  1. Just MO:

CDs are certainly dying / soon to be dead.

the Good: MP3s provide a very portable way to transfer music (itunes / ipod). This ability of transfer allows many musicians and bands to distribute their music to a broad audience with very low cost. Distribution channels are now open to the small guy that were never there before. As an independent / semi-professional musician, I find this to be phenomenal.

MP3s are easily shared. Anyone who has been in a cover band and learned a song knows the merit of emailing a mp3 to all the band mates.

No longer is the consumer forced to purchase an entire album for one song.

iPods are awesome. Carrying that 50lb book of CDs in my car was a joke.

the Bad: MP3s sound lousy compared to CDs. Uncompressed audio has far more "texture" and depth than an MP3 does. This could spark a whole different debate, but anyone who has worked with / manipulated (digital) music recordings can vouch that this is a large drawback for the mp3. However, I think this is a moot point, as 99% of music listeners have no idea there is any difference.

Illegally downloading music is sickeningly easy. I see no end in sight for this.

People stop buying CDs. Record stores aren't necessary. Record store employees lose jobs. The flip side of this is that somewhere, someone is saving money by not sinking capital into physical inventory.

    _______

In ten years, I think most disk-based media will be a thing of the past. We've seen it happen with music. Movies will be next...or are almost there. I see blu-ray technology becoming antiquated before being mass-adopted.

    Anyway...IMO.

  2. Because even though they're in the past, they're in their own present. It's like what Miles was trying to explain to Hurley when he told Hurley to shoot him. If Hurley did shoot him, Miles would die because they are in their present. Desmond had a memory of Daniel telling him to find his mother because Desmond is "special".

Also, Jack was never going to save Ben, nor was Juliet. Because what happened was that Kate & Sawyer brought him to the Others, and that's what always happened.

I hope that makes some sense...

    Very good explanation. I agree.

Anyone think the lady in the grocery store, who took Aaron, was a mid-fifties Claire?

  3. I know we've set some "rules" for time travel, but I still have to believe that if someone dies (young ben), they simply won't be alive in the future.

Like the fading photographs in Back to the Future....

On another note, I'm definitely waiting for the moment where Jack shows his doctor skills.

  4. Do you have another pair of speakers you could try? Maybe go out and get some of the cheapest ones you can find, for like $10, and hook those up. If the popping is there still, then the problem resides in the sound card. If not -- it's likely the speakers.

I'll be you just have a short in the volume control.

  5. Does your Martin do the same? I am not complaining at all about this guitar, the sound makes most everything else sound like a toy, but the low end is so intense! So, bright bonze? DiAddario brand for that as well?

I think part of the problem is that I do not use a pick. I do everything fingerstyle, and those high end strings on the heavy Phosphur Bronze are pretty thick.

I always use Elixir Lights on it. It's an all mahogany guitar, so I figured the brighter the better.

  6. You will (likely) need two power amps. One of the amps will drive the mains, the other will drive the monitors.

I highly suggest looking at the used market. I have had good experiences with Crown and QSC. You can get far-better quality gear for your money when going used -- especially since it's live sound -- who cares if the PA has a scratch, right?

How is the wattage split? 200w per speaker? Do the mains need more power than the monitors?

Here's how I envision your setup:

Microphones, etc. -->Mixer --> Power Amp --> Main Speakers

then, take your Monitor Sends / Aux Outs from the Mixer --> 2nd Power Amp --> Monitors

Keep in mind that you don't want to go over the specified wattage for each speaker.

I wouldn't necessarily worry about spending the extra dough putting a rack together. You could make something really simple out of wood that could house two power amps and the mixer. Keep in mind that power amps are pretty damn heavy.

I would love to help out more. How about some specifics on the speakers (maybe a model # or picture)? What size gigs are you gonna play with this rig?

I have a fair amount of experience in this field and welcome whatever questions you might have.

  7. This section of the board has been so helpful, I thought I may exploit it further.

I am self-taught, been playing for only 3/4 years, and really only have the deutchebanks at Guitar Center for advice :stunned

Sooo... I bought myself a Martin HD-28 for Christmas, and have been using Martin's Phospur Bronze Heavy gauge strings. They sound great, BUT, the bass on them (and the Martin) is so unbelievable, that with many Wilco/Tweedy songs (drop D, etc.) the low end just swallows up the rest of the higher strings at times.

Any recommendations on strings that would be IDEAL for Tweedy/WIlco songs on this type of guitar. I don't mind spending a couple extra bucks for the right fit.

Thanks in advance. You guys rock!

I use D'Addario Phosphor Bronze Light on a Gibson J-45 and really get that "Tweedy" sound. However, I have a Martin that sounds much better with Bright Bronze strings. If you feel that the high notes on your guitar aren't quite there, you might try a brighter string.

  8. Why do you come to VC regularly?

Good advice on many, many things.

What do you get out of coming here?

I find a welcoming community that has wonderful taste for many cool things that I may or may not already know of / about.

How did you get into VC?

I can't remember. I'm sure it was Wilco-related -- likely a google search of some kind.

Do you consider yourself a Wilco fan, even if you hate AM/SBS/BT/MA/MA2/whichever album blew chunks?

At the top of the list, I would never be here without Wilco. They are a great band, and even if I don't like what they do (from here forward), they have already given sooo much awesome music. I will always be a Wilco fan.

How would you define being a Wilco fan?

Someone who enjoys the band's music.

If your interest in Wilco has waned, why do you still come around?

As a band, Wilco, and their fans still "get it" in my eyes.

Is there another internet community you spend more time at, and what kind of forum is it (music, sports, political)?

Many, many "technical" music forums / guitar forums.

Do you consider some fellow VCers friends?

Yes, but have met very few in real life

Do you consider a few VCers you've never met to be friends?

There are a few people, which I feel if we met in real life, would be instant good friends.

What did you find at VC that you haven't found at other internet communities, that made you want to stick around?

    The Wilco.

Is there something about YOU that you think makes you inclined to being active on a message board, that people who don't belong to internet communities lack?

The ability to express their feelings / ideas / thoughts through the written language -- seriously some people have no idea.

And if you DON'T come to VC regularly, how often do you visit and why do you visit?

    Daily. Couple times.

  9. Right LaFleur-Sawyer would have the memories of 2004 Sawyer, but 2004 Sawyer would not have the memories of LaFleur Sawyer. Similarly, 1970s little Ben would not have the memories of of 2004 Ben. BUT is 2004 Ben on the other island in the 1970s about to get a memory of LaFleur in the same way Demond's memory of Farraday suddenly popped into Desmond's head? THAT would be weird. LaFleur meets young Ben and older Ben, now on the small time plane (for lack of a better word) as young Ben, suddenly now remembers meeting the Losties in the 1970s.

I can almost be sure that this, or something, similar will happen......
