  1. Okay, wrong key, but right chord relationships! Here's the first verse and chorus of Puzzle Heart:

    I think I found the [D]piece

The piece of my [Em]puzzle heart

I lost it when we [G]fell apart

    Yester[D]day [Dsus4] [D]

I got down on my knees

    I took the other [Em]99

But until now I could [G]never find

    the one that rolled a[D]way [Dsus4] [D]

    I found [bm]it when I was [A]sweeping up [G]all our broken dreams

    And I [bm]put in a [A]little box and [G]hid it carefully

    But [bm]on this sunny [A]Sunday after[G]noon I finally start

    To put [D]back the pieces [A] of my puzzle [D]heart [Dsus4] [D]

It goes on like this for a while and then there's that part where it repeats the line and it goes like this:

    But [bm]on this sunny [A]Sunday after[G]noon I finally [Gm]start

    To put [D]back the pieces [A] of my puzzle [D]heart [D7] [G]

To help you put [D] back the pieces [A] of your puzzle [D]heart [D7] [G]

    To put [D]back the pieces [A] of our puzzle [D]hearts [Dsus4] [D]

And back to verse chords. Fade out if you can. I can tab some of the little Jay licks should you like.

    Stay tuned for more!

  2. There are NO Jay Bennett tabs anywhere on the internet and only 1 on this message board. Does anyone know how to play any of the songs off of "the Palace at 4am" or "Bigger Than Blue" other than the Wilco stuff(ie-Cars Cant Escape, Venus Stopped the Train)? Im thinking Puzzle Heart, California, etc.

    any help is much appreciated.

You know, I wrote out the chords for California because I thought the progression was so interesting. I know I have it at home, so I'll track it down and post it.

Puzzle heart goes something like this:

Verse (I can't remember any of the lyrics):

    I now my heart's laid [E]out

on the table before my [F#m]eyes

Pieces every color shape and [A]size

    It's only missing [E]you

    And so on

Chorus (I really don't remember any of the lyrics):

And I [C#m]hope this letter finds you solving

    [A] Puzzles of your own

Making [C#m]sense of all the good and bad times

[A] you and I have known

If you [C#m]see me something something something

    [A] I'll be there to [Am]start

Help you put [E]back the pieces

    of your puzzle [E]heart

This is completely from memory, so I cannot immediately vouch for its accuracy, but it sounds alright in my head. Also, the [Am] might not happen in every chorus; I can't remember.

I'll fix this and add California later tonight!

  3. My girlfriend and I are fans of the show Top Chef and we celebrated our anniversary by going to Tom Colicchio's restaurant, Craft. As we were walking in, "My Darling" was playing on the sound system. After a few minutes at the bar, we were seated and, over the din, I could pick out "Via Chicago!"

Two Summerteeth songs on the playlist? It was a nice addition to a really fabulous meal.

  4. This is a followup on my previous post about modifying my Fender Champ 600. So, I'm looking at replacement speakers (I'm forgoing the kit and just getting individual parts that best suit my needs -- I'm also going to grab some NOS tubes if I can find a good deal), and will probably go with a Weber -- the question is ceramic or AlNiCo? Thoughts? Suggestions? I'm leaning toward the AlNiCo because as I understand it, though my understanding is fairly limited, they tend to be warmer, more harmonically complex, and tend to break up a little easier.

There's a lot of good info on Weber's speaker page: http://www.webervst.com/sptalk.html

Speaking of which, why don't you just call or email Ted Weber and ask him? Tell him about the amp you're working on and the sound you're looking for (or if you just want the classic sound of that amp) and he'll direct you to one of his line. I've never spoken to him (I bought my weber on ebay), but he's apparently quite responsive. I think I read somewhere that for fender deluxes he doesn't recommend alnico, but he might recommend that for the smaller fenders (I think the original little amps might have had them). I went ahead and stuck an alnico celestion blue clone in my fender deluxe reverb and it's actually pretty bright now, but it's also pretty vox-y. I think I like it.

Finally, alnicos tend to have a larger bell, so make sure you can fit it in your amp without knocking out the tubes!

