as horrible as the events of 9/11 were, it sure was nice, for a little while, to look around and feel like we were all united not only against a common enemy, but together as a country. Only time I've ever felt like that, in my 34 years in the U.S. When did we all decide to go back to picking sides and laying blame?

My wife and I watched the first half last night. We were both sort of curious as to what could be in there to stir up such a response from the Clinton camp. While certain parts were obviously cram-packed consolidations of events or information, I found it interesting to be reminded of many of the events of the 90s. I'm sure we'll watch part II this evening. As to the other posts, everyone has his or her own way of grieving and/or remembering this part of our collective past. Why judge them for it, if it is what works for them? Peace, Neil

It kind of begs the question, though, of whether any leader, from any party, could keep that kind of unity going for an extended period of time, in the context of the dog-eat-dog political two-party climate (power struggle). I agree with you that Bush dropped the ball on that account. I just wonder how long members of one party (not in power) would have continued to stay "united" with the leaders of the other party in power. Too cynical?

I've got a couple of ideas for these and am planning on trying to put a couple together tonight. Are there any real guidelines other than posted above? i.e. I just take the mp3s, put them in a zip file, upload it, then come back and post the track list and link? As to the zip part (I'm not well-versed in winzip & such)--are there any particular recommended settings as far as compression and all that jazz? thanks for any pointers... --Neil

story please?

That's an interesting point of view. You hear the cliched story of the girl who got raped who was wearing slutty clothes, out late drinking, etc. etc. and then the attendant firestorm of arguments of "she was asking for it" vs. "no one deserves to be raped." I think the same kind of logistical circle can come up when thinking about our role as Americans in getting attacked... In other words, could we have done better with our foreign policy? Could be less materialistic? Could we show other cultures more respect? etc. etc. Well, maybe, but that's still no justification for murdering innoc

I'm curious what your most overriding emotion tends to be when reflecting on 9/11... I definitely get sad/emotional/teary when thinking about all the senseless loss of it all, but by and large I find myself plain angry. Anyone else get this way?

just watched two Koln, Germany shows from 92 and 95 (thank you thank you thank you dimeadozen) last night and just got sad, thinking about this thread. what a great freakin' band in that narrow window.

I personally would like to be able to reflect on the event and what it felt like at the time--going through all the craziness, reactions and emotions--and not have to have it and all the political aftermath slanted, packaged and rammed down my throat by both sides of the political aisle. but then again I might as well wish for a late night jam session tonight with Jeff and Co. in my living room...

this chart shows the adjusted price from 1946 to June 2006 (you have to click on the chart in the link) Oil Prices Bush took office in January of 2001 correct? It appears, at least from this chart (I'm certainly no petroleum analyst, so if this chart is a piece of crap, please provide a more accurate one--just the first one I came across) that in January of 2001, in adjusted dollars, the price of crude was in the mid-$30s. Crude today is at $66.70. I just thought the numbers seemed a little off... not trying to start a big thing. I need to add the disclaimer that I think Bush has b
