Now I remember why I was an independent all those years.

Well, capital punishment is ok because the guy being electrifried is guilty, and not innocent like them little babies. And besides, even if he is wrongfully convicted, it’s ok because he’s in the loving arms of god now – and god don’t make no mistakes. But then that got me to thinking, if someone claims theys found the lord, and been forgiven, how is it then that it’s ok to go ahead and fry him anyway? Isn’t the central tenet of the bible forgiveness, and that we should turn the other half of our faces? And if so, how is it that we can justify killing someone who’s been saved, even if he is gu -

We could just make it so that the unemployed dude who spends all his days down a the clinic, protesting, could just check a little box on his W2 that says in no way shape or form should his tax dollars be used to fund abortion. -

To my knowledge – no, though it’s certainly possible. With that said, there’s a difference between booing someone, and shouting “you lie.” Which, coming from a politician, well, kettle meet pot and all that. And let's face it, assuming they did, the fucker deserved to be booed. I’d have a little more understanding, and a little less contempt for the “ no way is my tax dollars going to fund abortion” crowd if they were even just a little consistent, because, for whatever reason, the same crowd that equates abortion with murder, is usually the same crowd that is 110% in favor of increasing -

I see your point, but the blatantly dishonest, nonsensical outbursts issuing from the right are probably the largest roadblock to any sort of meaningful healthcare reform. And from a purely strategic perspective, Democrats would be wise to focus on Wilson’s belligerent, assholish reaction to Obama’s speech. It makes the Republican Party appear petty and foolish, which, guilty as charged. There are plenty of reasonable, sober reasons to be skeptical of Obama’s plan, unfortunately, the opposition has chosen to ignore them in favor of death panels and forced abortion clinics – if they want to -

Well said Matt. With regards to the - we can afford this if we just cut out the waste proposition, well, I wish it were that simple. It didn’t get me any closer to owning an Xbox 360 at home, and I suspect it won’t win much traction with anyone responsible for balancing a checkbook. For me, it comes largely down to this: That large-heartedness – that concern and regard for the plight of others – is not a partisan feeling. It is not a Republican or a Democratic feeling. It, too, is part of the American character. Our ability to stand in other people’s shoes. A recognition that we are all -

True – but it’s sort of unheard of here. And, as they say, when in Rome… It’s just a further sign of the O’ReillyLimbaughization of the Republican Party – it was a presidential address fer christ’s sake, not a right-wing radio addled commute to the office. And given that it came from a republican, the party responsible for pitching a shit fit whenever and wherever someone dared to criticize Bush, just that much more hypocritical. -

Rep. Wilson shouts to Obama during speech: 'You lie' http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/09/10/obama.heckled.speech/index.html I'm sure Wilson was equally hard on Bush as he stood in front of the nation and lied, repeatedly and often, which is why we're stuck in the mud in Iraq - but then, probably not. I'm sure he's also publicly critical of the "death panel" bs his collegues have been spouting, but then probably not also. We're heckling people now, seriously? WTF????? -

I’m not a lawyer, so, when it comes to deciphering this stuff, out of necessity, I leave it up to those I trust, check multiple sources, etc. Now, you can (quite rightly) say I’m guilty of relying on the gifts and so also the biases of the individuals responsible for translating this legalese, but unfortunately, that is the case with all journalism. To mitigate this unfortunate, yet unavoidable fact, I tend to gather my news from as many sources as is humanly possible, while still putting aside time to live an actual life – or some semblance thereof. Whereupon I quote from David Foster Wall -

Leave it to the right to put a negative spin on Obama’s recommendation that kids should, like, stay in school. "The text of the president’s speech to schoolchildren is largely inoffensive. But it contains at least one political gaffe. If you quit school, he tells the kids, “You’re not just quitting on yourself, you’re quitting on your country.” Among Americans between ages 65 and 74, 20.7 percent quit before finishing high school. For those 75 and older, the figure is 27.4 percent. The latter group includes some who quit in order to enlist in the armed forces after Pearl Harbor. And yet the -

Meanwhile, in the real world, more and more disturbing news is being unearthed in relation to the behavior of Obama’s predecessors: From The Daily Dish: Cheney's Lingering Legacy He wielded US power for the purpose of undoing the Geneva Conventions and the UN Convention on Torture, and we now learn, he was eager to reverse long-standing US policy to prevent the "disappearances" of suspects: From 2003 to 2006, the Bush administration quietly tried to relax the draft language of a treaty meant to bar and punish "enforced disappearances" so that those overseeing the CIA's secret prison syst -

Ugh – as usual, in an effort to ensure both sides of a “debate” are represented equally, the media frames it, the debate, as if there even is a debate – when, in fact, there isn’t. In a sane world, we’d dismiss the right’s claims out of hand, but since the media has been pretty much beaten into submission with the whole bullshit liberal media shtick – they can’t, so, we have to pretend the crazy people have a valid or at least mildly debatable point, when they don’t, at all – they’re just fucking crazy. -

Because the base is the lunatic fringe – it just so happens that the “fringe” in this case, represents a substantial portion of the party. -

No, not really. Not while they hold the mic and steer the party – which, unfortunately, they do. Michael Steele, the chairman of the RNC can not and will not bring himself to admit that this whole death panel thing is fucking ridiculous – either a.) because he truly believes it, which I doubt, or b.) and this is more likely, because he fears pissing off and/or offending the base – i.e. – the lunatic fringe. The fact that this shit even reaches the level that we’re discussing it, on the national level, speaks to the vast number of morons who hold these views. Which also helps explain all the -
What's the consensus on Wilco (The Album)?
Good Old Neon replied to Shining Sunbeam's topic in Just A Fan
Other than a few initial spins, I haven’t listened to it since its release. Most of the songs remind me of other, better Wilco songs, so I’d rather just listen to those songs, than pale imitations of those other songs, is what I like to do. This one sounds like a career retrospective, which, hopefully, is some sort of jumping off point for a more unique, creative sounding next album. -

I tried to read it, but only got about a paragraph in before I started to like, quite literally, morph into Joseph Stalin – if Stalin were a gay America hating, book learning liberal. So I stopped – but I’m keeping the moustache. -

Unfortunately, this crazy horseshit knows no borders – it’s just as prevalent and common here in NH, as it is just about anywhere else. We were fortunate enough to have a pistol-packing moron attend an Obama event in Portsmouth, pretty much the epicenter of liberalism in NH. It’s only a matter of time before this whole crazy fucking scene turns violent. And rather than appeal to cooler heads, right wing radio fans the flames and fantasies of conspiracy-minded jackasses such as the fuckheads who bring along their weapons as company. My guess, if you were ask one of them to define socialism a -

This shit has gotten so crazy that it simply defies description. The President's Evil message to the childrens, from the Washington Monthly: THE STAY-IN-SCHOOL MESSAGE.... There was a major-league freak-out yesterday when right-wing activists learned that President Obama was prepared to challenge America's students to "work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning." It's a message the White House would broadcast live to schools that choose to air it. It caused Jim Greer, the chairman of the Republican Party of Florida, to have something of a breakdown. H -
As of this morning, Variety was the only publication to give The Road a poor review. Esquire Magazine ran a story based on an earlier cut, and gave it a rave review. The trailer had me a bit worried, but now that I’ve had the opportunity to watch a few scenes, my mind has been set at ease - for the most part.
