  1. If they did burn the film stock, they should just do what zeppelin did.

I cant wait to see glenn racing and tending to cattle, nels climbing a mountain as a wizard, john, pat and mikael scaring kids and tweedy riding a horse and swordfighting with knights...

that would make a cool concert film!

I really like ashes. I think "wishful thinking" is extra awesome, and the solo on "ashes of american flags" is really killer.

  2. I havent heard the new one.

I enjoyed living with war, but it is hard to listen to more than once in awhile because of the theme. Chrome Dreams suffered from the completely out of place sounding "ordinary people" which is a cool song, but I am more of a fan of a live version I have on bootleg. Dont like the synths. I like prairie wind. I loved greendale, but more because it is a weird lo-fi garage opera. I like how dirty and strange it is, and I love the guitar parts.

I think the last classic "wow" NY record was sleeps with angels. It took me a long time to "get" that record, but now I listen to the first side on my vinyl copy all the time. It is a spooky, strange, and haunting record.

  3. My order # was 675, and they hit my card a couple of days ago. That is a bummer, timewasajoke, for whoever is going to miss out. Hopefully this will be reprinted soon and available to everyone (Mermaid Ave II as well)!

All along I have been looking at this as somewhat of a lottery like thing. If a copy shows up in my mail box, I will be very happy. I still am halfway expecting a CD version of the record.

  4. Dear Robert, Thank you for your order. I'm sorry for the delay in shipping your order - I'm afraid that due to the sudden high volume of orders for 12" vinyl recently we have run out of mailers! I have been promised they are on there way out to me and will send you your album immediately. With Regards, Bragg's Emporium

It looks like it is actually coming eventually!!!!! I'll believe it when I am dropping the needle

  5. I ordered one too.

I bet the Bragg merch people are like "WTF is going on here?"

Theyve probably had a few of these sitting on a shelf somewhere for years wondering why no one ever bought them, or how they would ever get rid of them, and then one day they get 40 orders or something. I don't believe there was a 2nd pressing of this.

Mermaid II isnt on vinyl, and is the last remaining wilco release not on vinyl. I have been hoping they would put it out, or maybe reissue mermaid one and include mermaid two in a box set type thing.

The original pressing of Mermaid Ave isnt anything to write home about. Thin vinyl, no gatefold, etc. But it is cool to have. I was out of work for the first half of this year for the most part and I sold some of my rarer vinyl to get by :( Mermaid Ave was one of my victims (sold it for $100 on amazon)because I was gambling that it would be reissued at least within the next few years. Now it looks like I get to get a copy much sooner than I thought I would :)

I kind of think when they start the new Label, this will be re released. It seems somewhat silly for me to have bands that have albums selling for 50-100 dollars on the open market and for them not to reissue them. Other people are making their money, especially if there is a market at such a high price.

Im also hoping for a b-sides release on vinyl sometime soon, that would be awesome!

  6. just came up on thrasherswheat.org that Ben Keith passed away.

If you don't know who he is, he was a masterful steel guitar player that played with a ton of people but is most famous for playing with Neil Young from Harvest up until Neil's last tour.

He was one of the most melodically gifted players of any instrument imo. He always played the right note at the right time.

    RIP Ben

  7. the songs being listed aren't necessarily intended to be on homegrown. It is rumoured there are around 50 songs that were written in the 1974 time frame that homegrown was supposed to be from. An official listing of the tunes has never leaked, so all that we know of is songs that have been played that are from that period. Mcdonough listed some in the shakey book, and that long list of songs has floated around for awhile, but I think all the lists of what homegrown consists of were made by fans with knowledge of the recorded songs from that era.

We wont know until it comes out, but I bet it will be awesome!

  8. Chrome Dreams is possible his best album. If it would've come out when it was supposed to, it wouldve ruined several albums that followed. Most of the songs are completely different recordings, or were changed drastically for their official release. This is the supposed track list:

    Side one

    "Pocahontas" – 3:24

    "Will to Love" – 7:11

    "Star of Bethlehem" – 2:42

    "Like a Hurricane" – 8:14

    "Too Far Gone" – 2:41

    [edit]Side two

"Hold Back the Tears" – 5:16

    "Homegrown" – 2:20

    "Captain Kennedy" – 2:55

    "Stringman" – 3:32

    "Sedan Delivery" – 5:22

    "Powderfinger" – 3:23

"Look Out for My Love" – 4:06

this is a link to a torrent of this: http://btjunkie.org/torrent/Neil-Young-Chrome-Dreams-1977-FLAC/4032ae8576847cf89bfcbcac882737ddcf260287cf4a

An acetate in very good condition leaked in the late 90s. An acetate is made after they have made a master tape (compilation tape of the songs in the right order so the album can be played) so that the artist and other people can listen to the album. If they like it, then the record pressing stages start. This means that the version of chrome dreams that exists is from far along in the process, and although neil has been known to make changes to stuff at all times, is probably at least very close to what will be coming out.

Homegrown has never had an official track listing of any kind. There are around 25 songs that have been rumored to be on it, but at this point only Neil's inner circle really knows what songs were supposed to be on Homegrown.

There is no telling what Oceanside-Countryside is. It probably has some of the songs that have been talked about from homegrown. There are Crazy Horse songs from the era such as River of Pride, Country Home, and several others. Also, Comes a Time was originally much more sparse so it may have some of those songs.

It almost sounds like it would be a double record, with half Zuma-esque crazy horse and half country stuff. Zuma was recorded in a beach house on Zuma beach in CA.

