With all the talk around Andy's Fuzzy Warbles releases (deservedly so I may add) the last few years, I figured it was about time XTC's bassist and secondary singer/songwriter Colin Moulding received some props. His bass playing, a cross between Paul McCartney and James Jamerson and his way of turning a vocal melody were key components in the evolution of the band over the course of 25+ years. XTC, a band known for their long-standing critical success may be no more as in November 2006, Partridge told the press that Moulding no longer had any interest in writing, performing or even listening to music. Partridge said he would not continue XTC without Moulding, and therefore has been forced to regard XTC "in the past tense."

MP3: Boston Spaceships: ""Come on Baby Grace" "

2010 is looking like Bob Pollard's most productive year since at least 2009. He's got the Guided By Voices reunion tour coming up, sure, but if you thought he was just going to sit back and count that reunion cash for the rest of the year, well, you don't know Bob. The man is planning to release five albums over the next 10 months, starting off with Our Cubehouse Still Rocks, a new LP from his band Boston Spaceships due out September 7 on GBV Inc. Download a track from it above, and click on to read about all the other things Bob has planned.

Come January, Pollard will put out a new solo album called Space City Kicks featuring 18 short songs on GVB Inc. And then in February comes a record from his Lifeguards project with ex-GBV guitarist Doug Gillard called Waving at the Astronauts on Serious Business and Ernest Jenning Record Co. March brings an as-yet-untitled album from something called Mars Classroom, aka Pollard and Gary Waleik of Big Dipper. And, perhaps most promising, another Boston Spaceships release called Let It Beard comes out in May on GBV Inc.; the 26-track double LP features guitar guest shots from J. Mascis, Wire's Colin Newman, the Dirtbombs' Mick Collins, King Missile's Dave Rick, and the Dream Syndicate's Steve Wynn.

Pollard's also got an art show called The Public Hi-Fi Balloon at New York's 45 Space August 27-28. The gallery will feature "more than 60 imaginary record sleeves, as well as dreamed-up magazines and coffee table books," according to a press release, and will be hosted by "Sopranos" star Michael Imperioli (why not?!), who Pollard has worked with in the past.

....and on a completely different note, GbV tickets have been procured for The Warfield show in SF on 10/5. Yesssss.

  4. After hearing Jeff's cover of the Handsome Family's 'So Much Wine' at the Union Chapel show last month I was wondering if you guys could give me some suggestions on their output. I have heard a couple of their tunes on compliation Cds but am looking to pick up a couple of albums.

    Where should I start?

    Thanks in advance.

Through The Trees (1999), which happens to be the one with JT's contributions.

  5. I wanted to interrupt all the recent GbV reunion hoopla with more exciting news.

Boston Spaceships : Our Cubehouse Still Rocks Sept. 7, 2010

    6550350812290_main.jpg

Following three full-length Boston Spaceships records in only two years, Our Cubehouse Still Rocks is a breakthrough fourth album from the band featuring Robert Pollard (Guided By Voices), Chris Slusarenko (Guided By Voices) and John Moen (Decemberists). The collaboration began as a long-distance recording project, but brilliantly hits its stride on this album as an unshakable, actualized band. For a group that took their name from the over-the-top UFO illustrations on record covers from '70s arena rockers Boston, there's no denying a classic-rock flag flying high overhead. Just below, however, is the bustling churn of art-damaged new wave, echoes of Devo, mid-period Wire and the sour songcraft of the Rough Trade stable. From the near-prog sunshine psych of "Track Star" to the barn-burning album closer "In the Bathroom," the sixteen songs fly by in a gust of demented, high-energy pop. Pollard's visual arts talents, especially his fascination with collage, have integrated themselves into the sonic realm with Boston Spaceships. While early GBV had the occasional tape cut-up, on this album compositional collage runs through the songwriting, be it schizophrenic structure or a completely random burst of overdubbed drum solos. Easily the best collection of songs from the Spaceships, the record is brimming with hooks and Pollard's incredible gift for melodies so catchy they shine through even the weirdest musical surroundings. More than anything here, Pollard sounds rejuvenated and excited. At this point--literally thousands of songs into a decades-long career--one might anticipate his unprecedented prolific output would result in a few phoned-in numbers. But once again this is not the case. Our Cubehouse Still Rocks is the sound of a band alive with the energy and excitement of making a brand new, incredible noise. Every second feels electric.

  6. Earlier this week, we learned that Guided By Voices would reunite to play Matador's 21st birthday party, which goes down October 1-3 at the Palms Casino and Resort in Las Vegas. But other than frontman Robert Pollard, Guided by Voices has had more lineups than a baseball team. So what exactly does this reunion mean?

The Matador 21 poster promised "the classic '93-'96 lineup." And yesterday, Pollard revealed precisely who will be involved in the reunion. Talking to Spinner, Pollard said, "It's better than the original line-up: Tobin Sprout and Mitch Mitchell [guitars], Kevin Fennell [drums], and Greg Demos [bass]."

Pollard also said that they'll stick to period-appropriate music: "We'll be performing songs from the albums Propeller, Bee Thousand, Alien Lanes, and Under the Bushes Under the Stars, as well as from singles and EPs from that era."

  7. Well, I successfully waited for the proper release and stayed away from this thread for awhile. And, wow.

I am on my 3rd listen and this album is following my usual path to a favorite. I was lukewarm on the first listen, but then things started opening up and making sense on the second listen. And then, we achieved takeoff on the third.

Also, I see what people mean about the production on the first track. I am going to sit with this for a lot longer before I make a judgment.

Man, it's so nice when something in life actually meets your ridiculous expectations. :)

I read somewhere a few weeks ago that after several iterations, they decided to use the original demos for both Terrible Love & Lemonworld.

  8. I can't hang with the Pollardheads around here, but I am thoroughly enjoying Speak Kindly of Your Volunteer Fire Department right now. I have no idea where fans think that album sits in the pantheon.

In my opinion , it's up there pretty high. There are 7-8 solid pollard tracks that would make just about any best-of.

As for post NH, here's a mix I put together last August, that coincidentally enough, is just that. One caveat, it contains nothing from the last BSpaceships record, ZERO to 99. I would give him in that in its entirety.

  9. As I've stated before, Highway & Cigarettes, Methamphetamine, and Dust of Daylight are the only true "classic" Jay songs from the last two records.

I've regretfully never seen Marah live, but have been a fan since Kids In Philly.

As far as I'm concerned, these are all great.

  10. I've been a fan of Pollard's songs for fifteen years +. Even though there has been a 'slight' decline in the last few years, almost every record still has 3-5 Pollard gems. As much as B1000, Alien Lanes, UTBUTS are classics in my opinion, it may not be a good launching pad to "get" what's he doing. Some people just can't get past lo-fi and all that tape hiss on Toby's 4-track. I've had much better success with Pollard newbies with a newer selection of tracks, and 'then' having them work there way back if they're still interested. You could also just pick up his first solo record 'From A Compound Eye'(one of the best records of the last decade, or any decade for that matter) or last year's Boston Spaceships record 'Zero to 99', which is really the best thing he's done since FaCE.

I'd also like to echo the love for Dean Wells and 'The Capstan Shafts' as well. There's a 30-song comp here if you're interested.
