  1. Ok it's growing on me, but I still feel it's a little too slight for my tastes. It just kinda begins and ends, and I don't think it leaves much of impression compared to their other records. It doesn't feel like a Wilco record to me. Which is usually an "experience" in it self. Jeff is awfully negative/pessimistic on this record, which I think everyone can relate too, but I think it's a little too on the nose.

I think if Tweedy -Sukirae hadn't come out just two years ago, I'd feel more appreciative of this smaller / more subtle sound. Instead it just feels similar. I can hear Low Key, world away, And Summer Moon coming out of these sessions more than anything off Star Wars. In not only the production, but also Jeff's overall vocal sound.

Not to mention Tweedy had an epic tracklisting compared. Some of these tracks could have been Tweedy B-sides and I wouldn't have noticed the difference, besides a few touches here and their of the supporting band mates.

I'm actually starting to think I may just create a play list of Star Wars / Schmilco together to give both albums much needed depth and resonance. How much more amazed would we have been if this released as a double album instead?

Would have almost liked an entire album of stuff like Common Sense and Locater. These songs feel the most progressive of the set, even if they aren't my favorite songs on the album.

I do hope that these songs grow and come alive throughout the years at their shows, which I'm sure will happen.

If I were to rate it today...B-

  2. I'm curious how much money goes into marketing these events. I'm sure there are cool stores where more than 5-10 people show up, but I bet it's a pretty small number. The store near me that had the "party" caters to a pretty sceney crowd that wouldn't be caught dead with a wilco record in their bag.

  3. I'm dying over here... it's a small number of days. I LOVE that people are wrestling with it. I'm really into the idea that a band can be around for so many years and still challenge their listeners.

Yeah I totally agree with this. If it was just another wilco album i would probably be more disappointed. I do think more than a few of these tracks feel like "solo" or Tweedy material. So there are some comparisons there. I need more time on this one. It feels just a tad Too slight. It may come off better live.

  4. Hey I totally understand being "true" to the band or something, but then why did you download it early in the first place? And how can you possibly resist listening to it after you've downloaded it?

If you live in south Florida I can point you to a store that already has it for sale on the shelf.

The album has been legally obtained now by several people. Should they not listen to it because wilco is having a promotional event at a record store?

    Scratching my head here.

  5. Thanks for the nice words John but my post was directed at the Mods, and the band itself who requested we take any mention of the leak down.

Anyway, it's over now. Let's focus on everyone's opinion of the record. It's one of their most unique to date.

  6. Wow Mr Link. Here is my take in less words.

I heard it leaked from a friend , that doesn't post here. Although I may have alerted the board first, I have no idea where it originated from. Either does he.

The Internet works almost instantaneous these days. So once it's out there , there isn't much you can do.

I made the board aware immedialty for a few reasons.

    1. Out of all the corners of the Internet, this is probably the largest gathering of hardcore Wilco fans. Fans that not only have seen them live and follow all their concert set lists, but Fans that have no qualms pre ordering their records without a second thought. Some even buying multiple copies. If anyone deserves to hear this album ASAP it's Via Chicago.

    2. Most of the folks that can go to these local wilco listening parties, will do so, even if they already heard the album, and have a copy pre ordered with Kung Fu. The experience and all the contest drawings will be worth it alone.

    3. Not everyone has a cool record store near them, or had the ability to attend the event anyway, due to work or family related reasons. It's a very few select people that get to experience these parties in the first place. If I "upset" these people, I apologize, but please understand there are a lot more people that can't go then can.

So in summary, I do feel guilty about "alerting" everyone on here about the leak. I do not want this band that has given so much to me since I first heard Them almost 2 decades ago with my wife to be, any financial hardship. However I truly believe that this is the place that deserves to hear new Wilco music the minute it's available.

So I apologize, and I hope the band and the mods on This board understands.
