  1. I didn't read the whole thing either. I noticed that the analysis only looked at popular albums from groups that were formed between 1970 and 1979 (American groups only I think). So... Doobie Bros, Steely Dan, America, Bread, Talking Heads, Eagles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Aerosmith, CSN/Y, and what not. I wonder if Big Star made the radar. Or Little Feat. Or The Ramones. The factors would be a lot more interesting with some actual data!:dontgetit

  2. When you say "very easily driven by an iPod" does that mean there is more work involved than just plugging it in and hitting play?

I'm really interested in a nice set of headphones and was about to spend $600 on a pair until I saw this post.

Since you went ahead and bought them.....I'm sure they'll be a big improvement, so enjoy them and feel free to ignore the following.

Most of the large, high-end headphones are designed to be driven by a separate outboard amplifier. There are many hundreds of great amps out there, and some of them are portable (kinda), but for the hardcore headphiles the amp is as important as the headphone- and the synergy between the two is paramount. The reason a small mp3 player isn't great for most of these headphones is that it only puts out a few milliwatts of power (for battery life), so your earbuds or headphones need to be well placed in your ear, have very sensitive drivers (speakers), and have a friendly impedance load - or all of the above. If two of those three needs aren't met by the headphone, then the iPod's tiny amp will be taxed and will perform badly--> sonic degradation. May also affect battery life. That's just a very simple summary, as I understand it. There are a few exceptions- some of the Audio-Technica models, and a few others, are dual-purpose and can work very well with just an iPod. (but still a bit overkill if that's your only music source)

  3. Nice call out to Damien Jurado and Josh Ritter.

I also never bought into the Radiohead hype. The Bends is amazing no matter how you slice it. Everything else is sort of lost on me FWIW. I know for me it is the lacking melody. Thom Yorke whining above music tends to become tedious.

I sort of agree with that, but... In Rainbows is just beautiful, and most of it is quite melodic. It's the most accessible thing they've done in a long time, and overall their best record in many ways. (to me) On In Rainbows Thom takes misery to a level of beauty I've rarely heard on disc.

  4. Head-Fi is a great site if you obsess about this stuff.

I miss my Japanese woodie AT's. Great sound under $400 (used) and could easily be driven off an iPod output if you wanted them mobile. Sweet midrange, not excessive bass. (kinda big tho)

  5. Can't believe I forgot Rickie.

Would've expected more love for Laurie, Lu and Tracy.

Also very deserving.... Lauren Hill, Maya (MIA), Sade, Dido, Martha Wainwright, Sophie B. Hawkins, Cindi Lauper, Madonna, Tina Turner, Loreena McKennitt, Diana Krall, Laura Nyro, Joan Baez. Many others I enjoy but they have been and will be mentioned a lot.

  6. Assuming you want female pop-rock-folk band leaders, or singer-songwriters. Offhand some of my faves......

    Joni Mitchell

    Kate Bush

    Laurie Anderson

    Chrissie Hynde

    Sinead O'Connor (ret.)

    Tracy Chapman

    Lucinda Williams

    Leslie Feist

    Cat Power

    Neko Case

    Gwen Stefani

    guess that makes 11...

  7. I actually believe they could make another album and the whole 9 yards. I mean if they came out ripping those songs from their old setlists I would seriously be in fucking heaven. I would do every single show possible and pay 1000 dollars per show. I cant imagine anything better in this world. I could have seen them tons of times back in the day and never did. I regret it so much. Those songs are still there and they are both still there. I think they owe it to their fans to play them. Not shelve them for all time. If they both werent able or werent around that would be one thing but they are. They shouldnt shelve that music live forever. They dont do that to each of their music from the end of Tupelo on so why deny us that??

Oh man. Sorry but I don't think they "owe" us shit. In fact their record company never paid them what they were due. (right??)

I don't think this'll ever happen. At most Wilco might someday bring Jay onstage and do a couple of numbers. That would be a treat, I guess. But really, who cares.

  8. if you didn't notice, i started this thread and put mmj at #2 on my list. i believe someone else mentioned mmj in their list as well. my forum name is also "dondante". haha.

Duh, I thought so. I double checked before I posted that and still didn't see it. It's been a long week.......

(but I still get the kickback for converting Cortez...haha)

  9. A lot of people think I'd like MMJ. However, I have a really hard time with them. I'll check out the track you mention.

I have a hard time with plenty of their stuff too. But what they do well, they do really, really well. They're so tight on Okonokos...a lot of the jam-boogie stuff on that double disc ranks right up there with Waiting For Columbus, for me.
