  1. will someone help me out here (because I just don't care enough or have the time to research it myself): did the judge in Polanski's case simply not accept the plea bargain or did he accept it and then change his mind? there is a significant difference between the two.
  2. yes, but how would you get the Hendrix trademark sound without a "Voodoo Child" amplifier and a Foxey Fuzz pedal?
  3. in my opinion he's really not. my experience with Stewart is that he enjoys finding hypocrisy, absurdity and senselessness on both sides of the aisle (granted he has a left bent) and turning same into comedy. Savage gets pretty apocalyptic at times, and seems to thrive on dissonance with callers. I personally can't listen to the guy. one negative, gloom & doom rant after another with him. I do tend to believe that his sensationalism is in part for show and ratings though. unlike some posters, though, it doesn't bother me one bit if you want to enjoy him. edit: and letterman sadly
  4. now I'm sorry I asked. I guess I thought for sure there must be something to this story for it to have been such a big damn deal. he is a muslim communist, though, right?
  5. I missed the whole birth certificate uproar when I was in the hospital. could someone give me the reader's digest on this? (maybe I'm missing the point, but why wouldn't the president just disclose his birth certificate and shut these people up? or did he already?)
  6. your persistent insistence on making sense really does very little to flame up these threads you know...
  7. I've been listening to that tune over and over (old version cds) the past week or so and was wondering as well if they kicked it up a notch on the new ones.
  8. I've heard a lot of elizabeths, jennies and stacies. not nearly enough maudes or oprahs.
  9. fair point. to be clear then: I think that Serena Williams acted immaturely and brat-like. I also don't think a monetary fine will change that one bit, but I will give her the benefit of the doubt.
  10. I tend to think of name-calling as using a word or phrase with the primary intent of being hurtful or insulting. I used "immature" and "brat" precisely because of what they both describe. If, for example, I had simply called serena williams a bitch, I would have been doing so mainly to insult her, not to describe her as a female dog. she was losing. she was down 15-30 in a game in a set in which she was down 5-6. she received a judgment she didn't like. a champion worthy of praise would funnel that anger or frustration or whatever into handing over some great serves, coming back in the
  11. I thought the way most posters banded together to dump on the new wilco album showed a sense of community.
  12. I liked the way michael jordan stuck out his tongue. did he mention that in the speech?
  13. have you read any editorials reviewing the call or know the history of the tennis?
  14. and in my opinion should be suspended, not fined, for the comment to the line judge
  15. not paying taxes is a crime. not putting money into a particular mutual fund or stock is a legal choice.
  16. I had a couple of thoughts about it this morning on the way to court. one of them was a realization that it may not be the best day to be in a giant courthouse, which I eventually dismissed on the theory that living in fear is worthless and a waste of energy. the next one was a memory of the kindness that people seemed to show one another in the days and weeks following the event, which has disappeared entirely. I saw a moving scene on the way downtown of a circle of about 6 people in apparent memorial. very touching.
