  1. I had some hard times last year and I had to sell some of my more expensive vinyl. I went through and tried to guess what was likely to be reissued soon. My vinyl copy of Mermaid was one that figured into this calculation, and I was able to sell it for $120 on amazon!

A week later I bought a single copy from the bragg store when it was revealed they had some.

Luckily almost everything I sold then is slated to be reissued or has already been reissued. With mermaid, I definitely felt like those popping up at the bragg store was some good karma or cosmic wishes for my wilco collection to stay complete!

  2. Actually I did about 4 times. So a 120 with the same amount of music time wise can/could sound just as good as a 180, it would just undermine marketing of the thick platter.

Sorry if I sounded snappy, I didnt mean too!

Yep. I have some great sounding thin records, but that is hard to explain on a sticker on the cover.

180 gram records do feel higher in quality because they are thicker, and some people say they warp less. Records were closer to 180g earlier, and during the oil embargo in the 70s got substantially thinner. records from the late 70s and 80s are super thin, and if you have mostly 50s and 60s vinyl, it would be better to set your turntable up for the thicker ones, and therefore 180g records would sound better than thin ones.

I think it is mostly because the thickness makes people feel that it is a higher quality product.

I buy all new music on vinyl and I rarely buy reissues, unless the original is rare enough I will be unlikely to ever run into it at a local store, or if the original is substantially more expensive than a reissue. I try to research the new records I buy to determine the source used and/or who mastered and pressed it. Often times if a record is offered in 140 and 180, I will buy the 140.

  3. ummm 180g has nothing to do with the length of music an album can hold, length has to do with the volume of the music and the amount of bass.

180g refers to the weight of the vinyl used to make the disc. They range from about 110g to over 200g

    Did you read my post?

  4. I would say the main way is I get basically hit over the head with an idea at a completely random time, and then the song usually follows quickly thereafter. I record it either into my phone or a little portable recorder I carry around, and that is it. Maybe I revise a little, but I usually do 90% of it when I get the idea.

I have an increasingly large cache of ideas that I didnt finish, so for instance a great chorus or some lines that could make a good verse. Occasionally I will get a new hit over the head moment and in that moment realize I can steal a few from the cache + what I just had delivered and that will equal a cool tune.

I have never been able to write on command, and in fact even thinking about it is a bad thing and could make me go months without writing.

  5. Sonic shoulder,

that isnt the way length works on a record.

Length is a function of the loudness of a record and the amount of bass. The usual quoted optimum length is 18 minutes per side, and when you get above that, the record has to get quieter. It becomes noticeable around 22 minutes, and nosedives after 25. I have a 30 minute per side Neil Young record (weld) that is at least 50% quieter than an average album. This is because of the way the grooves are cut, and it gets complicated, but you can google search if you want to know exactly how all this works.

The real indicator of quality vinyl pressing is the mastering and pressing. 180 g is just a marketing trick, and offers no real benefit other than being thicker.

Great mastering engineers and pressing plants make great records. I even have records made from CD masters at 16 bit 44khz that sound really good on my turntable. Most affordable CD players basically suck, and there are many killer vintage tables that can be had for cheap, and easily beat out average CD players, meaning even if you have a CD master LP when you compare the LP and the CD, the LP would be better. On better mastered material, the differences are freaking huge. Tom Petty's Mojo vinyl is sourced from 24 bit 192khz and it is one of my standout sounding LPs.

The pressing plant is where the pops and clicks and noise come from. If they dont heat the vinyl pellets up enough, or dont press it for long enough, or dont let it cool off enough, or get it too hot, there will be sound issues.

I have found that every record I have from Pallas, RTI, and URP sounds great. I know the names Chris Bellman, Bernie Grundman, Stan Ricker, and Kevin Gray because those engineer names pop up often on records that sound great.

As for old LPs, for a combination of the above reasons, they can often sound many times better than new produced 180 gram versions.

If your new 180g lp came from a CD master, had a shoddy pressing, and an engineer trying to learn the ropes, vs the original lp pressed in 1970 at a great plant, mastered by Robert Ludwig from the original master tapes, the original will kill it, hands down.

