  1. Don't put words in my mouth!

I'm saying you didn't follow directions.

    Oh I get it:

    A Ghost is Born

    A.M.

    Being There

    Kicking Television

    Mermaid Avenue

    Mermaid Avenue II

    Sky Blue Sky

    Summerteeth

    Wilco the Album

    Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

    Better?

  2. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

I haven't heard Wilco the Album; it just has to be better than Sky Blue Sky.

  3. Hey Gin -

Just got a quick chance to look over your Box Full of Letters tab. I think you're right on with Riff 4. Riffs 5 & 6, we're basically playing the same notes, just different version :).

Thanks. :cheers The top notes in our versions of riffs 5 & 6 are the same but the lower harmony notes are different. I think mine is closer to the record -- I hear that droning E and the harmony in fourths and fifths. Your version sounds good, too, but has more of an R&B feel with the moving sixths, though if you just play the bottom notes of your riff with the song, you'll hear how the first note (D#) falls outside of the A chord (A C# E) and kind of clashes. I think you can get away with either version depending on whether you want a Byrdsy/country rock drone or Steve Cropper R&B feel.

  4. On musicnotes.com they have sheet music that you can download for about $5 per song. The songs they have for piano are Hummingbird, Theologians, Hell Is Chrome, and What Light. I looked at the previews and these look like the real deal. Hummingbird and Hell Is Chrome would be nice to have. I might pick those up.

Wow. Those look pretty good. I took a good look at Hell Is Chrome and they still seem like arrangements to me, but much better arrangements. How I play it sounds more like the record than what is written (of course, I'm assuming that I'm playing what is written correctly). What gives me pause is that what I'm playing is a lot easier than what is written.

Anyhoo, $5 isn't expensive, but it isn't exactly cheap either (seeing as how the whole book is $25). I would consider getting one just to try it out and see if it is what I wanted before I got more.

  5. Besides the Wilco songbook, does anybody know of any piano resources for Wilco songs?

I searched here, but didn't find much.

Speaking of the songbook, what are the opinions here for piano players? Worth it?

It depends on what you want out of the songbook. If you want to play an arrangement of the songs (you know, playing the vocal melody with the right hand), then it's pretty serviceable. I personally dislike playing arrangements (I was pretty bummed as a kid when I bought Beatles songbooks and they didn't have the exact parts that the piano was playing in songs like Let It Be and Hey Jude). The songbook isn't worthless in that regard--it'll get you in the ballpark--but it's not the exact part, if that's what you want to play. But it's the same chords and that's all rock piano is about, anyway.

  6. I don't have a typical thing that I play when I pick up a guitar, though there are trends and tendencies. I will often play the opening lick to "I Looked Away" by Derek and the Dominos:

    0..V.....V.....V.....V......

    e--------------------------|

    B--------------------------|

    G--------------------------|

    D--------------------------|

    A--------------------0--2--|

    E-----------------3--------|

    1..V.....V.....V.....V.....2..V.....V.....V.....V......

    e--------------------------|--------------------------|

    B--------1---1----1--------|--------------------------|

    G--------0---0----0--------|--------0-----------------|

    D--------2-----0h2---2-----|--------0--------0--2--3--|

    A--3-----------------------|--------------0h2---------|

    E-----------------------3--|--------------------------|

    3..V.....V.....V.....V.....4..V.....V.....V.....V......

    e--------------------------|--------------------------|

    B--------1-----------------|--------------------------|

    G--------2-----------------|--------0-----------------|

    D--------------3--2--0-----|-----0h2------------------|

    A-----------------------3--|--------------------0--2--|

    E--------------------------|-----------3-----3--------|

Or the lick to "I Wanna Come Home" by the Bottle Rockets. I tabbed this about 7 years ago before I knew what I didn't know about listening and transcribing, so apologies for things that don't really happen in the song, but this is what I play. Also, I didn't have enough room to tab all of the hammer ons, but basically any time there is a fretted note immediately before of arter an open string, you hammer on:

    0..V.....V.....V.....V......

    e--------------------------|

    B--------1--1--1--1--------|

    G--------2--0--2--0--0--0--|

    D--------------------2--0--|

    A--------------------------|

    E--------------------------|

    1..V.....V.....V.....V.....2..V.....V.....V.....V......

    e--------------------------|--------------------------|

    B--------------------------|--------------------------|

    G--0-----------0-----------|--------0--0--0--0--------|

  7. Glad I could help! :cheers Yeah, A.M. is one of those forgotten albums for me; forgotten in the sense that I forget that there's a lot of great stuff on there. I think I have the demos, but I'll have to track them down.

I love capos because I am lazy, but if you want to avoid the capo (which I totally respect) you might find that the opening lick falls under the fingers a little easier by moving it up a position:

    1..V.....V.....V.....V.....2..V.....V.....V.....V......

    e--------------------------|--------------------------|

    B--------9-----10-9-----9--|--------9-----10-9--------|

    G-----------9--------11----|-----9-----9--------11-9--|

    D--9-----------------------|--------------------------|

    A--------------------------|--------------------------|

    E--------------------------|--------------------------|

I'm home sick again today, so I might add some more stuff a bit later.