  5. I agree with everything a.miller said -- except that ProTools is easy for a novice. I found it really tough. Not a vote against, just a word of caution that you may need to have someone help you or buy a book or watch some youtube video lesons something.

I will actually agree with both of you. To record a track, Pro Tools is pretty easy. The problem is that, as soon as you open up Pro Tools, you're immediately struck by how insanely powerful the thing is and how much you could potentially do if you knew what the hell you were doing. So you try to do something complicated and you're scrambling around the interwebs to find out how to do that trick that everyone else seems to already know how to do.

Watching my engineer friends who earn their living on Pro Tools is humbling.

But, yes, you'll want a book. Work that into the price of your Pro Tools system should you choose it.

  6. Well, I'm not exactly sure what part you're talking about (maybe you could hum it for us), but the acoustic guitar part (it's not a slide guitar, just a guitar played with slides -- um, if that makes sense) in the very last eight bars or so of the song will sound suspiciously like this:

    1..+.....+.....+.....+.....2..+.....+.....+.....+......

    e-/10-------------5-----6--|-/8--------------3-----5--|

    B--------------------------|--------------------------|

    G-/10-------------5-----7--|-/9--------------3-----5--|

    D--------------------------|--------------------------|

    A--------------------------|--------------------------|

    E--------------------------|--------------------------|

    3..+.....+.....+.....+.....4..+.....+.....+.....+......

    e--6-----------------------|--------------------------|

    B--------------6h8---6-----|--5-----------------------|

    G--7-----------------------|--------------------------|

    D--------------------------|--------------------------|

    A--------------------------|--------------------------|

    E--------------------------|--------------------------|

    5..+.....+.....+.....+.....6..+.....+.....+.....+......

    e--------------------------|--------------------------|

    B--3-----------------------|--------------------------|

    G--------------2--3----/5--|--------------------------|

    D--3-----------3--5----/7--|--------------------------|

    A--------------------------|--------------------------|

    E--------------------------|--------------------------|

    7..+.....+.....+.....+.....8..+.....+.....+.....+......

    e-----3-----------6--------|-----8--------------------|

    B--------------------------|--------------------------|

    G-/3----------/7-----------|-/9-----------------------|

    D--------------------------|--------------------------|

    A--------------------------|--------------------------|

    E--------------------------|--------------------------|

I say suspiciously because I'm doing this from memory. I wrote this stuff out at home and then totally forgot to bring it to work, so I might have to make a few corrections tomorrow. I seem to remember that something is going on in bar 6, but I listened to a crappy version of the song on youtube and I can't hear anything there, so I was probably drunk. Finally, the notes in bar 8 are barely perceptible, too, but I'm pretty sure I remember them. At least they're part of the chord and won't sound obviously wrong.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you were really thinking of another part.

  7. Glad you guys had a good jam. On the meeting wizard Sat. morn. is tough for me . . . there is a Sunday afternoon in Baracktober where 5 people are available (including yours truly) . . . I know not everyone can make each day (being left out on this first jam).

Yeah, I'm sorry we couldn't get everyone in there this time. Two people couldn't show at the last minute (missed you guys) so we would have had 7 people on Saturday. Sundays worked for me, but we wouldn't have had a drummer or bass. It's all a balancing act.

I teach later on Tues. Thu and Fri so any of you can come to that particular music school and play Wilco Tunes, so thats Tues. Thu. or Fri after 8pm in the South Bay. We've got a drum kit 3 acoustic pianos small PA, bass amp. and a few very small guitar pratice amps. The Sun. afternoon time on the meeting wizard is pretty much open for me as well.

Hey, if you want to host a Wilco Jam at your place, I'll show up. Traffic is so awful these days that driving to the South Bay on a weeknight is kinda rough, but I could swing it if I had enough notice.

  8. So how many people made it? Any pictures? Funny stories? Glad everyone had fun!

You know, I had a camera in my bag and I totally forgot to use it. There was also the capability to record the whole thing on CD-R, but we didn't do that either. So, basically, there is virtually no documentation that the jam ever took place. Anyway, at its height, there were 5 people there including a drummer and a violinist (who kind of showed us all up by nailing the parts to Jesus Etc.) and three guitarists (who switched off between acoustic, electric, bass, and keyboards). Andy and Marko handled the vocals, and because of them, we were able to tell where the hell we were in the song; so I really have to thank them!