  6. I'm trying out the free version today. All I'm really hoping for is that it fills in some of the holes in overall content of my MOG subscription, which I prefer so far. The UI does feel a little half-finished. Are there really partial albums, though?

I've only found a handful of albums that were missing a track. Like 3 or 4 out of the few hundred I have searched for.

I started buying vinyl in high school about 10 years ago, and basically missed the whole digital thing. Ive never downloaded or used a streaming service. I signed up for spotify, and it has been really cool to use at work. I have been searching for things people have told me I would like, but I never forked out to try on vinyl.

So far Dinosaur Jr's Bug has shot to the top of my to buy list, followed by the raconteurs records, some sonic youth and a few other things.

I have had no bugs that some of you speak of, and it works really fast. I have an old fashioned cell phone, but will likely get one of those nuclear launch, astro control center fancy ones soon, and will probably get the subscription service to go with it.

  7. They have played florida for every tour since ive been a fan (a ghost is born tour, at tampa performing arts center 2005).

2005 - Tampa and orlando I believe (A ghost is born)

2006 - Jacksonville, Sunrise music fest in miami, Tallahassee (kicking Television)

    2007 - I don't think they played here

2008 - Jacksonville (Sky Blue Sky)

    2010 - Clearwater (WTA)

Have patience, they will be around eventually

I think I may be going on a road trip to the ryman...

New song sounds great, cant wait to put the LP on my turntable. So far wilco has put out 3 really good records, a great live disc, and 5 of my all time favorites, so I am guessing at the very minimum I will greatly enjoy it.

  8. I think a good bit of people saw them, but maybe didnt post anything. I havent posted about this until now, but I sent a link to at least ten people that watched them. I think it is kind of cool that they are gone now though, as it will now go down in wilcofandom legend as the afternoon of ten forty second fragments of three different songs with various portions of the mixes to each muted.

For those of you that didnt hear them, think impossible germany as interpreted by interstellar space beings on acid.

I went from having a mildly controllable level of distant excitement to a must hear this asap, holy crap, this is gonna be awesome level of excitement. those were some really cool sounds on there, but short enough clips that it didnt really spoil anything.

  9. has anyone compared the original sundazed pressing of YHF to the new RTI pressing?

I am wondering if there are any differences. The sundazed one is awesome, but RTI always presses great records.

Also, fyi sound exchange on nebraska in tampa has like 5 copies of the vinyl kicking television box set for 49.99

  10. When the tour began it wasnt even out that he was going to have a new record, and I didnt see an official announcement that said that was what was happening.

My tickets from clearwater have "Neil Young: Solo Acoustic" on them. It was not solo acoustic!

I think the real answer is because he can. In 2007, he played small theaters with similar prices, and they all sold out. He can sell 3k tickets for an average of $150 a seat or whatever, so he is doing that.

I am waiting for the living room tour

  11. We saw Greendale. Loved it and I see your point. Rather than charging over $500 incl. fees for the best seats, couldn't he have learned to simply have it clearly stated in the tour advertisements that this show will consist of the new album in it's entirety followed by a smattering of older songs?

Didnt say it was the best way. we are dealing with neil here!

your way probably makes too much sense

I am very glad he hasnt become part of the oldies circuit, even with the expensive prices

  12. I think the idea is to get real fans in the seats. If they were $40 tickets, everyone that heard heart of gold one time would be interested in going, and he would have to play an arena, which is what happened with Greendale.

Then when Neil pulls a neil and doesnt play his greatest hits, but instead does a theatre production with crazy horse about the media and the current state of things, or in the case of le noise, a bunch of slightly weird new tunes played on solo electric guitar, he doesnt have to listen to those people booing.

Many of the greendale shows resulted in a bunch of pissed off people, and I think he learned something from that.

Now he has fans that are angry they had to pay so much, and rich people that heard heart of gold one time and think they are about to see james taylor.

Neil has also never denied being capitalist. Through the years he has proven to be a pretty shrewd businessman at times.

I think the main goal was to play these shows in intimate settings, for people that will most likely get the message.

  13. I have a feeling they will put both 1 and 2 out in a boxset sometime.

Or at least reissue 1 and issue 2 within the next few years.