  8. Really good job on the tabs, Groo. I play Box Full of Letters a bunch, so I thought I’d add a few bits.

I usually play with the capo on 2, and when I don’t it’s because I just play a whole step lower so I don’t have to learn new chords. Anyhoo, here’s the intro lick with capo on 2:

    i1.V.....V.....V.....V.....2..V.....V.....V.....V......

    f#-------2-----3--2--0--2--|--------2-----3--2--0-----|

    C#----------3--------------|-----3-----3-----------3--|

    A--2-----------------------|--------------------------|

    E--------------------------|--------------------------|

    B--------------------------|--------------------------|

    F#-------------------------|--------------------------|

It’s little different than what you have, but it falls under the fingers a little easier for me.

I think your verse licks are right on, but I hear riffs 4, 5, and 6 differently:

    r4.V.....V.....V.....V......

    f#-------------------------|

    C#-0--2-----3-----5-----7--|

    A--0--2-----4-----6-----7--|

    E--------------------------|

    B--------------------------|

    F#-------------------------|

    r5.V.....V.....V.....V......

    f#-5--5-----3-----2-----0--|

    C#-3--3-----3-----3-----0--|

    A--------------------------|

    E--------------------------|

    B--------------------------|

    F#-------------------------|

    r6.V.....V.....V.....V......

    f#-5--5-----5-----3-----2--|

    C#-3--3-----3-----3-----3--|

    A--------------------------|

    E--------------------------|

    B--------------------------|

    F#-------------------------|

The solo, to me, sounds like much more straightforward rock with licks and patterns that fall easily under the fingers. I tend to think that Brian Henneman (much like Jay Bennett) is a great guitarist, but probably cheats by playing the same major and minor pentatonic boxes that we all play but with a little more style (side note: I’ve been batting around the idea for a book on “The Guitar Styles of Jay Bennett”; not a bad idea if more than three people would buy it, and I wouldn’t get sued, and Jay Bennett wouldn’t beat me to it):

    * With bends, I usually specify the note you’re aiming for by indicating the fret that has the same pitch. When I have a ‘b’ without indicating a fret, it just means that you’re only bending a quarter step.

You didn’t have anything for the choruses, but there’s a wealth of good licks in there. Here I’m much more approximate with the rhythm and the voicings (who many notes of the chords you play), so let your ear be your guide:

Like I said, really good work on the tabs. I'm home sick today from work, so I thought I'd add a few things.

    Thanks!

  9. Okay, I swear to you that I will complete it tonight and post it probably tomorrow morning. There's nothing good on TV (though I will take a break for Hell's Kitchen, desptie its relative not-good-ness), so I should be able to knock this out.

Okay, not quite morning, but it's here anyway. I had to do an image because it just wouldn't make sense as text, though I might tke a stab at that a little later:

    Gun.jpg

So, I don't have a guitar or the song in front of me; I just have my notes to go on and I tend to remember things a little different than what my notes say, so I might go correcting later, but this should give you the gist.

    A couple of notes:

    (1) In bar 3, you should bend both the first and second string at the same time, but only play the first and then pluck and release the second string if that makes any sense.

    (2) I'm not quite confident that I wrote the rhythm correctly (especially in measures 3, 4, and 6), but I just wanted to have something done. Some of the notes happen pretty quick (and randomly), but you can take a listen for the rhythm.

    (3) Also the chords seem different to me than what we have tabbed before. I didn't really notice until I tabbed it out (I just assumed what teh chords were) so, again, I don't have the song or the guitar with me so I might look into that later.

Well, try it on and see how it fits.

  10. GIN!!! GIN!!! GIN!!

    YOU CAN DO IT!!

    :coffee

  11. Hey Gin,

Any luck on that one? Not to be a pest. This one is bugging me.

    Thanks!

Sorry I've been slow on it; I think I got it 95% figured out, but writing it out have been really difficult: there are strings that are bent while other string are ghost bent, and everything is not quite in time. I might have to do some editing and leave out random open string ringing and such so I can have something that people can understand when it's written in text.

    Also, I've been lazy.

Also, feel free to pester me to your heart's content; it's the only thing that motivates me.

  12. Does anybody have the guitar solo for this tabbed? Much appreciated.

I figured it out at one point, but I don't remember it off the top of my head. I'll take another listen and tab it out in the next few days if someone doesn't beat me to it.

  13. WOW! When I posted this site (yesterday) I was able to access quite a few JB & EB tabs but now it's giving me nothing! Sorry........ kinda f'd up :dontgetit

Huh, I can access those tabs. Anyway, thanks for digging up the site. :cheers

  14. I was thinking of tabbing "Like a Photograph" later. I did attempt "Charming and Plastic" earlier and it proved kinda difficult, lots o chords.

I think I know 'Like a Photograph' in more than just chord symbols form (actual tablature). Lemme see if I can write that out. It starts with a G chord on capo 3, if I remember correctly.

  15. Good job, joshead, on Drinking on Your Dime. I think the chorus is almost there, but it seems like there are a few more chords. Try this:

Cause [A] I'm still [E]waiting for [D]songs to be written

    [C#]Songs I know you’ll never hear

    [F#m] Don’t you think that I already [E]know [E7]

    All at [A]once I'm so [E]shy for [G]ever being [D]bitten

[C#]it's a seed but I hope that you know

    [F#m] that we can't let it [E] grow [E7]

After that it gets a little unclear in my mind. I think it goes to C, then to a loop of B, D, D/C