I think we played every song on our list, with the exception of Summerteeth and Theologians (some combination of them being too hard to wing and us running out of time).

I think the best part was that I got to meet some fellow viachicago-ers and they were great musicians and great people, too.

  9. Hey -- Big thanks to James for pulling this thing together and to those of you that could make it. I had a blast!

Hey thanks Andy! I'm glad you had a good time. I certainly did, too. Indeed, thanks to everyone who showed up and jammed! It was a pretty rad gig. I hope we can do it again sometime.

    :cheers

  10. I'm starting to come down with something....hopefully just a cold because I would be bummed as hell to miss this, but also driving two hours and not wanting to subject all you fine folks to it need to be taken into account. Pumping the meds so hopefully I'll be good to go.

I hope you feel better (I'll be bummed as hell, too, if you can't make it). The room we got is pretty big so you can stake out a corner and not worry about infecting us. Anyway, we got the room for a while, so you can sleep in and show up a little late.

As is viachicago tradition, I'm sending out some wellness vibes. :pray

  11. I am curious if anyone has any thoughts on the Parker P-36. Awhile ago I purchased a Peavey Generation EXP on the cheap but never got into it but I am interested in finding a nice guitar with ACM.

I have no experience with this guitar, but it's come up a few times on tdpri.com

You can find more if you search for parker or p-36.

    I hope this helps.

  12. All the Rage by Elvis Costello holds a special place in my heart:

The twitching impulses to speak your mind

I'll lend you my microscope and maybe you will find it

Is it in that ugly place that's just behind your face

Where you keep my picture still despite the fact that you had me replaced?

    Say "Goodbye"

Baby can't you act your age?

    You know why

I'm going to give it to you straight

    Although I'll never be

Unhappy as you want me to be

    Still it's all the rage

    I'll probably play along

    Left to my own devices

Spare me the drone of your advice

The sins of garter and gin

    Confession may delay

    You know the measuring pole

    The merry boots of clay

    I've heard it all before

    You'll say it anyway

Alone with your tweezers and your handkerchief

You murder time and truth, love, laughter and belief

So don't try to touch my heart, it's darker than you think

And don't try to read my mind because it's full of disappearing ink

  13. my fav show too

love Jays guitar, very soulful sounding

Me too. It's interesting, this show has to be one of my favorites, and is one of the favorites of a lot of people on here it seems, but I got the show from a music blog (who shall remain nameless -- unless some one asks) that posted it to say how awful the show was because Jay overplayed and was generally kind of a jerk and didn't get the songs and no one seemed like they were having any fun. The blog contrasted the show with another at the Fillmore SF during the Being There tour where everyone seemed to be having a good time and Jay was more in his element.

I think the Grant Park show had a sloppy, rollicking feel that can either energize you or totally annoy the hell out of you. I think I'm electrified whenever I hear any part of it.

  14. Looks like musician's friend has a scratch and dent sale going on for the 5W model. Don't know much about Blackhearts, though. If you're looking for a 5W amp, though, and if you have a little more cash, may I recommend the Swart Space Tone?:

    http://www.swartamps.com/amplifiers_tweed_tone_6v6se.htm

Matt Costa's guitarist was using one of those when I saw him at an in-store at a record store in Long Beach. Awesome tone (it also helped that he's an awesome guitarist). He had a bunch of really great boutique items including a Fulltone Tape Echo, which also sounded amazing, and a custom shop tele . I think a couple of weeks later all his gear was stolen -- a real shame.

  15. Okay, we are booked for Amp Rehearsal Studio in North Hollywood on Saturday, October 4th. I'll be there at 10, but we'll have the room for several hours, so show up when you can. The drummer will be there at 11.

    Amp Rehearsal Studio

    5259 Lankershim Blvd

    North Hollywood, CA 91601

Located north of the 134 and east of the 170 in the San Fernando Valley.

We'll be in Studio 5, which is downstairs. We should have a bass amp, keyboard amp, a Fender Twin Reverb, and a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe if you want to leave your amps at home.

So we've got a setlist and a place to rock-out; I think we're ready to jam!
