  1. I would tell people I was punched by Joseph Gordon Something.
  2. Promise and potential, but death mostly.
  3. I was hoping to quickly thumb through and find it but couldn't--there was a section where he mentioned a drum riff from a James Brown tune and a dispute between the drummer and Brown's camp on who really had the rights when it was sampled later. I'll try and find it later. There is a lot of interesting stuff in Byrne's book. I have thoroughly enjoyed it. everything from how the medium on which music has been recorded has affected what music is made, to chronology of musical technology, to chronology of intellectual property and recording issues. All kinds of good stuff. There is some stu
  4. I like the content of American Beauty. I am only saying--dictated solely by my personal taste--that I would most likely more enjoy how it sounds if it had been recorded, produced, mixed and mastered differently. With no sarcasm I tell you I'm very happy if others love the sound of grateful dead records. As I've mentioned, it's been ages since I've listened to them, so I can only offer my opinions as I go through them again.
  5. all I had time to listen to in the car on the way to lunch and back was American Beauty. It was a remastered version on Spotify. It seemed to have more low end than I remember on my copy. I think one of the things that bothers me with this album is the panning. It's just weird to hear the dead with a sort of Beatles-esque panning situation. And Jerry's electric guitar parts just sound flat and tinny to me, tone-wise. it just feels like the producer and engineer were trying to record the Dead as if they were some other band. Hard to articulate. But this re-master is sonically clearer.
  6. thanks to Spotify I think I just found an Althea I didn't already have. sweet.
  7. I came here to do one thing.
  8. I sold all my dead studio CDs years ago except American Beauty and Workingman's Dead but I'll try and find them on the interwebs and report back later. Once I heard some clear recordings of Jerry's live rig it ruined most studio recordings for me (except, again, that album with Touch of Makes Everyone Angry).
  9. Jerry's guitars are never recorded properly.
  10. the show that ended up being the Live at the El Mocambo DVD was recorded July 11, 1983. The Texas Flood album was recorded Thanksgiving '82. It's amazing to watch his playing on El Mocambo and then listen to those flat tunes on the album. Such a shame.
  11. not at all. this thread is about politics in 2014.
  12. The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to post nothing.
  13. in fairness to my brain, I think I was thinking of something else when I made the comment about Pavement. I can't really remember. My humidifier has not been working for shit. But Slanted & Enchanted kind of sounds like crap. Good songs, lousy recording. I am glad that y'all enjoy it so much regardless.
  14. I don't need pics. I've met Mrs. Jules. Perv.
  15. I don't speak for the other haters, but I'd like the good songs to sound gooder.
  16. Is that Obama still President? I'm concerned that the government might be spending more money than it takes in. My healthcare seems to have gotten more expensive. and how about that abortion?!
  17. I've heard nothing but good things about that box.
  18. It's ok. I just want to make sure that people truly needing help don't shy away from the thread when they come here and think it's about negotiating football contracts.
