  1. Wow, I've never seen so many posts before on VC regarding being clean or sobriety or quoting one of the 12 steps . . .

I had heard of a group of clean Gratefull Dead fans who used to meet up at concerts and wondered if this has ever happened or could it happen at Wilco shows . . .

the other thing is the Musicians Picnic is on this Sun in So. Cal (Chatsworth) with Wayne Crammer of MC5 (Doug Lunn on bass), English Beat and others . . . anyway, thats been a great event over the last 1/4 century, pretty much one of the largest clean and sober gatherings . . .

. . . just dreamin i guess, ya know, Wilcos on break, Nels lives in LA, Tweedys being of service comments on the Sunken Treasure DVD, . . . If the event is good enough for Clapton, Dr. John, Bonnie Raitt, Crosby, Ivan Neville, etc. maybe Wilco would play it some year . . .

    (12 years clean this month . . )

    Beautiful! Congratulations Chuck! (Hug)

  2. Your best chance at Zingerman's is if you arrive while the game's still going on. Downtown Ann Arbor experiences a lull during home games, but before and after it's completely overrun with maize-and-blue-clad morons. Hopefully you'll be able to park within a half mile of Z's. If you run into too much of a crowd at Zingerman's, there are several other good places downtown, closer to the venue, that aren't as popular with the MABCMs.

Wendy's probably going to call me when people are preparing to gather, and I might come on down and join the crowd.

If it's Zingerman's, you might want to order your sandwich with the mustard on the side ... the kitchen staff has developed a bad habit of trowling on so much mustard that you can't taste any of the other ingredients of your sandwich. That's happened to me the last four or five times I've been there, and I think I've finally learned my lesson. It's a pity, because those sandwiches are amazing when properly made, but I just don't trust those kids any more.

Yeah, I was just there Thursday evening and, come to think of it, my corned beef was having trouble keeping its head above the mustard. Wannabe-hippie kids. Sheeeesh!

  3. I was at the Fri and Sat Tiger/Mariner games.

We looked good. Timo Perez was hitting like Tony Perez. Granderson played like baseball's next superstar. I thought, if he stays a Tiger for his career, he will become this generations Al Kaline, Alan Trammel . . .

Then Bonderman goes out and gets crushed and lost for the remainder of the year. Injuries have killed us this year. Momentum has been impossible to generate since the all-star break.

Sadly, I agree that the Yankees appear to have th wild card, even though their pitching is terrible.

I look for a great championship series between the Red Sox and Angels.

NL - I have no clue what will happen.

This is the best sports time of year. Baseball pennant races!!!

  4. Seen both within the last 6 months.

Bright Eyes with the large band and Gillian Welch and David Rawlings as opener. Highlight of that show was Gillian and David joining Conor and then the whole band for a couple of tunes. The Bright Eyes set was average, unless you're a 16 year-old girl, most of whom were unable to contain themselves (actually, that was pretty entertaining).

Ryan Adams and the Cardinals was an excellent show. Most of the set was from ET, CR, JCN, 29 and LIH. One of the tightest, well-performed shows I've seen.

I think you made the right choice.

  5. Although I have no formal training in conditions requiring treatment with SSRIs, I do have personal and job-related experience that is relevant.

Without going into great detail, I have come to believe that our society and, more specifically, the medical community, overtreats with medication. I don't believe that a treatment which merely masks the underlying problem and creates a false sense of well-being is appropriate or beneficial. In many cases where a suffering person is prescribed SSRIs, the depression is caused by errant self-perception or an inablility to respond to people, places and things in a healthy way. Medication does not address those behaviors, it only masks the sadness. I don't believe they offer a solution and urge anyone considering their use to first try a more natural approach to the problem.

Obviously, people suffering from bi-polar disorder or schizophrenia will benefit from medication; but, outside those diagnoses, I think there are healthier responses to depression.