I'm so freaking excited for all of this. It will be wonderful to get to drop my needle on Chrome Dreams for the first time!

ARCHIVES TEAM WORKS HARD ON VOLUME 2

    July 23, 2010

The NYA team, headed by Will Mitchell and Hannah Johnson, is digging through material supplied by numerous sources, including newspapers, writers, fans, bootleg audio collectors and photographers (special thanks to photographer/collector Joel Bernstein). Much work has been done and there is much left to do. Using the template designed by the late Larry Johnson, the whole team is pushing forward.

Special thanks to audio engineers John Nowland, Tim Mulligan and the team at Redwood Digital for the unbelievable amount of work that has been accomplished so far. Volume 2 promises even more content than Volume 1, with many unreleased tracks.

Four unreleased albums from this period are being rebuilt and will be available in the NYA Special Release Series. Chrome Dreams, Homegrown and Oceanside-Countryside are the three unreleased studio albums. Also from this period is the unreleased Odeon-Budokan live recording produced by David Briggs and Tim Mulligan. These albums initially will be released in vinyl from analog masters as they originally were created for that format. So now is the time to get your new phonograph player. The new players, built with today's technology, are exceptionally good.

    NYTIMES

  10. I saw him play at a super small place (50 people, maybe) here in tampa. I used to play at the place every wednesday, and the owner basically forced me to come. I had never heard of richard Buckner.

I got there and he had 3 vintage 60s Valco amps, which I am big into and have had before myself. He had some cool 60s cheapo electrics, an acoustic 12 string, and an acoustic guitar with a couple looper pedals. He was really quiet and shy, but he was nice to me. We talked a little about his amps before he went on. He saw me oogling them, and asked if I knew what they were.

Anyways, he started playing, and would record a section and layer over it with a different guitar. He did this to change songs, but it made the entire performance seem like one long, morphing song. He didn't look up the entire time, and was literally in a trance. It was really awesome. He was about 2 and a half hours into this, and this guy actually walked up and patted him on the back (while richard was still in the trance state) to tell him he was doing great or something like that. It scared Buckner, and he stopped the song he was doing and said, "good night".

The rest of the audience was so pissed at that guy. Every now and then I will see him at a local show, and I always make a point to ask him if he is going to disrupt any performances during the evening.

  11. They should do a secret show in Chicago. I dont live there, so I wouldnt get to see it, but that would be sweet. Find a small local club (100 capacity), pay all the bands on the bill a couple hundred bucks for their troubles, and rock out for the night.

Video stream it on the internet?

  12. kay, valco, and harmony changed everything from model to model. All of their instruments can be completely unique, and they would all put any brand on the headstock someone would pay them to put on there. and the inconsistencies are what make them cool! They were cheaper, and many times not taken very good care of, meaning very few have made it. All of this combines to make them more fun to collect!

  13. The track record of bands starting their own labels has never been particularly good, ask Paul McCartney how Apple turned out. But I think at this stage labels are quickly becoming irrelevant anyway, they might as well take their shot at it.

    --Mike

Apple didnt turn out well because the beatles actually tried to run the thing. As long as Tony handles the business end, I think it will be a good idea. They will definitely make more of their money instead of forking over all of their record sales to labels that dont really do anything but distribute anyways.

  14. The ticket prices for neil almost have to be steep, if he wants to play at anything other than an amphitheater. He sold out the 5,000 seat Fox theater in atlanta, with the cheap seats at a face of 70, and the expensive ones at 250. This tour wouldn't have worked in a bigger venue, it was too intimate.

If the tickets were cheaper, even more scalpers would've invested in them.

The problem is he has a large block of people that only own harvest and harvest moon, and due to the size of that block, there are people that dont even realize he has put out anything new in 18 years that will see Neil Young listed on an upcoming events list and say "that Neil Young fellow will be playing soon, didnt he sing that wonderful song "teach your Children" we should go see him." and then those people end up buying tickets.

At these prices, the only people that will go will be the rich version of the people described above, and mega fans. Unfortunately for the mega fans, the high prices are necessary.

I felt like it was worth my 90 bucks or whatever it ended up costing after fees and all. It was much better than paying 50 bucks and seeing him in a 20,000 seat venue and watching him on two big screens while people yell for "Southern Man" all night.

  15. New records can have very small invisible to the eye obstructions that can cause skips. You may have to slightly increase tracking weight on some new albums if they skip some.

Most skipping problems are do to improper setup.

very small amounts of dust on your needle can cause sticking as well.

Many people mistake problems with their setup with problems with their records.

I have around 300 new vinyl albums, and NONE of them skip. A few of them, including my copy of summerteeth had a skip or two that increased weight fixed. My system is more accurately setup now, and I havent had any skipping issues.

  16. My record player is a complete peice of shit but I think it's on the record. The vinyl is clean and the skip is consistent. It's no big deal I was just wondering if anybody else had the same skip.

It more than likely isnt really the vinyl.

If you have the tracking weight too low, a little bit of dust or gunk can cause a slip. Increasing the tracking weight can dislodge the dust, and then it will play fine.

gunk can accumulate on your needle and fall into a groove, or it can stay on the needle and cause weird stuff to happen.

You have to remember, that needle is barely touching the record at all. It is very easy to make it jump.

Sometimes new records are kind of "sticky" and can get crap in them and cause them to skip. It would behoove you to play it through with the tracking weight up a little bit.

I always clean my new vinyl in my spin wash system and use a record brush on every album on every side before I play it. I use one of the little microfiber ones and it takes two seconds.
