  1. Last night's show was absolutely beautiful. The stripped down, quieter versions of so many old favorites were an unbelievable treat. Totally gorgeous. I especially loved the Summerteeth songs. And Cars Cant Escape is back in rotation! Yay. The stage set was unexpected -- a backdrop of trees and leaves with the band's simple, up-front set up. I am sure it was a quick design plan after Jeff playing the Pickathon Woods Stage :love .  Ok ok, not really...but it  was *as close to* the Woods Stage as you could get, while reaping the benefits of the Schniz's acoustics.

I was sitting 3 rows behind the guys with the cellphones. The first row of StubHub assholes were seriously unbelievably rude. I have never seen Jeff so frustrated, and yes it totally escalated over the course of the show.  First it was a funny and playful comment (but obvious). Then it was a harsh direct call-out. Then Jeff gave the dude the finger WHILE singing, without missing a beat. Then in a moment of total frustration, he tossed his guitar at the end of a song. I also assumed he was going to walk off stage. Thank God he didn't because I would have punched the asshole for cutting it short!

I LOVED Jeff's comment directly to the front/center guy: "Do you use your cellphone while you're at the movie theater? No? Well that's interesting.  You pay MORE respect to a movie screen, than to live artists on a stage. Alright."   Why didn't the fu*%er leave the venue at that point????

Remember a few years ago, there used to be a pre-show announcement "Cellphones and video or camera photos are strictly prohibited?" They need to reinstate that announcement.  Otherwise this shitshow will not end. Because the first 2 rows of seated Wilco shows are unfortunately filled with these MoFos.  UGH!!!  :crybaby  :crybaby  :crybaby

Anyway, Thank you Wilco for another night of music therapy.  You're always there when I need you. I can't wait for the new record listening party! xxoo

  2. I like the mellow stuff much more. Like, if they would've played At Dawn from beginning to end I would've been a happy girl. Beautiful & interesting venue by the way, especially the atrium entrance. The steep hill leading up (and down!) to the venue was a killer on my knees!

  3. I saw them on the last two of the three-night San Francisco run. Both were great shows but on the last night they took it to another level. Great set list and amazing energy.

The only thing I'm curious about is they don't seem to be adding "Big Decisions" to their recent set lists, which is too bad because it's one of my favorites off the new album.

I went to the 2nd show in San Fran. Too much rock for me. I knew it wasn't going to be my cup of tea when Jim came on stage in a black cape and a flying V!

  4. I'm pretty sure the only time Wilco has ever sampled anything was in I Might.

I don't think this is an accurate statement. There are a few songs. Those birds at the beginning of Summerteeth…originally from something else? Right? [that's just one e.g.)

  5. Another whirlwind 30 hour kamikaze Wilco trip is on the books. What a great escape. Although I moved away 10 years ago, this city is still sweet home Chicago. Friday night’s setlist was a happy trip down memory lane.  I was fortunate enough to stand at “my favorite spot in the entire world”: Front row, between Nels and Jeff. I hadn’t been to a Wilco show since Solid Sound 2013. WHAT??!!

The setlist order was nothing short of amazing; a perfect compilation of 30 songs spanning 20 years. Opening with Via Chicago set the tone.

The demo version of “Camera” was unfuckingreal. I seriously felt like I was on another planet. A really great planet.

“On and On and On” was incredibly moving and beautiful. As if Jeff’s heart and soul were bare for all to witness. Setlist tearjerker.

I have heard “California Stars” a bazillion times over the years, and last night’s version was my favorite rendition ever. I loved the banjo, and the harmonies were simple, clear and sweet.

Last night was near perfect. I can think of only 3 elements missing: (1) “Poor Places” from the setlist  (2) Susan Miller from the audience, and (3) about 20 other people from the front row. And this is the moment where I want to “tag” people like Pneyu, woman at the bar, la*, wafer, samorama, Sooz, Maudie, Trish, Hodie, Twisted Acres, Alison the Wilca, Walrus, Stardog, and all the rest of you lovely people. Most of these folks don't come round VC anymore. These shows are celebrating 20 years of Wilco. Personally, I am celebrating 20 years of a band that has affected my life in ways unimaginable. I have lifelong friends from all walks of life, many whom I would have never crossed paths with otherwise.

Wilco shows are a 2.5 hour escape from the bullshit of life. Thank you for being my therapy, my drug, my anecdote…with a guaranteed 100% cure rate, every single damn time. Here’s to 20 more years.

  6. [no, i didn't post this in the wrong section. it is wilco related]

I was not at the last Wilco Residency…was it in 2007 when I had an infant or something like that? Anyway, I would recommend that you all get your flu vaccines now, because based on the After the Show threads from the first Wilco Residency, I am quite certain that there was a major influenza outbreak at the Riviera over the span of the 5 shows and the following week. It was a perfect epidemiologic outbreak situation: Piles of Wilco fans and friends in close contact for hours (waiting in line, inside the venue, etc etc) during the dead of Chicago winter.

SO Get your flu vaccines NOW!  :badger

This is what the flu outbreak reminded me of…the initial SARS outbreak which all started at Hotel M:

I will be closely monitoring the After the Show threads this December! I should write a scientific manuscript about using social media to detect influenza outbreaks.

  7. I think we are going to try to stay somewhere cheap outside of Nashville the night between shows. We can't afford the usual place we go (Embassy Suites on Broadway) because we've ended up with 3 extra tickets that we can't use (hoping my friend takes 2 of them) Ended up buying about $500 worth of tickets. :-/

Hi Sarah, if you still have 3 extras that you need to offload let me know. Im thinking about going to one of the Ryman shows.

  8. That's is the craziest review I've ever read. Here is Ben's profile. Even his profile is in dire need of an editor!---

"I was born in Brooklyn, New York and married a wonderful Canadian Greek girl. I moved to Toronto to make that happen, and have increasingly become used to inferior rye bread. I write about running and music and general lifestyle stories, and enjoy Sunday nights with The Beauties at the Dakota Tavern, although with a little girl on the way who knows how long that will last for. You can find me on Twitter at Twitter.com/KapBenjamin and our running page on Facebook at Facebook.com/NationalPostRunning."
