  1. It seems rather obvious to me that we are experiencing the first effects of "Peak Oil", also referred to as "Hubbert's Peak" (named after the geologist M. King Hubbert, who predicted U.S. oil production would plateau in the '70's, and worldwide production would peak in the early years of the 21st Century). A quick glance at the numbers show that discovery and production rates for petroleum have begun to stall over the past several years, while demand continues to grow, in part due to rapidly growing economies such as India & China. This doesn't mean that the world has run out of oil, but
  2. I don't look for bullshit reasons to hate Wilco and I still love their music. I just find it incongrous that they would take issue with BP dumping in Lake Michigan (which is definitely bad for the environment), while at the same time allowing their music to be used in an ad campaign to sell more cars (which are one of the worst sources of pollution on the planet...which is also bad). And YES, I do think they are selling cars and I DO think they are endorsing VW. To say that they are not, I believe, is simply an "asinine idea".
  3. OK...Thanks for clearing that up.
  4. I'm glad that Wilco is raising awareness on this issue, and I signed the petition...However, does anyone find it a tad hypocritical, given the fact that they 're now selling cars (Cars still run on petroleum, right?)?
  5. I'd be willing to bet that, historically, Christianity has spent more time in the role of persecutor than persecuted.
  6. Well, I'm with you on that...although the Bush administration has set the bar pretty high for corruption. Overall, elections these days seem like they ultimately end up being a choice between a shit sandwich and a shit popsicle.
  7. I guess I see your point...I mean, there really is no harm with high-ranking officials in the most powerful military force in the history of civilization looking to the Good Book for guidance. After all, our Commander in Chief NEVER leaves his faith at the door....According to him, J.C. actually gave a thumbs up to the whole Iraq invasion! Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition.
  8. Yes, there is something wrong with that...SEPARATION OF CHURCH & STATE!!! I have no problem with high-ranking military officials or government representatives (or anyone) practing their faith in private...but keep it out of my government and schools! It has nothing to do with being "P.C.".
  9. This is a great book regarding this topic...
  10. Haven't you heard the Good News? God is on our side!!!
  11. No...bible studies don't scare me. Bible studies & prayer breakfasts at the friggin' PENTAGON? Christian Evangelist organizations potentially influencing and informing DOD policy?? Ummm...YEAH, I guess that does sorta give me the willies. Ha-lay-loo-yah.
  12. Anyone else as enraged/frightened by this as I am? http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/080307A.shtml
  13. I'm sure this is old news, but I just saw the message on Wilcoworld regarding British Petroleum's plans to "dump toxic sludge" into Lake Michigan. Cheers to Wilco for taking BP to task and raising environmental awareness amongst their fanbase! I, for one, plan on filling up my Jetta's tank elsewhere from this day henceforth!
  14. Honda commercials? Or maybe Toyota...hard to say.
  15. Ahhh, got it! Haven't seen the film in a while. Sorry...thought my spidey-sense was picking up sarcasm!
  16. ...And that "something" would be...?
  17. ...caused me to sculpt a near perfect scale model of the Marina Towers out of mashed potatoes at the dinner table.
  18. That guy had cancer and went through a brutal round of chemo treatment. Definitely something you don't bounce back from right away.
  19. With a running time just shy of 6 minutes, "Impossible Germany" is clearly and indisputably the heaviest track on SBS...much harder to lift than the other songs on the album. I recommend using your legs to alleviate any potential strain on the back. P.S. - I always use a spotter when I listen to "Spiders (Kidsmoke)", "Less Than You Think", and of course "Remember the Mountain Bed".....safety first!
  20. Happy 4th to you! Sorry if I called you out too harshly...if so, it was mostly out of a collective frustration caused by several other posts (not just yours). If there is a common theme to all the debate over this issue, it is that we all feel a passionate connection to Wilco and their music. Unfortunately, that passion can sometimes get the better of our emotions, and that's when the gloves come off! I certainly agree that there are more important issues/problems in the world today. Anyway, no hard feelings and enjoy the holiday! If you're ever in Chicago and our paths cross, first roun
  21. Chicken may be fine for all of you flag-waving phonies and part-time patriots.....personally, nothing gets my taste buds humming Battle Hymn of the Republic like my Independence Day BBQ specialty: Bunker Buster Bald Eagle Burgers...served with choice of Freedom Fries or Shock & Awe Potato Salad!
  22. I find it fascinating that the majority of mud-slinging, name-calling, personal attacks, etc. regarding this issue seem to come from veteran posters who proclaim themselves "true fans". Just because someone may not agree with Wilco's choice to endorse VW, it doesn't mean they're any less of a fan than those who agree with/are indifferent to the ads. I realize this is a so-called "community", and that many of you have been posting here for years...but do you honestly think your opinion is more valid or carries more weight than a newcomer? I've been a fan since the Tupelo days and I've gladly
  23. I really enjoyed those VW commercials from a year ago or so. The ones that showed a group of friends happily driving in a VW and chatting away, when suddenly........WHAMMO!!!!...a truck plows right into the side of the unsuspecting VW! Screen goes black for a second or two until we see, to our great relief, that everyone is fine (the airbags saved them!) and being tended to by paramedics. Then, one of the VW's occupants, clearly in shock but grateful for the safety features of the VW, exclaims, "HOLY SH--...!"). The words, "Safe Happens." then come up on screen to close the commercial. I'd
