is all clean now! He said when we go to dinner drink and have fun it doesn't phase me. I also had a few conversations with Gary. Asked him to play Dead End Angel and he said he didn't remember it. Later during dinner I asked them about their adversion to playing Blue Earth stuff and he said that he just doesn't feel it any more. He said maybe if he liked to practice more he would feel it again. I asked him what is happening with Golden Smog and he said Jeff is too busy to pin down these days...understandable I guess...he mentioned he is producing a few bands now and writting songs with the guy from Tonic??? and might be working on a new solo album. I asked him about releasing Smile, Sound of Lies, Rainy Day and Blue Earth on Vinyl. he said all but Blue Earth most likely will be re-released on vinyl because of a record label thing Blue Earth won't. Gary seemed to be in great spirits and I am happy he is healthy now!

To me, Blue Earth mostly sounds like it belongs in a museum. A real cool museum. It has a way, way back sound. Only Ain't No End sounds like it could have been off a later album of theirs, and that is one they have played fairly regularly live. I love many others off that album, but I can understand why that record doesn't do much for Gary now.

Cold as Gasoline
This is great to hear, thank you for sharing! Going to see this strange Big Star tribute tomorrow at Park West in Chicago with Gary Louris, Mike Mills, and a host of notables. Should be interesting! Also going to see Gary Louris solo next month. Glad to hear he is healthy and doing well, because the Jayhawks' music is iconic and important to me. http://consequenceofsound.net/2013/05/big-stars-third-schedules-shows-for-chicago-new-york-city/(hope it is not like that chaotic video at the bottom of this article though with 8 zillion vocalists)
