  1. Before you put me down for buying MiM, it plays REALLY well, and maybe I'm just not a big enough guitar buff, but I can't tell if there's much of a difference between this one and American ones I've played.

No negative thoughts from me about MIM Fenders. They are awesome instruments -- really no difference than the American ones.

  2. A cool way to make noise I've used a couple times in recording -- I open tune a guitar or bass to the major chord that they key of the song is in. So if the song is in C, I tune the guitar to open C...etc. Anyway, you can lay the guitar on the ground and sort of hammer on the body with both fists (pinky side) and get some really odd swells and cool sounds.

  3. a.miller, what year/model of jazzmaster do you have?

I have a 2007 (I think -- got it for xmas) 1962 American Vintage Reissue. It is this one. Really, the more I play it the more I like it. I can get some strat tones out of it, but it seems to be a "softer" sounding guitar. A lot of strats sound too metallic to my ears. The Jazzmaster sounds good, but I think it could sound even better. Let me know how those pickups treat you. What model is yours?

  4. I've been thinking about changing my stock jazzy's pickups for Jason Lollars. The bridge pick up in particular to me just sounds sort of weak and twangy. Thoughts?

I've been considering doing the same thing -- Lollars or Curtis Novak. I've heard that the pickups in the AVRI Fenders are supposed to be pretty good. However, I am kind of a believer that most stock pickups -- especially on Fenders, are kinda crappy.

  5. Hey folks --

Just wondering if anyone knows any places that have a good price and quality on getting some CDs made. Not a huge run, maybe 100 - 500. I would want the actual disks printed and the jacket, etc. I'm open to any suggestions and experiences. Basically, I don't want to get an album pressed and have it come in the mail looking like shit.

  6. Not really, you should see the work required to make an archtop..............holy shit.

It's actually carved in a lot of cases, right? That would be a little much. The fact that you're making everything from scratch is a really cool thing. Those numb fingers will be all worth it once they're strumming those strings.

How do you hook the neck on with an acoustic? I've been wanting to make a les paul or sg, but the thought of doing a set neck scares me.

  7. I'm not certain, but I think my strat has three springs. I think Clapton does the 5 spring thing on his strats. That sounds like a simple, easily reversible option. Is there a good source for getting the exact springs I'd need?

I would think any guitar shop would have these items. They're really common, and pretty cheap too (:)). you could always order them from allparts.com.

  8. 14 Fret OM/OOO....................More on the process later.

That is awesome. Building an acoustic guitar = the true test.

  9. Hey there --

I moved to the LA area back in February. Life moves pretty fast out here, IMO. Lots of cool things to do. I lived in the heart of hollywood for the last four months and just recently moved into a house in North Hollywood. Life in the valley definitely isn't as cool as some other places.

Lookout on those gas prices....I'm seeing lots of $4.50/gal.

Checkout Santa Monica and Venice. Take a trip down to Palos Verdes.

  10. Hey there --

You have two choices if you want to apply a clearcoat to your guitar. One, is a nitrocellulose laquer and the other is polyurethane. I have found that for "sealing" things, a spray polyurethane works pretty well. Nitrocellulose laquers have more solvents in them, which might dissolve the ink in the signatures. I've sprayed the poly on magazine photos before and had good results. Just do a bunch of misted coats to build up your desired protective layer.

Additionally, I would take off all the hardware on your guitar so that your can a smooth seam with the spray. Be sure to mask off the neck/fingerboard also, so you don't get any unwanted spray.

As far as pickups go, I think Gibson 57 Classics sound awesome. I have two guitars with this pickup and they sound super.

  11. Or is it just about some people who can maybe sing - and if so, sing other people's songs, and still yet - may go on to make an album where all they do is sing songs written for them while using tools such as Auto-Tune and the like. Interesting - we have had this debate before, I think.

Yes. And, in my opinion, the record industry need look no further that this shitty process to answer for their dwindling sales numbers.