I wonder do they know that they are selling for $80-$100 used. Obviously, there is enough demand to sell some more if they pressed them up, and then they would get to make some money off of it

  14. heating causes humidity issues with acoustic guitars, and guitars in general are affected. Changes in humidity almost always change setups on guitars, and guitars stay in tune better in reasonably cold temps.

  15. I live in tampa and used to complain alot about them not coming to florida, but they will make it once an album tour support, so roughly at least once every year or two they will play either tampa, orlando, jacksonville, etc.

I would love to see them more, but they havent skipped me entirely yet, so I can take that. I have been able to see them for everything from AGIB on.

They played in clearwater last year, and it was a really great show, hope to see them sooner rather than later

  16. $70 is a straight rip-off. $45 is not a good deal. It's only a better price than full retail.

Who the hell has $70 (or even $45) to spend on a vinyl version of a live album they most likely already own on cd?

My turntable setup is way better than my CD setup, so buying cds is basically a waste of money in my case. I was glad to have the chance to pay anything to get a great live album, from one of my favorite bands on vinyl. I listen to it all the time. The box set is extremely nice, much nicer than the My Morning Jacket box, and the vinyl is high quality, flat, and with no surface noise.

  17. You can see linc volt's tag in one of the videos, it looks like she is a goner.

He has spent the last 3 years devoted to that car, that has to be a terrible feeling.

The archive stuff would probably all be on the ranch at the studios there. Those tapes might be masters that have already been digitized, hopefully none were lost, but I would be very surprised if those were the only copies of those tapes in existence.

I bet that facility is where he kept tour gear, such as PA stuff and lighting rigs and tour sets. The videos say there were paintings there, and over the last few tours he has had a painter painting onstage while they played the show, so I bet those are the paintings. I bet the huge rust never sleeps amps were in there.

He has had a really rough year. Hes lost Ben Keith, LA Johnson, and now linc volt and whatever else. I hope he gets some good news about something sometime soon.

  18. I was also at the tampa show.

I have a class on thursday nights (that attendance counts in :( ). The business building is on the other side of the parking lot to the sundome, so the plan was the wife was going to park in the sun dome parking lot, I would drop off my computer in the car, and we would go in to the show. I was going to leave my class at 7:30.

But then it came to pass that I had to give a freakin group presentation. Our group went 2nd. We started at 7:15. at 7:35 we were done presenting. and then the questions start. This project is a completely falsified, doesnt matter what the idea is (the class is international marketing) kind of deal. Our group was presenting on our product, which is instant beer (crystal light, but with beer powder inside). The whole thing is ridiculous. When we finished with our presentation part, someone raised their hand. "How much can you make in a production run?" WTF? I made this crap up from thin air. Most importantly you, who just finished presenting, also made yours up from thin air. give me a break! 15 minutes later, the stupid, pointless questions, which we had to answer with made up out of thin air answers, because the whole entire project was made up out of thin air because this is a MARKETING CLASS, I was able to leave.

Met the wife. She parked on the other side of the business building, so we had to backtrack by a 5 minute walk, drop off the computer, and then run back to the sundome.

We came in as the last bit of "leopard skin pill box hat" rang out. i was sad I missed it, but now I have the boot so it should be okay. Dylan was way better than when I saw him about 4 or 5 years ago. He still sounds like a Frogman doing a tom waits impression without growling, but the band is a nice blues band. As mentioned above, some of the songs are really awesome this way. Ballad of a thin man may trump the original... it felt like satan was hosting a show ala tony bennet, live from the depths of hell! The videos playing behind the screen were really cool. Makes me miss the videos wilco used in 2004/2005. Those were amazing.

great show, see him if you can. just be on time!

  19. umm, what did zeppelin do?. Jimmy has lots of film and audio buried in his jocks that we havent seen or heard yet

For the Song Remains the Same film, there were large sections of video missing/ not captured during the shows, so the band filled the holes with different scenarios with each band member, and the manager. Some people find them ridiculous, others (myself included) think it is really awesome to watch wizard-jimmy climb a mountain while crazy violin bow guitar solo noise is going down.

I cant believe I forgot about gangster tony! That might be the best part of "The Ghost Remains The Same"
