  1. http://enjoyment.independent.co.uk/books/r...icle1769750.ece Here's a review of his new book "The Lay Of The Land." It's the third in a trilogy about Frank Bascome. I've actually only read the second in the trilogy, the Pulitzer-winner, Independence Day. This new one is getting great reviews, though. Anyone else excited about this? His short stories are great too. Rock Springs is an excellent collection. It's almost as if a permanent darkness of futility and ache hangs over all of his characters, yet it's somehow uplifting. Great writer.
  2. My guess is that this is not the predictable right-wing response because it's the only thing on which they can criticize him; rather, I believe right-wingers just like to periodically envision Clinton in the nude. But don't stop believin,' dude. Maybe someday you'll get to give a blowjob. True, true.
  3. Sigh. At least the article isn't titled "Bush Says Everything Fine" and then the writers spend the first half reiterating Bush's bogus statements before revealing the truth about the findings.
  4. I definitely think that news outlets like Fox are willing to over-emphasize minor issues to distract viewers from bad news on the right. Fox also has a tendency to focus on a lot of non-news, which gives them a much narrower window for actual news, as well. I'd guess that it's just more like an unwritten accepted role as a right-wing propaganda machine, vs. a conspiracy, though. They're happy to divert the attention from issues like the ones you cited, but they're probably doing it (mostly?) on their own volition. I find it pretty ridiculous, though, that the Fox chief would call the Clinton
  5. I'll have to check out that website tonight. My employer blocks MySpace and I don't have sound on my computer.
  6. No, actually there were no horns. Just Bobby, a guitarist, keyboardist/mandolinist, and drummer.
  7. Fortunately, I got a copy before the show, too, so I got to hear the new songs. (I already had "From The End Of Your Leash.") Anyway- the new BBJ CD is awesome, for sure.
  8. I'll probably get killed for this, but I gotta say I just don't see the appeal of DBT. They're alright, but I didn't find them to be super-amazing. Maybe liking Lynyrd Skynyrd is a prerequisite that disqualifies me. I do not wish to imply that I thought they sucked, either. They are obviously skilled. I can also respect DBT because they seem to have a loyal and energetic following, especially among the mid to late-thirties crowd. Anyway- Bobby Bare, Jr. was great, though. I'd like to see him again sometime. Well worth the $15. (And I did go without earplugs, and yes, my ears are still rin
  9. In that sense, sure (although it's good that I wish to be cremated because my family would probably do it anyway). Seems to me, though, that there should be a degree of reason associated with the decision. Cremation vs. burial is an issue with which everyone has to cope. Showing footage of a grisly death on television, though, is a little more complicated, methinks.
  10. So- if he was accidentally disemboweled or cut in half, it should still be up to the TV stations- not the family- to decide whether it's made publicly available? What if he was mauled by a grizzly bear?
  11. There's no mandatory rule that says you have to follow the dead guy's wishes. I think that following the wishes is more for the family's sake, less for the dead guy's. If the family's not up to it, they're under no obligation.
  12. Poor spelling and copy editing is much worse than anything Adams has ever done.
  13. I can see where you're coming from. But hey, at least we both really like Ted Leo.
  14. Yeah, exactly. I find it pretty gross that this kind of thing makes it onto the airwaves all the time, even more frequently (but lest sensationalized) when it's not a celebrity. Also- From what I understand, the Enquirer photos are reproductions showing what it "would've looked like."
  15. I'm struggling...my list is pretty unbalanced toward more recent years, and although I might not say that these are the definitive top 10, I'd say that each has at least one masterpiece album. Alphabetical: Sam Beam Isaac Brock Vic Chesnutt Ted Leo Jeff Mangum Tim Rutili Elliott Smith Jeff Tweedy Lucinda Williams Thom Yorke
  16. It was? That's really weird. I also remember recently seeing replay after replay of teenagers beating (and murdering) a homeless man, and I know that it all just boiled down to sensationalism. Gross.
  17. I don't want to see it at all. I have no morbid curiosity for that kind of thing (I'm remembering how people were so into watching Iraq beheadings on the Internets). I meant to be sarcastic. I think that TV and media people are assholes for even thinking about the possibility airing it (or anything like it).
  18. http://www.dnaindia.com/report.asp?NewsID=1055466 Maybe they posed the question like this: Seriously, though. What the hell? TV people are assholes. Did anyone think for a minute that she'd be unopposed to showing the footage? Christ! This has to win most obvious headline of the day. Or- Methinks the lady dost protest too much?
  19. Richard does play the song live a lot- and he sings the lead. Maybe that's where you got confused.

  21. I also like how Wallace claimed to be "surprised" by the volume of emails with that particular question.
