  1. good pun... Isn't it sad (not directed at you anodyne) that we think about presidential potentials in terms of recognition and popularity rather than capacity for successful governing? I mean, what qualifications (other than megalomania and a talent for attracting admirers) does Oprah have to be president?
  2. I think the jury is out on the cancer thing So should we not discuss the merits of anyone on television, since we could just change the channel? Would that apply to music as well--why bother criticizing an album, artist or performance, since one could simply choose to listen or not?
  3. I think her show has probably helped some people, but come on, this is an individual who created a magazine that features her, and her only, on the cover every freaking month. She'd need a camera crew to give a dollar to a homeless person at a street corner...
  4. I think what we should ALL be asking ourselves when pondering these serious issues is: "what would Orpah do?" Isn't that really what matters most?
  5. okay. Last week the wife and I watched this rockstar supernova deal with Tommy Lee, Gilby What'sHisFace (I just visited the website, and I shit you not it says "Three rock legends have joined forces to become Supernova" Legends?) and Jason Newsted, where a group of "rockers" audition each week to be the band's lead singer, with the attendant reality show eliminations etc. etc. (same thing as that INXS show last year basically). There's plenty to be critical about as far as the content of the show goes (God help Dave Navarro), but I was wondering if perhaps it shouldn't get at least a littl
  6. wow. that's shocking. were they all female teacher-male student?
  7. if he was playing solo acoustic then I bet he was switching from dry signal to that damn fuzz factory. the first time I saw/heard/felt-in-my-ribcage that, it was startling. He also used to use the zvex looper (can't think of the name of it right now), which was pretty impressive...
  8. or control (same thing?). I would think a bruised ego/self-esteem/bad past experiences, etc. could make some dysfunctional relationship like that attractive--in the sense that the giver of sex would be able to run the show. and not have the risk of rejection/hurt inherent in relationships with men their own age. wait a minute. something about the "giver of sex running the show" thing is sounding too familiar in there.
  9. true. maybe my problem is one of verbage, with the "statutory rape" concept--that it shares the word "rape." When I think of the term rape, I think violence and lack of consent. Of course the legal argument is that a minor is incapable of consent, which is a fair point. I guess I just think there should be a distinction between forced sex acts and consensual--albeit emotionally harmful, etc--sex.
  10. I guess that's why it frightens me a little that these 20- and 30-something women are getting the same label as the male rapist who brutally attacks an unsuspecting victim and does serious physical and emotional damage...
  11. Very good point. I am always baffled by talented pedal steel players. I saw a guy play with Gary P. Nunn a few months back--I realized about an hour later that I was standing in the same place with the same warm beer I had started the show with. Takes all four limbs and a whole lot of feel...
  12. I was just making a cheap-shot stereotype joke (the best kind)... For me at least, at 13 I had no true understanding of the unbearably cruel (to women and men) ways of female hormones. Not that I had any true understanding of them as an adult either, I just learned to adapt to the symptoms--that is until Tom Cruise came along and explained to me that women don't have hormonal imbalances. Thanks, Tom! probably because boys and girls are different in some ways. *ducks and runs* Absolutely they would. This was addressed by the scientists at Orpah as well. The "double stan
  13. does that entail bad acting, excessive trilling and busting out of your clothes?
  14. I'm impressed any time I see a teenage boy out of his house. I mean, hell, it was hard enough dealing with hormones as a teenage boy, BEFORE the internet. But now? I don't know how they do it. Maybe these teachers are simply serving as a much needed outlet, or inlet, as the case may be. There's no question that a teenage boy isn't equipped emotionally or mentally for the potential repercussions of a sexual relationship with an older woman (you think the sex component is traumatizing? think about being 13 and dealing with aunt flo's visits--these young men probably haven't encounter
  15. I was laughing at loper's post: Mayor Nagin! Mayor Nagin is here from New Orleans, the chocolate city! Yeah, give it up. Mayor Nagin, I'd like to welcome you to Washington, D.C., the chocolate city with a marshmallow center. And a graham cracker crust of corruption. It's a Mallomar, I guess is what I'm describing, a seasonal cookie.
  16. has oprah ever done anything without a camera crew in tow?
  17. wouldn't it be ironic, based on all of Tweedy's jokes about downloading, if wilco's new cd looked exactly like that (burned cd with "wilco" etc. written with a sharpie)?
  18. now bjorn, you're being insensitive--these boys are SCARRED FOR LIFE. They have horrible recurring memories of boobs and privates and premature ejaculation.
  19. I'm surprised that you have time to fit in a wilco show, what with your fixing the Katrina aftermath, ripping Parker and Stone, "recording the human face" of the Iraqi people, punching reporters, praying in Iran and comparing weeping vaginas with Cindy Sheehan... how DO you fit it all in???
  20. Earlier this week the wife and I were at home, erm, cause we were "sick" and therefore unable to go to work *coughs "hangover"* and while flipping channels in the afternoon we came across the almighty Orpah (yes, I know, that's just the way I like to refer to her). She was doing a show on the rash of incidents of adolescent boys being molested (raped, as many on the show categorized it) by older female teachers, and how it has scarred said boys for life. So, do you guys equate a 14 year old having sex with a 20-something female multiple times over a 3 month period with a man raping a w
  21. I'm going to buy that kid a present. What in the hell do 14 year olds like these days? (excluding sex with their older, blonde teachers--I can't deliver that from Texas)
