  1. That is going to be an enjoyable trip. We, wife and I, want to return to New Zealand for a longer stay. 3 summers ago we chaperoned some students on a trip to NZ, Sydney and Honolulu. I don't really care for these trips as a guided tour is not my way of traveling but the price is right! Anyway, we were in Auckland for a day and Rotorua for 2. We didn't really see a lot of Auckland. The waterfront was nice and we found a good brewpub, the Shakespeare Brewery Tavern and Hotel. Rotorua was wonderful. It is in a Moari cultural area and is also a geothermal area. Our hotel had 3 private, natural geothermal spas. We definitely enjoyed those, twice. Rotorua itself is a nice little town. Good fish and chip shops. The best was the Whaka geothermal area itself and the Whaka Maori village. Very interesting people. We learned lots about the history and culture. If possible, go to the Waitomo caves. A cool cave in general but part of the tour is in a boat through darkness and includes glowworms. A unique experience. We also went to the Agrodome, which we expected to be incredibly lame but it was surprisingly fun. We learned a heck of a lot about different sheep and their different wool but the sheep shearing exhibition and the sheepdog show were old school cool. We also attended a hangi feast in Rotorua. Kind of like a luau, I'd guess. Touristy but incredible food. Our guide for the entire trip was Maori, so that was a bonus. I also watched a hell of a lot of rugby! Go All Blacks.

I am envious as will be my wife when I tell her. Enjoy!

  2. As far as it happening as a one off charity event, as a couple of folks mentioned, that opportunity came and went at the Gary Schepers benefit. If they weren't going to do it for an old friend that played a role in their early success, then they aren't going to do it. I know for a fact (from the principal's email to me) that another principal from those days attempted to make it happen. Jeff played a solo show, as did Jay, and Heidorn played a set with the Boquists. Jeff joined the Bottle Rockets during their set (fanatastic happening. Youtube it) but no Jeff and Jay with or without other(s).

I have no desire for a UT reunion. It would be contrived and soulless. I actually hope for a Coffee Creek reunion. I'd pay big money for that. I love to listen to those shows. That's music, just some friends having a hell of a time. That's what I was suggesting for the Gary Schepers benefit. It could work for a charity gig. All covers, so less egos regarding songs. Another principal member to act as a counter-weight and more of a chance that it would be a fun way to raise some money for a worthy cause. But if it didn't happen then...

  3. What's up with the bald spot on the top of Tweedy's head? Just saw the Letterman and Colbert Mavis Staples video. Surprised by the back of Jeff's head.

I am going out on a limb here and really risking looking foolish but it could be that Jeff Tweedy is balding.

  4. I said the Indigo Girls' Tangled Up In Blue in said thread, and I too, will be sticking to it.

Live on 1200 Curfews? I'm with you, sir.

Apparently either: a)no one has any interest in exploring Jimmy LaFave's Dylan covers b)People have heard his Dylan and don't want to tell me he sucks the proverbial donkey dicks (thanks but I can take it), c)Others also like his Dylan but couldn't be arsed to mention it, d)anything that my name is attached to is summarily ignored or e)all of the above.

I don't know what this icon is meant to symbolize but I like good beer :beer

  5. There are many stellar Dylan covers but for some that are not as well known, all of Jimmy LaFave's (and there are many) rank with the best. He is a sincere fan and a reverent interpreter of Dylan's music. The double album, Trail, has 12 Dylan covers. Most of his albums have a couple on them. LaFave also is a Woody Guthrie fan and interpreter. He is working on a CD, ala the Mermaid series, in which he chose 19 lyrics from Nora Guthrie's archive. If you aren't familiar with Jimmy LaFave, he is worth checking out. His own compositions are mostly excellent and he puts on a fantastic live show.

  6. Damn. Liver cancer. A serious battle. I am a Little Feat fan but never saw them. I did see Richie Hayward. New Years Eve circa 1988, I saw X and Warren Zevon at Busch Gardens. Hayward was playing drums for Zevon. Warren was very excited that he was sitting in. For some reason I've always remembered Zevon introducing his band. He was beaming when he said, "on drums Richie Hayward. How did I get him?". Now they are both gone. If they aren't jamming again, the afterlife is no great shakes.

  7. Awesome find. Never saw that one before. That video lead me to this one ...

Check out Tweedy's hair! I guess I haven't seen a lot of 2000-ish videos. Weird style...

Billy Bragg had an integral role in that performance making it obvious why he had top billing. Jay's coat should have been sold at the merch table.

  8. Mr. Heartbreak, what is this "Ford Amphitheatre" of which you speak? The 8/7/10 Aerosmith concert was at the 1-800-ASK-GARY Amphitheatre at the Florida State Fairgrounds. You had to have known of the name change. Louisville Greg felt no shame in naming his local KFC Yum! Center in the 'MMJ to play biggest ever Louisville show'thread. How could you not proudly represent our fair city's beloved 'Gary'?
