  1. To Cowboy Poet's point - the Hawks are an Original 6 team, just like the Leafs. And Harold Ballard was as bad (or worse) than Bill Wirtz. I agree that it's even more dispicable to see these things in an O6 town...but you have to make an allowance for that; these cities have deep hockey roots, and the game will prevail, eventually. Leafs last won the Cup in '67, Hawks in '61. It'd be good for hockey if the Hawks won it this year.

  2. Great game last night, Hawks really dominated the 2nd and 3rd periods and fought so hard to finally get something past Luongo. I'm torn, I like both teams in this series - the Hawks are my favorite team after the Habs (I grew up in Montreal). But I know the Canucks are the best hope for a Canadian team going to the finals. And they're a fun team to watch when they're "on" their game. Guess I'll be happy no matter the outcome.

  3. Habs.....unbelievable. I grew up on them and rolled out of bed every morning expecting them to win the Cup, but that was a long time ago. I mean the 70s and five Cups. Now Halak getting so hot reminds me of Roy in '86.

Pittsburgh and Detroit are both beatable, hopefully they'll both get knocked out ASAP.

Chicago-Vancouver should be a good series. I'd LOVE to see a Montreal-Chicago final, they're the only teams I've ever really liked. Not totally true...the Islanders won me over for a while there. Again, ancient history.

  4. Was just listening to Ron Woods's Anthology - The Seven Days from Dylan's 30th is on it, fantastic version with the Booker and the MG's. I haven't watched the 30th Anv. is a long time. I do remember the PBS station in Carbondale played it a lot, which I was grateful for.

If you like Seven Days, check out Joe Cocker's version sometime. (from the album Sheffield Steel)

  5. I'd like to see Montreal and/or Chicago in the final, but I know that ain't happening. They're the only teams I really care about. Short of that I'd love to see Washington and Detroit get knocked out early.

Some pretty ferocious hits in game 2's, especially by the Pens and Caps. (from what I saw) Not very surprising, it's such a physical game - but checking to injure players seems like the rule nowadays. The fans want blood, so that's what the league allows/gives 'em. :(

  6. There used to be a great live version on youtube, I think maybe from a Chicago show 3-4 years ago? But it was pulled and hasn't been there for a while now. Tweedy was very unshaved, and he did a much longer than usual amazing guitar intro. That was my favorite...sorry for the lack of details but I'd bet you can find this (audio) on a torrent, or maybe someone here will know.

  7. I'm sure I'm in the minority, but the only album that's really grabbed me is Another Fine Day. I've heard Down By and Blood and neither did much for me. AFD has a ton of good songs and ironically not much of Jeff's input, he was too busy that year I think. But it's a great record.

was a bit surprised to see no mention of any of the 33 1/3rd books out on Continuum...there are a lot of titles, each one ostensibly focused on a single record, and typically written by either a musician or rock critic. i've only read a few, but they were all good, esp the Celine Dion and Black Sabbath ones. i've also read the Byrds and Smiths titles, and have the GBV one on deck.

you can get 'em really cheap used, and i will definitely be picking up some more.

I read the Music From Big Pink 33 1/3 novella, it was pretty entertaining.

  9. First post - Hi everyone!

My wife and I will be driving to the festival from Grand Rapids, MI on Thursday Aug 12. If anyone else is driving from Michigan that day, let me know. It might be fun to caravan and share some meals along the way.

On a Thursday you may want to cut through southern Ontario and avoid the snarls in Cleveland. If you do, take the border at Niagara Falls (Rainbow Bridge)-- it's generally faster than the Lewiston and Buffalo crossings.

    :cheers
